Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. In Panama City, Florida, Spanish mackerel are a popular and abundant species among anglers, known for their aggressive strikes and high-speed runs. These sleek and streamlined fish can be found in the nearshore and offshore waters of Panama City, particularly around reefs, channels, and baitfish schools. Spanish mackerel are easily recognizable by their blue-green back, silver sides, and distinctive yellow spots along the lateral line. Anglers often target Spanish mackerel for their thrilling fishing action and delicious taste.

Anglers in Panama City employ a variety of techniques to target Spanish mackerel, capitalizing on their feeding behavior and preferred habitats. One effective method is trolling with small spoons, plugs, or flashy lures at varying speeds to imitate fleeing baitfish. Anglers target areas with strong tidal currents, baitfish schools, or structure such as reefs and jetties, where Spanish mackerel are known to congregate in search of food. Trolling allows anglers to cover a larger area and locate actively feeding fish, providing exciting fishing action and opportunities for multiple hookups.

Additionally, casting or jigging with small metal jigs or spoons can be productive when targeting Spanish mackerel in Panama City's nearshore waters. Anglers often target these fish around baitfish schools, channels, and structure-rich areas, where Spanish mackerel are known to ambush prey. Retrieving lures with erratic movements resembling injured baitfish can trigger aggressive strikes from Spanish mackerel. Anglers must be prepared for the blistering runs and acrobatic leaps of these fast and powerful fish, providing an exhilarating fishing experience in the vibrant coastal waters of Panama City.

Captain Terry and his crew were great, the weather not so much 😄. The captain did such a great job keeping us out of the rain for long as possible. He did such a good job teaching my son the rod and all the workings, and telling us the species of the few fish we caught. If we come back to PCB, my son will for sure want a deep sea trip!

    Trip: Surf fishing

We were looking for a different kind of fishing trip and found it - we loved the surf fishing experience with Capt Max! He is a professional in every sense - he reached out to ensure we knew what to expect and where to meet. The beach location was easy to find & park and he had chairs & water waiting for us. Capt Max is very personable - loved hearing his story! The surf was very rough so we didn’t have high expectations, but Capt Max worked hard to find fish! We caught three nice pompano which he cleaned for us on the beach (they were delicious by the way!). Plus, we were treated to a beautiful sunset! What’s not to love?! No early morning, no bouncing around on a boat, spending time on the beach, great sunset, and a tasty dinner - perfect start to a beach vacay! Can’t wait to do it again and a big thank you to Capt Max!
