What techniques are most common offshore fishing in Virginia Beach?

Offshore fishing in Virginia Beach requires a mix of tried-and-true techniques to maximize your chances of a successful outing. Trolling stands out as one of the primary methods employed by anglers, especially when targeting pelagic species like tuna and mahi-mahi. Boats cruise at varying speeds, dragging lines with artificial lures or rigged baits to entice fish. The open waters off Virginia Beach, with their abundance of underwater structures and changing currents, make trolling an effective way to cover a lot of ground and locate actively feeding fish.

Bottom fishing is another popular technique employed off the coast of Virginia Beach, particularly when targeting species like tilefish, sea bass, and other bottom-dwelling fish. Anglers drop lines equipped with baited rigs to the ocean floor, strategically placing their offerings near underwater structures. This method requires patience and precision, as anglers carefully navigate the ocean floor to locate productive spots. The winter months, in particular, see an uptick in bottom fishing activity as some species become more accessible in deeper waters.

For those looking to add an element of mobility and excitement to their offshore fishing experience, live baiting is a go-to technique. This involves deploying live baitfish, such as mullet or menhaden, either on the surface or at various depths using specialized rigs. This method is especially effective when targeting predatory species like marlin and sailfish. Skilled anglers in Virginia Beach often use a combination of these techniques, adapting their approach based on the target species, prevailing conditions, and the unique characteristics of the offshore waters, ensuring a well-rounded and rewarding fishing experience.
