    It's been a rainy last week or so but we have managed some nice catches on our 3 boats.

    Summer has officially started in Port O’ Connor. There are 3 major bay systems in Port O’Connor, west matagorda bay, Espiritu Bay, and San Antonio Bay. Each one has its own characteristics and each present a challenge on finding good fish. Espiritu Bay has been producing solid trout on top water baits in the early morning and plastics such as down south lures. The trout have moved from the mud from the back lakes and sloughs to the sand of the south shore lines and sand bars, as the day gets warmer they move from the flats to the deeper guts and then back to the flats as the evening arrives and the bait moves back onto the flats. The redfish have also been producing very well this summer and can be caught on top water and plastics as well. West matagorda bay has been on fire as of late and the trout have been in an abundance on the sandbars and flats. The bull reds have been epic this year in deeper waters from bird island all the way into the jetties early in the morning and have been caught on jigs. San Antonio Bay has been a little slower on producing fish but they are starting to turn on too. Each bay has oyster reefs, sand, and grass pockets which all present a different challenge on how to fish and be successful on getting a limit of trout and reds. As the we get into July and august the fish are going to move into deeper water to stay cool so we always have to be aware of water temperature and tidal movement. Also the months of July and august are great for going to the surf because we hardly get any wind in those months which keeps the surf calm and there are some big trout and reds that hang out on the gulf side of the barrier islands.

    The redfish bite is still steady. They are moving into the inlets to spawn as the mullet are coming in. Flounder bite is still good and the tarpon are on the beach. Target the pogy pods on or near the beach with live finger mullet. Also lady fish, blues and bonita mixed in.

    Fishing has been Fantasic targeting the trout bite in the mornings. Majority of my clients a taking trout limits home if not limits pretty close to it. Redfish has been hit or miss recently. Still to hot for them to come out into the clear water. We been catching flounder here and there while Fishing for trout as well.

    On the nearshore reefs there’s been a good flounder and Spanish bite. Which should continue into September. The flounder have been biting mullet, pogies, and baby croakers in the 3-7”range using a Carolina rig around the barges and APCs. the Spanish have been biting Spoons and mackerel trees either trolling the mackerel tree with a number one planer or casting gold or silver spoons. You can also chum with live mullet to get the Spanish fired up then live line a mullet on a number 4 treble with 3-4” of wire. Around the jetties there has been some trout redfish flounder and Spanish . Most of the trout have been caught on live shrimp floating down along the rocks anywhere from 5 to 10 foot down. You can catch some of the redfish using the slip corks with live shrimp or Just off the rocks and around the channel there’s been some bull redfish you can use cut bait (blue fish, pogies, mullet) or live pogies on a Carolina rig (2-3oz weight with 12”-16” 40lb fluorocarbon leader with a 8/0 circle hook. This bull redfish bite should only get better moving into September/October. The flounder have been tight to the rocks and hanging around any bottom structure. Fishing the outside of the jetties when the water is cleanest with a 1/4 ounce jig head with a finger mullet has been the best. If you start seeing an area with Spanish jumping and chasing mullet try anchoring in that area and start throwing live mullet around the boat once you start seeing the Spanish around the boat pitch a mullet on a number 4 treble with 2-3” of wire or any top water bait and they should hammer it!

    July fishing off the coast of fort Lauderdale had it’s ups and it’s downs butt all in all it was a good month for catching. We had a real hard time fishing due to all the sea weed in the ocean. This was one of the toughest months we have had in a long time trying to fish and trying our best to keep the seaweed off our baits. But at the end of the month looking back while yep the seaweed was a real pain the fishing was actually pretty good. The tunas were biting well all month along with a few Wahoo’s. One new thing we tried just to get around the sea weed was anchoring up in front of a ship wreck and WOW it paid off for us with some great bottom fishing along with a couple of sailfish. Also found a Cuban raft floating! Coast Guard had marked it so they must have gotten everyone off? So the sea weed actually helped and made us think out side of the box and went back to basics and fished like we did way back when.

    Well the trout fishing has been on fire with limits in the mornings being caught fairly early. Red fish has been a little spotty but the black drum have been good in the afternoons in South Bay. We've also been hitting flounder on the sand bars on shrimp and some artificial. Fishing is going to get better and better as we transition into the fall months from September through November.

    Fishing has continued to remain consistent. Trout have been great early along deeper grass lines and rock beds throwing croaker and shrimp. Reds are showing up in the flats in big schools and are getting ready to make their spawn run. Flounder have been on channel edges in big numbers. Drum have also been showing up around spoil islands. They have been easy to spot. Dead shrimp on a 1/16 to 1/8 ounce jig head has shown great results.

    Fishing has been spectacular! Flounder are being caught on the intracoastal. Slot reds being caught in dirty water on cut bait and artificials. The trout bite is on fire in the early morning and late evening on live shrimp and popping corks. Drums excellent on dead shrimp on out going tides.
