Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant all about?

Jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, provides anglers with a picturesque and productive environment along the Atlantic coastline. Situated at the convergence of Charleston Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean, the jetties here offer a variety of fishing opportunities year-round. Anglers can target a diverse range of species, including sheepshead, black drum, redfish, and flounder, all of which are drawn to the structure and abundant food sources around the jetties.

One popular technique for jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant is bottom fishing using live or cut bait such as shrimp, squid, or mullet. Anglers often employ Carolina rigs or simple bottom rigs with weights to keep the bait near the seabed, where these bottom-dwelling species are found. This method requires patience and attentiveness to bites, as these fish can be cautious and require a subtle approach to hook successfully.

Another effective approach is casting artificial lures to mimic the movements of baitfish or crustaceans. Anglers use a variety of lures, such as soft plastics, jigs, and spoons, to attract predatory fish like speckled trout and redfish that frequent the area around the jetties. Varying retrieval speeds and patterns can be crucial in enticing strikes from these opportunistic feeders. Whether casting from the rocks or fishing from a boat nearby, jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant offers both recreational anglers and seasoned fishermen alike a chance to enjoy the thrill of the catch amidst the scenic beauty of the Lowcountry's coastal landscapes.

What are the most popular months to go jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant?

Jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, experiences distinct seasons that influence the abundance and behavior of various fish species. Spring marks the beginning of the fishing season, characterized by warming waters and increased activity among marine life. Anglers target species like sheepshead and black drum, which are commonly found around the jetties, as they feed on crustaceans and small fish. Spring mornings and evenings are particularly productive times for fishing, offering calm conditions and opportunities to hook these prized catches before the summer crowds arrive.

Summer in Mount Pleasant brings warmer temperatures and bustling fishing opportunities near the jetties. Early mornings or late afternoons remain ideal for fishing as anglers seek species like redfish and flounder that thrive in the coastal waters. Using live bait such as shrimp or mullet or casting artificial lures like soft plastics and spoons, anglers can effectively target these fish around the structure of the jetties. The summer months also offer the chance to land larger catches as predatory fish become more active in pursuit of prey.

Fall marks a transition period for jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant, signaling the return of cooler temperatures and seasonal migrations of fish. As baitfish move closer to shore, larger predators like speckled trout and bull redfish become more prevalent around the jetties. Anglers adapt their techniques accordingly, using a mix of live and artificial baits to entice strikes from these prized game fish. Fall fishing in Mount Pleasant is highly anticipated for its combination of comfortable weather and excellent fishing conditions, making it a favorite season for both locals and visitors seeking memorable angling experiences along South Carolina's coast.

What techniques are popular for jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant?

Jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, offers anglers a variety of techniques to target different species thriving in the coastal waters. One effective method is bottom fishing using live or cut bait such as shrimp, squid, or mullet. Anglers typically use Carolina rigs or simple bottom rigs with weights to keep the bait near the seabed, where bottom-dwelling species like sheepshead, black drum, and flounder are often found. This approach requires patience and attentiveness to bites, as these fish can be cautious and require a subtle approach to hook successfully.

Another popular technique is casting artificial lures to mimic the movements of baitfish or crustaceans. Anglers vary the retrieval speed and pattern to entice strikes from these opportunistic feeders, making this method both exciting and skill-intensive.

Jigging near the jetty structures is also effective, especially for targeting species like speckled trout and flounder. Vertical jigging with bucktail jigs or soft plastic jigs allows anglers to present their bait at different depths, enticing fish positioned along the jetty walls or in deeper channels. This technique requires finesse in detecting subtle strikes and adjusting the jigging action accordingly. Whether fishing from the rocks or a nearby boat, mastering these diverse techniques enhances the enjoyment of jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant, offering anglers the chance to engage with the abundant marine life and enjoy the scenic beauty of South Carolina's Lowcountry.

What species are popular for jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant?

Jetty fishing in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, offers anglers a diverse range of species to target throughout the year. One of the primary catches anglers seek is the redfish, known for its strength and spirited fight. Redfish frequent the waters around the jetties, particularly near submerged structures and rocky outcrops where they feed on crabs, shrimp, and small fish. Anglers often use live bait such as mullet or shrimp, or they cast artificial lures like spoons and soft plastics to entice strikes from these powerful fish.

Speckled trout are another prized species found near the jetties of Mount Pleasant. These fish are known for their distinctive spotted patterns and excellent table fare. Speckled trout tend to gather in shallow, grassy areas or around oyster beds, where they hunt for baitfish. Anglers typically use live shrimp, mullets, or artificial lures such as topwater plugs and soft plastics to target these aggressive feeders. Early mornings and evenings are prime times for speckled trout fishing, when they are most active and feeding near the surface.

Flounder are also abundant around the jetties of Mount Pleasant, favoring sandy or muddy bottoms where they ambush passing prey. Anglers often target flounder using live minnows, mud minnows, or small mullets on bottom rigs or jig heads. Casting artificial lures like soft plastic or small jigs along the sandy patches near the jetty walls can also yield success. Flounder provide a rewarding challenge due to their subtle bites and flat shape, making them a favorite catch for anglers looking to test their skills in the rich waters of South Carolina's coast.

10/10 if we could put him up there , went out for a bachelor party and had a great time with Carlo. We had to cut the day short for some people and take them back to the dock but Carlo offer to take the rest of us back out for a couple more hours after. Definitely be using him every time we go out, not to mention we caught some of the biggest drum and sheep head inshore we’ve seen.

Captain Tim was great all through, from early communication/coordination to execution of our 4 hour charter for 4 guys. He showed us how he netted baitfish, then we set up on bull redfish. We were into them quickly and everyone in our party boated fish. Then we relocated because we wanted to try for shark and once again we got on them quickly, and again we all boated fish. Bargain plan, one good size ray was also caught. Highly recommend you try booking Captain Tim.

Perfect. Great weather and Brent took advantage of it. Took us to multiple spots to try to find the fish until he found one that was successful. Brent worked very well with our kids...11 and 13 year old boys. He was good at teaching them tips and was eager and fun when action was happening!! He fit right in with our family and was a great guide and leader! The boat rides were fun and he went out of his way to show my son's the jellyball and anything else outside of standard fishing that came up. Loved it!!
