Fishing report from Jordan M. in Matagorda, Texas

Fishing has been good when the weather is right. Catching redfish drifting over the flats in East Matagorda Bay on live shrimp and lures first thing in the morning. And have been catching trout wading and drifting over reefs throwing croaker and lures as well.

Had my Oilmans group take 1st in the red fish division with a 8.4 pounds and 1st in the triple tail with 24.5 pounder My other groups have been catching steady on shrimp under a popping cork. But the big bites have been coming from wading throwing top waters in the morning and moving out to deeper water in the afternoons

Trout fishing has continued to be outstanding, free-lining live croaker in 3-4ft of water. Redfish and black drum are schooled up on the surface and can be very easily sight-casted with a live shrimp!

The bite has been good early and late. Summer time pattern so get out early or late afternoon just before dark. Coordinate with the tides. Outgoing early and incoming late is best for reds and trout. It's a new moon so the tides will be strong. We've been experiencing low low tides the last few weeks with a west to south west wind that's pushing the water out. Hit the creeks and flats early in the falling tide and you should do well on the reds, drum and flounder. Shrimp are still the bait of choice but the mullet run will kick off in the next few weeks so expect a shift in baits. Black drum, flounder and trout can be found in deep corners along the creek bends with a strong current on jigheads or circle hooks with a small splitshot .

Trout bite remains solid early in the morning. They have been holding right off grass beds and rock ledges. Croaker has still been great for trout. Reds have been up in the flats and tight on spoil islands. Flounder have been good on areas with big sand pockets.
