Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

What is inshore fishing in Dry Tortugas all about?

Inshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas offers a unique and rewarding experience due to the area's remote location and pristine waters. The shallow waters and mangroves around the islands create an ideal habitat for a variety of species. Anglers often target species such as tarpon, bonefish, and permit in these inshore areas. The crystal-clear waters provide excellent visibility, making it easier to spot fish and tailor your fishing techniques accordingly.

One popular technique for inshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas is fly fishing, particularly for species like bonefish and permit. The shallow flats and clear waters allow for sight fishing, where anglers can see the fish and present their flies in a way that mimics the natural prey. Using lightweight rods and delicate presentations is key to successfully catching these wary fish. Fly fishing in the Dry Tortugas offers a challenging and gratifying experience for those who enjoy the finesse of this technique.

Another effective method is using light tackle with live bait, such as shrimp or small crabs, which can attract tarpon and other inshore species. This approach is particularly effective around the mangroves and coral reefs, where these fish seek shelter and food. Casting live bait near the structures and allowing it to drift naturally can provoke strikes from these powerful fish. Overall, inshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas provides diverse opportunities and stunning surroundings, making it a memorable destination for anglers.

What are the most popular months to go inshore fishing in Dry Tortugas?

Inshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas is influenced by the seasonal changes that affect the behavior and abundance of various fish species. During the spring months, the warming waters bring an increase in activity among inshore species like bonefish and permit. This time of year is ideal for targeting these species as they become more active and move into the shallow flats and mangroves. The pleasant weather and generally clear waters make spring a prime season for inshore fishing in this remote location.

As summer progresses, the inshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas remains productive, with tarpon becoming a primary target. The summer months see large schools of tarpon migrating through the area, making it an excellent time to use live bait or large flies to attract these powerful fish. The warm temperatures and longer daylight hours also provide ample opportunities for extended fishing trips. However, anglers should be prepared for occasional weather changes, as summer storms can impact fishing conditions.

In the fall, the fishing conditions in the Dry Tortugas continue to be favorable, though there is a shift in the types of species that are most active. As the waters begin to cool, bonefish and permit remain active around the flats, while tarpon may start to move away from the area. Fall is also a good time to target species like snook and redfish, which become more active as the water temperatures gradually drop. The quieter fishing conditions and the scenic backdrop of the Dry Tortugas make fall a rewarding time for inshore fishing, offering a serene experience in this unique environment.

What techniques are popular for inshore fishing in Dry Tortugas?

Inshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas offers a variety of techniques suited to the area's unique marine environment. One popular method is fly fishing, especially for species like bonefish and permit. The clear, shallow flats around the islands provide excellent sight fishing opportunities, where anglers can spot fish and present flies that mimic natural prey. Using lightweight rods and delicate presentations is key to enticing these wary fish. The challenge and precision of fly fishing in such pristine waters make it a favored technique among anglers.

Another effective technique for inshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas is using light tackle with live bait. Species such as tarpon and snook are commonly targeted with live shrimp or small crabs, which are cast near mangroves or coral reefs. This method takes advantage of the natural movements and scent of live bait, increasing the chances of attracting these powerful fish. Light tackle allows for a more sensitive feel and better control, making it easier to handle the vigorous fights of inshore species.

For those looking to use artificial lures, soft plastics and jigs can be particularly effective. Lures that mimic the movement of small baitfish or crustaceans can attract species like bonefish and redfish. Techniques such as slow, steady retrieves or bouncing jigs off the bottom can mimic the natural actions of prey and provoke strikes. The versatility of artificial lures allows anglers to experiment with different colors and patterns to match the local conditions and target specific species. Overall, the diverse techniques available for inshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas offer exciting and productive fishing experiences.

Their keen senses and quick movements make them a rewarding species for those who enjoy a bit of finesse in their fishing.

Permit are another sought-after species in the inshore waters of the Dry Tortugas. Known for their impressive size and powerful runs, permit can be found around the same flats and mangroves where bonefish are located. They are often targeted using similar techniques, including fly fishing with crab or shrimp patterns, or using live bait. The chance to catch a permit adds an extra layer of excitement to inshore fishing adventures.

We had an absolutely amazing time deep sea fishing with Captain Anthony! He is a fun and knowledgeable fisherman with LOTS of experience and great stories (ask him about how he’d dive for lobsters to impress his dates). He does all the work but lets you learn and participate as much or as little as you want. We knew we had an expert when we heard the radio chatter of all the other guides complaining that nothing was biting, while we pulled in six (only four mahi in pic). The other two were a small tuna and a ~32” barracuda). We highly recommend Kilo Whiskey Charter & Captain Anthony!

Our guide Nick is top notch, he is friendly, knowledgeable and certainly knows great spots to fish. We caught fish all day, brought home three very large mutton’s, some other mutton’s and good size yellow tail. We caught and released fish all day, hogfish, large groupers and other assorted fishes. Thanks Nick .
