Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is nearshore fishing in Panama City Beach all about?

Nearshore fishing in Panama City Beach, Florida, offers anglers an exciting opportunity to explore the productive waters of the Gulf of Mexico while staying relatively close to shore. Situated along Florida's Emerald Coast, Panama City Beach boasts a diverse marine ecosystem that supports a wide variety of fish species year-round. One of the highlights of nearshore fishing in Panama City Beach is the chance to target species like red snapper, grouper, king mackerel, and Spanish mackerel. These fish are often found near artificial reefs, wrecks, and natural structures, providing anglers with ample opportunities for both recreational and sport fishing.

One popular method for nearshore fishing in Panama City Beach is bottom fishing, which involves dropping baited hooks or jigs to the ocean floor to target bottom-dwelling species such as red snapper, grouper, and amberjack. Anglers use a variety of baits including squid, cut bait, or live baitfish, and often fish around artificial reefs, wrecks, and underwater structures where these species congregate. Bottom fishing requires patience and skill in reading underwater topography and currents to maximize catches.

Trolling is another effective technique for nearshore fishing in Panama City Beach, particularly when targeting pelagic species such as king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and mahi-mahi. Anglers troll by trailing lines with baited lures or rigged baits behind a moving boat at varying speeds and depths. This technique allows anglers to cover a larger area and locate schools of fish actively feeding near the surface or along current breaks. Trolling with shiny, fast-moving lures mimics the movements of baitfish and triggers strikes from these fast-swimming predators, providing an exhilarating and dynamic fishing experience along Florida's Gulf Coast.

On August 1st. My 15 year old son and I went out with Captain John John on a 3 hour shark trip. We caught 9 sharks and multiple other fish. We had a great time. Captain John John works hard and knows what he’s doing. He was very safety conscious and I would absolutely recommend him. Hopefully we will be able to catch up with him on our next trip.

We had a great time! Most of us had never been fishing offshore before, but we were all able to snag a few Red Snapper and Beeliner. We got our quota of Snapper in the 6 hours that we were out there. For future excursions, the one lesson I'd take away is to try to buy live bait in the morning if you have an afternoon trip. We didn't have any live bait to fish with, but still had a great time and plenty of success!
