Gulf of Mexico Yellowfin Tuna Management

Although the Gulf of Mexico only makes up about 2% of the annual landings of yellowfin tuna management practices have been important in the success of the species. Management of yellowfin tuna is controlled at the federal level with Gear restrictions, Time/area closures, ad Minimum size limits. Commercial fishing operations that harvest yellowfin must have a permit to do so and overall harvest is monitored in order to prevent overfishing

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Season 2023

The 2022 Atlantic bluefin tuna season opened July 1 and will close November 30th but will close earlier if the annual quota is met. Bluefin tuna bag limits vary by permit, vessel type, fish size, and region. When the 2023 Atlantic bluefin tuna season dates are announced they will be updated here.

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Management

The bluefin tuna populations suffered a population decline due to overfishing in the mid-1900s. In 1982 harvest quotas were set to make the fishery sustainable and since it went into effect, bluefin populations have remained stable.

As one of the most sought after fish in the Gulf, Red snapper were victims of overfishing from the end of World War II to the mid 1990’s. This was due to a combination of increased commercial harvest and recreational participation. A fishery rebuilding plan was implemented in 2005 with the goal of building the red snapper population back up by 2032. This plan includes bag limits, size restrictions, and specific fishing seasons which make red snapper the most heavily regulated species in the gulf.

What is a Super Combo License

The Super Combo is a very popular license choice for Texas outdoors enthusiasts because it includes both the hunting and fishing permissions needed to pursue the most popular game species throughout the state. For example, the Texas Super Combo package includes the following:

Texas resident fishing license

Texas resident hunting license

Fresh & saltwater fishing endorsements

Upland & migratory bird endorsements

You will still need to purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp to hunt waterfowl such as ducks and geese because that is a federal requirement sold separately from any Texas license packages. For 2022, the Super Combo license is sold for $68, which represents a significant discount over the cost of purchasing each type of license and endorsement separately. Both the digital and paper versions of the Super Combo license grant privileges to the same hunting and fishing opportunities at the same price, but there are a few differences between the new digital option and regular paper license that you should know.

Where to duck hunt

Flooded Timber

When the average person thinks of duck hunting, this is what they think of; it’s the iconic photo of a hunter leaning against an oak tree in a forest flooded by knee-deep water. Most waterfowl hunters dream of limiting out in a flooded timber hole. The Mississippi flyway has a majority of the flooded timber in the US. However, there are patches of it across the nation.

Tagging a Redfish with a Traditional Printed or Paper License

When you purchase your hunting and fishing license in Texas for the 2022-2023 season, you are given the option to receive either the same paper license that has been used by Texas outdoor enthusiasts in the past or the new digital version of your hunting and fishing license. If you selected the traditional paper or printed license, then the license comes with the printed tags physically attached at the edges of your license. Whether you are using the traditional paper license or the new digital license, you should record your catch immediately. If you wait until you get back to the boat launch to complete your tag, then you can be ticketed under both tagging systems.

After probably 10 feet of looking for tiny, tiny droplets and following them slowly but surely, I picked my head up and I saw it. An absolute huge pile of lung blood. I felt my entire body get filled with adrenaline and feel a rush of relief run through at the same time. My heart was beating straight inside my ears. Head back down I went, looking for the next spot.

Then my dad said “Hey, look up.” Whoomp, there it is, right off the side of the deer trail, piled up. We made a plan and cautiously walked up, side by side with a little spread, barrels up in case he decided to make a last run. My dad tried to throw a stick at it, missed, surprisingly it didn’t move. I walked up, poked it. It didn’t move. BIG BUCK DOWN.
