About Your Trip

Flowing between Altmar and Pulaski, the Salmon River delivers one of the most dynamic fly fishing experiences in Upstate New York.

Each fall, Lake-run Steelhead push upstream behind returning Chinook and Coho salmon, creating prime conditions for targeting these powerful fish on the fly. The combination of fresh runs, cool water, and migratory fish makes this a truly unique seasonal fishery.

Trips run from September through April, with peak Steelhead action typically occurring from October
through December.

Depending on river conditions and time of year, we employ both swinging flies and nymphing techniques. Some days favor classic swung presentations through tailouts and runs, while others call for precise nymphing through deeper holding water. Your guide will tailor the approach to maximize opportunities.

Most Salmon River trips are wade-based to allow full coverage of productive water, though a raft may be used when conditions allow.

If you want to learn how to target one of the hardest-fighting freshwater species and experience the energy of a true migratory fishery, the Salmon River belongs on your list.
