What is vermillion snapper in Marathon all about?

Vermillion snapper, also known as beeliner or mingo snapper, are a popular catch among anglers in Marathon. These vibrant red fish inhabit the reefs and wrecks found offshore in the waters of the Florida Keys. Vermillion snapper are prized for their delicious, mild-flavored flesh, making them a sought-after target for both recreational and commercial fishermen. Their abundance and relatively shallow habitat make them accessible to anglers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned pros.

In Marathon, vermillion snapper can be caught year-round, although they are most abundant during the warmer months when they are more active and widespread along the reefs and wrecks. However, they can be found in shallower waters close to shore during the cooler months as well. These fish are known to congregate around underwater ledges, rock piles, and artificial reefs, where they feed on small fish, crustaceans, and squid.

When targeting vermillion snapper in Marathon, anglers often use light to medium tackle and bait such as squid, cut bait, or small live fish. What techniques are popular for catching vermillion snapper in Marathon?

In Marathon, Florida, mastering the art of vermillion snapper fishing requires a combination of skill, patience, and local knowledge. Anglers employ various techniques to target these prized fish, often depending on factors such as water depth, current conditions, and the preferred habitat of the snappers. One popular method is bottom fishing using live or cut bait, such as squid, shrimp, or small fish, which is effective in enticing vermillion snappers lurking around the reefs and wrecks that abound in Marathon's waters.

Another effective technique for vermillion snapper fishing in Marathon is vertical jigging. This method involves dropping specialized jigs or weighted lures to the seafloor and then rapidly jigging them up and down to mimic the movements of prey. Anglers must carefully gauge the depth and adjust their jigging rhythm to entice strikes from these wary fish.

In addition to traditional bait and jigging techniques, some anglers in Marathon have found success using artificial lures designed to mimic the appearance and movements of vermillion snapper prey. These lures, such as soft plastic swimbaits or metal jigs, can be cast and retrieved or jigged vertically, depending on the fishing conditions. This was honestly one of the most disappointing charters I’ve had. I’ve booked numerous charters all over and in the keys. I realize fishing is fishing but we were greeted by a captain other than Dan, great guy but not what I expected honestly. Our vessel wasn’t prepared and ready to go so we waited longer than was expected and it pushed other plans back even further. We caught one 12.5 inch yellow that was big enough to keep. On other charters the boat is quite well prepared and ready to change course quickly to get you on the fish, not the case, granted it was a shorter booking I’ve still had much better equipped captains and vessels. So to spend the day bobbing for non existent apples was not at all ideal. It was so boring my wife and son chose to nap. So just be aware that if you choose this charter it may not go at all to plan. Sadly it was a waste of precious vacation time. I typically hate reading negative reviews and have never personally left one, but this seemed appropriate given the outcome. Good luck.

Sharing my birthday with my dad meant I developed a love of fishing from him at an early age. We celebrated my 59th and his 82nd birthday with 2 back-to-back fishing days with Captain Jack on the Jesse James. He was a careful listener to our requests and expertly guided us to fun fishing, filled with pro tips and great hospitality. Captain Jack truly wants you to have the best time possible and goes all the extra miles. So grateful we were able to fish with him and can't wait to do it again in the future!

Captain Dan and Ryan were fantastic. The ocean was pretty rough that day but they helped us have a great time and pull in quite a few fish. We’ll be back again next year and will definitely look to hire them again!
