Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is fishing in Liverpool all about?

There’s a kind of magic that happens when you drop a line into the waters around Liverpool, Texas. Tucked away in the heart of East Texas, this place isn’t just another fishing spot—it's a gateway to quiet mornings spent chasing the perfect catch. The rolling waters of the Brazos River seem to hum with life, teeming with bass, catfish, and the occasional giant gar, just waiting for someone to show up with a rod and a little patience. The air’s thick with the scent of cedar and pine, and the only sounds you’ll hear are the quiet splash of a lure hitting the water and the soft rustling of leaves in the wind.

What sets fishing in Liverpool apart isn’t just the variety of fish, it’s the peace. No rushing crowds, no noisy boats—just you, the river, and the slow roll of the day. It’s an experience that goes beyond fishing; it’s about tapping into something older, something quieter. As the sun rises and the mist lifts off the water, you can almost feel like you're the first person to cast a line in these waters, part of the same tradition that’s been going on for centuries. And with the Brazos River winding through these parts like a lifeline, it’s easy to see why this spot’s so beloved by locals and anyone who’s taken the time to learn its rhythm.

Whether you're a seasoned angler or a first-timer looking to get a taste of Texas fishing, Liverpool offers something for everyone. The nearby parks, the backroads, and the cozy, small-town vibe mean you can fish all day and then grab a bite at a local diner to swap stories with the folks who know the area best. It’s the kind of place where, even if you don’t land a monster catch, you still come away with something worthwhile—a slower pace, a deeper connection to the land, and a reminder that the best days on the water are the ones where you forget about time altogether.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Liverpool?

Fishing in Liverpool, Texas, is a year-round affair, but each season has its own flavor. When spring rolls around, the Brazos River wakes up from the winter chill, and the fish are hungry. This is prime time for bass and catfish, as the water warms and the current starts to pick up. Early mornings are best when the air is still cool and the river is glassy smooth, offering you a shot at those trophy fish before the heat of the day sets in. It’s a time when the river feels like it belongs to you, and you can almost hear the hum of life stirring beneath the surface.

Summer, though, is when Liverpool truly comes alive. The long, sun-drenched days bring out the best in the fishing and the river itself, as the water heats up and fish move into deeper pockets. Early mornings or late afternoons are when you want to hit the water, avoiding the midday heat but still finding the action. Catfish and gar are particularly active, and the challenge of landing a big one adds a rush that makes the hot days worthwhile. The pace of life slows down in the summer—there’s time for a long stretch of quiet on the water, with the occasional chatter of local fishermen passing the time under the shade of a nearby cypress tree.

Then, when fall hits, the river transforms once again. The cooler air and shifting light change the way the fish behave, and you’ll notice the bass coming closer to the shallows. The crispness in the air means you can fish later into the day without the sweltering heat, giving you a longer window to reel in that perfect catch. There’s a certain magic to fishing as the leaves change and the skies clear, the kind of days where the river feels almost timeless. Whether you're casting for your personal best or just soaking in the beauty of the changing seasons, the fall in Liverpool is something you won’t soon forget.

What types of fishing are popular in Liverpool?

Fishing in Liverpool, Texas isn’t just about casting a line and hoping for the best—it’s about understanding the river, its rhythms, and knowing how to work the water to your advantage. The Brazos River offers a little something for every type of angler. If you're looking for a classic challenge, bass fishing here is a true test of skill. Whether you're using crankbaits, jigs, or soft plastics, working the river's shallow flats and deeper pockets is a way to truly connect with the landscape. Patience is key, and if you hit the right spot, you’ll be rewarded with a fight that’ll make you feel like you’ve earned every ounce of the catch.

For those who prefer a more hands-on, down-and-dirty experience, catfishing in Liverpool is where the adventure kicks up a notch. Catfish are plentiful in these waters, and they’re not picky about bait. Whether it’s chicken liver, cut bait, or nightcrawlers, there’s something satisfying about sinking a line into the murky river and waiting for that sharp tug. Drift fishing is a favorite technique here, letting your bait slowly work its way through the river’s current, or if you’re feeling a bit more bold, try bottom fishing near submerged structure. The catfish are patient, but they’ll put up a fight once they’re hooked—especially the big ones that lurk in the deeper pools.

And then there’s the allure of gar fishing, a practice that brings both thrill and a sense of adventure to the waters of Liverpool. With their prehistoric look and fierce nature, gar are a unique species to chase, and they demand a different approach. Using heavy-duty tackle and specialized rigs, fishing for gar is an exercise in persistence and precision. Many anglers go after them with bowfishing gear, stalking the water’s edge and waiting for the perfect moment to take aim. It’s a challenge that not many rivers can offer, and it’s one that makes Liverpool stand out as a fishing destination with an edge.

What species are popular for fishing in Liverpool?

When you cast your line into the waters of Liverpool, Texas, you’re stepping into a haven for some of the most exciting and diverse fishing species in the state. The Brazos River is home to a wide range of fish, but it’s the bass that steals the show for many anglers. Both largemouth and smallmouth bass thrive here, offering a chance to test your skills in chasing down one of the most sought-after freshwater species. You’ll find them lurking near submerged structures, rocky outcrops, and in the river’s deeper pockets. When they bite, it’s not just about the catch—it’s the fight, the adrenaline rush, and the satisfaction of bringing in a trophy bass.

But don’t stop there—catfish are another major draw in the Brazos. With their abundance and appetite, they’re the go-to target for anyone looking for a more laid-back yet rewarding experience. Whether you’re after the sleek blue catfish or the hearty channel catfish, the river’s calm, deeper waters are their home. If you're after a true river legend, the flathead catfish also roams these waters, offering up a challenge that’ll test both your patience and your fishing techniques. The catfish in Liverpool are fighters, and they’re worth every minute spent waiting for the tug on your line.

If you're looking for something a bit different, gar fishing is an adventure all its own. These ancient creatures, with their long snouts and armored bodies, are as tough as they come. They’re not as common as bass or catfish, but when you hook one, it’s a battle like no other. The Brazos is home to both alligator gar and longnose gar, and both are formidable opponents. The sight of a giant gar breaking the surface is enough to get any angler’s heart racing, and landing one is a prize that you won’t forget. Whether you’re casting with traditional gear or trying your hand at bowfishing, gar add a whole new dimension to fishing in Liverpool, making it a destination that’s anything but ordinary.

What are the best places to fish in Liverpool?

Fishing in Liverpool, Texas, feels like you’ve stepped into a hidden corner of the Lone Star State, where the waters are wide, the fish are plentiful, and the experience is as much about the setting as it is about the catch. The Brazos River, which winds its way through the heart of the town, is one of the best places to cast a line. The river is home to a wide range of species, from bass to catfish to gar, and it offers a mix of deep pools and shallow flats, making it perfect for both beginner and experienced anglers. Whether you’re fishing from the bank or wading into the current, the Brazos has the kind of unhurried vibe that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon something truly special.

If you’re looking to get off the beaten path and explore a more secluded fishing spot, the nearby Stephen F. Austin State Park is a local favorite. This quiet park offers access to some beautiful stretches of the Brazos, as well as several smaller creeks and ponds, where you can target everything from bass to crappie. It’s the perfect spot for a day trip—quiet, peaceful, and the kind of place where you can throw your line in and forget about time. The park’s mix of open fields and wooded areas creates a perfect backdrop for a day of fishing, giving you the chance to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of East Texas while you’re at it.

And let’s not forget about the local ponds and smaller lakes scattered around Liverpool. These hidden gems offer an easy way to spend a few hours chasing after catfish or bass, and because they’re often less crowded, you get the kind of solitude that makes fishing in Liverpool feel like you’ve got the whole place to yourself. Whether you’re looking for a quick afternoon escape or an all-day fishing adventure, these smaller spots are perfect for those who like to explore beyond the big river. With the mix of public parks, hidden lakes, and the expansive Brazos, Liverpool has no shortage of places to cast your line and make your next great catch.

Does Liverpool have good fishing?

If you’re the kind of angler who values the quiet of the open water, then Liverpool, Texas, is one of those hidden gems that needs to be on your radar. Nestled in East Texas, this small town is far from the tourist traps and crowds, which means the fishing here feels personal—just you, the Brazos River, and the peaceful solitude that comes with it. Whether you're after bass, catfish, or even the elusive gar, this area offers a unique blend of fishing opportunities that let you connect with the water in a way that's rare these days. The river’s gentle flow and variety of habitats—from the shallow flats to deeper pools—make it a versatile spot for anglers of all levels.

What makes Liverpool stand out is the diversity of fishing it offers. Bass fishing is a big draw, with both largemouth and smallmouth bass thriving in the Brazos River. If you prefer something with a bit more grit, the catfish population is abundant, with blue catfish and flatheads lurking in the deeper stretches, waiting for a chance to put up a fight. And for those anglers who want to step off the beaten path, gar fishing in these waters is a true adventure, with alligator gar and longnose gar offering a unique challenge for anyone willing to take it on. No matter your target species, Liverpool gives you the space and the conditions to make every trip worthwhile.

But what really sets Liverpool apart as a fishing destination is the atmosphere. It's not just about the fish—it’s about the experience. With a slower pace of life and wide-open spaces, you get the kind of fishing that’s almost like stepping back in time. No need to fight for a spot or wait for your turn; here, the river is yours to explore. Whether you're spending the day on the water or winding down in a local diner after your catch, Liverpool offers a refreshingly laid-back fishing experience that’s hard to find in the hustle of bigger cities. So yes, if you’re looking for fishing that feels authentic and unhurried, Liverpool is as good as it gets.

We caught some really big Reds, 2 of which we had to tag, lots of drum including the 2 trophies we had to catch and release of 32 & 40 inches. He will be our Captain of choice for future trips. Captain Cody took my son and me out on a Friday morning. We caught a variety of fish including redfish, sheephead, flounder, speckled trout, black drum, and golden grouper (see photos). My son and I are a couple of novices. Cody was super patient with us. He helped us bait hooks, get lines untangled, remove pesky hardheads, etc. without ever seeming frustrated with us. He cleaned our fish the way we wanted. He took the time to teach us several tricks for catching fish. Overall it was a great experience and we plan to use him again in the future.
