Winter fishing has been fun as we have bottom-fishing on most of our offshore trips. The main catch has been catch-and-release gag groupers, hogfish, mangrove snappers, lane snappers, porgies, and grunts on all of our length trips. These species make for lots of excellent white fish for our captains’ to fillet back at the dock and send home with our customers! We will continue to target these fish until the water warms up and the trolling bite gets hot! Busy spring break in Clearwater Beach is coming, time to book your March and April charters now!
The bites been a little tough between cold fronts. Having to work a little harder and cover a little more ground throughout the day to fine fish. The month of February will definitely be better as the water is warming up the sheep head are starting to bite the trout are starting to spawn and red fish are starting to stage up on outer islands.

After the record Christmas cold front the water here dropped over 10 degrees in a couple of days. But, the Red Tide dissipated and left cleaner water. The local reefs(and hard bottom areas withing a couple miles) have been best. Lots of Key West Grunts, along with a steady sheepshead bite and occasional Redfish, Flounder and other stuff. The Sheepshead bite should only get better and the Flounder normally start going off as well. Should be a decent start to 2023 in terms of nearshore fishing over here out of Madeira Beach.

Gag Grouper
The report in the last couple weeks is about the same. Once all the fish get in their winter time pattern it normally lasts until about March depending on the weather.
Vermilion snapper bite is still strong. Triggers still in season until 31st December. Catching some Almaco jacks, and of course red snapper are everywhere. We are still running charters until we dry dock for a week or two in January. 6 and 8 hr trips are producing catches of keeper fish. Although the 4 and 5 hr trips are producing lots of fun fish to catch, not as many keepers.

Flounder, Gag Grouper
The flounder bite has picked up on the offshore wrecks along with a good amount of sheepshead on the bridge pilings. Still a few red fish hanging around the grass flats

Gulf fishing:
Gag grouper will close at the end of the month.
Nice to get one in before then because as I've heard they will most likely not open back up next year or at least in April of next spring.
Flounders are unfolding into fish boxes, but plenty around still.
Scamp grouper and smaller tasty bottom fish still bitting and will be.
Bay:
Redfish, trout, some Spanish still lurking, big giant 40 lb black drum for fun fight, and pompano being the highlight.

Water is cooling down and the fishing is heating up. Trout bite has been great on the creek mouths. Look for the spotty bottom with kelp grass for you best results. A lot of slot size redfish and over slot are on the outer islands and also in the creek mouths Feeding on mud minnows and shrimp. Incoming tide has the best bite. Gag grouper are stacked up on the rocks in 5ft to 12ft of water.
