Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is inshore fishing in Punta Mita about?

Inshore fishing in Punta Mita, Mexico, offers anglers a thrilling opportunity to explore the rich waters of the Pacific Ocean along Mexico's western coast. Located on the northern tip of Banderas Bay, Punta Mita is renowned for its diverse marine ecosystem and abundance of game fish. One of the most sought-after species by anglers is the roosterfish, known for its distinctive appearance with elongated dorsal fins resembling a rooster's comb. These powerful fish are often found near rocky shorelines, reefs, and surf breaks, where they prey on smaller fish. Anglers target roosterfish using live bait like mullet or sardines, as well as artificial lures such as poppers and swimbaits, presenting them with long casts into the surf or along the edges of rocky structures.

Another prized catch in Punta Mita's inshore waters is the Pacific jack crevalle, locally known as "toro" due to its bull-like strength and aggressive feeding habits. Jack crevalle are voracious predators that inhabit both shallow and deeper waters, often found near river mouths, estuaries, and along sandy beaches. Anglers use a variety of techniques including casting live baitfish, jigging with metal spoons, or retrieving fast-moving lures to entice these powerful fish into striking. Jack crevalle provide thrilling fights and are highly regarded for their strength and resilience.

In addition to roosterfish and jack crevalle, Punta Mita offers opportunities to target other inshore species such as snapper, grouper, and various types of jacks and snook. The region's warm waters and diverse habitats ensure that anglers can enjoy productive fishing year-round, with each season bringing different opportunities and challenges. Whether casting from the shoreline, fishing from a boat, or exploring the nearby reefs and estuaries, Punta Mita provides a memorable inshore fishing experience amidst stunning coastal scenery and abundant marine life.

What are the most popular months to go inshore fishing in Punta Mita?

Inshore fishing seasons in Punta Mita, Mexico, showcase a variety of species and fishing opportunities that fluctuate with the changing seasons and ocean conditions. Winter months, from December to February, mark the peak season for catching Pacific sailfish and dorado (mahi-mahi) in the inshore waters. These prized game fish are often found near offshore reefs and submerged structures, where they feed voraciously on smaller fish and squid. Anglers typically target sailfish and dorado using trolling techniques with live bait, such as mullet or squid, as well as artificial lures like diving plugs and skirted trolling lures.

Springtime in Punta Mita brings warmer waters and the onset of the yellowfin tuna season. These powerful and fast-swimming fish migrate closer to shore, following schools of baitfish and squid. Anglers often encounter yellowfin tuna while trolling offshore, but they can also be targeted in deeper inshore waters using live bait like mackerel or by casting poppers and jigs. Spring is also an excellent time for inshore species like roosterfish and jack crevalle, which become more active along rocky shorelines, surf breaks, and near river mouths.

Summer in Punta Mita sees the arrival of pelagic species such as marlin and wahoo, which migrate through the region's offshore waters. While these species are typically targeted further offshore, their presence can influence inshore fishing as well, with anglers occasionally encountering them while targeting other species closer to shore. Inshore fishing during summer remains productive for roosterfish, jack crevalle, and various snapper and grouper species, providing anglers with a wide range of opportunities to explore and enjoy the abundant marine life that thrives in Punta Mita's coastal waters throughout the year.

This method is especially productive for targeting pelagic species like sailfish, dorado, and tuna that migrate through the offshore and nearshore waters. Anglers troll a variety of lures such as diving plugs, skirted trolling lures, and feathered jigs at different depths to mimic the movement of baitfish and attract predatory fish. Trolling allows anglers to cover a large area of water and locate schools of fish actively feeding or cruising the surface.

Fly fishing has also gained popularity among inshore anglers in Punta Mita, offering a challenging and rewarding experience in the shallow flats and nearshore reefs. Fly fishermen target species like roosterfish and jack crevalle using specialized flies that imitate baitfish, shrimp, or crabs. This technique requires precise casting skills and an understanding of fish behavior to present the fly effectively to cruising or feeding fish. Sight fishing is common, where anglers spot fish in clear water and cast their flies to entice strikes. Ariel and Alexis were amazing captains. Ariel is completely bilingual and has so much experience fishing for 17 years in PV but also all over the world. He was super adaptive — he worked with us to do a lot of different types of fishing (we trolled, we jigged) and all in we caught almost 40 fish with just two of us!! He also gave us an opportunity to add on a trip to Yelapa where they cooked our fresh fish, and it was not only delicious but such a unique experience. Ariel was super communicative and flexible, too. Would highly highly recommend Ariel to anyone who wants to catch a lot of fish, learn about the area and have an amazing time out on the water.
