Private Snake River Guided Fishing Trip Washington
Spend Five Hours on the Water with Captain Leon Stafford

Private Snake River Guided Fishing Trip Washington

If you're looking for a top-rated fishing adventure in southeastern Washington, this private guided trip on the Snake River delivers exactly what serious anglers want. Captain Leon runs a customer favorite operation out of Texas Rapids Park in Dayton, taking up to six guests on his well-equipped 24-foot Boulton boat. You'll spend five solid hours working the productive waters where the Snake cuts through some of the best salmon and steelhead habitat in the Pacific Northwest. With flexible morning and afternoon departure times, this world-class fishery fits perfectly into your Washington fishing plans.

What to Expect on the Water

Your day starts at either 6:00 AM for the early bite or 1:00 PM if you prefer afternoon fishing action. Captain Leon meets you right at Texas Rapids Park, where his 24-foot aluminum Boulton boat waits ready to go. That Yamaha 225 engine gets you to the fish fast, and the boat's setup handles everything from drift fishing to trolling presentations. The Snake River here runs deep and steady, with plenty of holding water where salmon and steelhead stack up during their runs. Leon knows every productive drift, back eddy, and current seam that holds fish throughout the seasons. Whether you're a complete beginner or you've been chasing Pacific salmon for decades, he adjusts techniques to match your skill level and keeps everyone involved. The base rate covers three anglers, but the boat handles up to six comfortably when you add extra guests.

Gear Setup & River Techniques

Captain Leon provides all the essential fishing gear, so you don't need to haul rods and tackle across the state. He's got everything dialed in for Snake River conditions – from heavy spinning setups for big chinook to lighter gear perfect for summer steelhead. Depending on water levels and fish behavior, you'll use techniques like back-bouncing roe, pulling plugs in the current, or drifting spinners through the sweet spots. The Snake River demands specific presentations, and Leon's been perfecting these methods for years. His tackle selection includes the proven lures and baits that consistently produce fish in this system. Remember to grab your valid Washington State fishing license before the trip – that's the one thing you absolutely need to bring. Leon handles boat operation, fish cleaning, and making sure you're fishing the most productive water throughout your five-hour adventure.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Chinook salmon rule the Snake River during their prime runs, and these fish average 15 to 25 pounds with occasional monsters pushing 30-plus. They move through this stretch from late spring through early fall, with peak action typically hitting in late summer. Chinook fight like freight trains once hooked, making screaming runs and using the river's current to their advantage. What makes catching them here special is the clear water – you can often see these silver bullets following your lure before they commit to striking.

Steelhead trout provide year-round excitement, though summer-run fish offer the most consistent action during warmer months. These chrome-bright fighters average 6 to 12 pounds and absolutely explode when they feel the hook. Snake River steelhead are renowned for their aerial displays and never-give-up attitude. They hold in the deeper pools and current breaks, often requiring precise presentations to trigger strikes. The best part about steelhead fishing here is their unpredictability – they can hit anything from tiny spinners to large plugs depending on their mood.

Sockeye salmon show up during specific runs, typically in early to mid-summer when conditions align perfectly. These bright red fish average 5 to 8 pounds and provide non-stop action when they're moving through. Sockeye are famous for their incredible stamina and determination – they'll fight hard right to the net. While their runs can be timing-dependent, hitting a good sockeye bite on the Snake River creates memories that last forever. Their rich, red meat also makes them a customer favorite for the dinner table.

Captain Leon is a Pacific Northwest native and dedicated river angler with deep roots in the Columbia and Snake River systems. A Navy veteran, he brought his discipline and work ethic back home to Southeast Washington, where he’s spent decades fishing these waters and learning how they change with the seasons.

After an injury shifted his career path, Leon turned his lifelong passion into a full-time pursuit, attending captain school and building a guide business centered around sharing these fisheries
with others. His approach is simple—work hard, stay on fish, and never quit on the bite.

He specializes in the nuances of the region, from tracking salmon migration patterns to understanding where sturgeon hold in deep water, adjusting each trip based on conditions like water flow, weather, and seasonal movement.

Leon prides himself on being approachable and high-energy, creating a welcoming environment for anglers of all experience levels. Whether you’re chasing your first fish or looking to dial things in, his goal is to keep the trip safe, productive, and enjoyable from start to finish.
