Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

What is tarpon fishing in Marathon all about?

Tarpon fishing in Marathon, Florida, offers anglers an exhilarating experience amidst the stunning backdrop of the Florida Keys. Known as the "Silver Kings" for their shimmering scales and powerful fights, tarpon are a prized catch for both seasoned anglers and novices alike. The waters surrounding Marathon provide ample opportunities to hook into these majestic fish, with their migratory patterns bringing them within reach of anglers throughout much of the year.

During the peak tarpon season, which typically spans from April to July, anglers flock to Marathon in pursuit of these acrobatic giants. Whether casting from the shoreline, wading in the shallows, or heading out into the deeper waters aboard a charter boat, there are numerous tactics and locations to explore. The famed Seven Mile Bridge and nearby channels offer prime tarpon habitat, with their strong currents and abundance of baitfish attracting these formidable predators.

Part of the allure of tarpon fishing in Marathon lies in the challenge they present. These fish are known for their aerial acrobatics and blistering runs, testing the skill and stamina of even the most experienced anglers. Landing a tarpon is a thrill like no other, and the memories of battling one of these magnificent creatures against the backdrop of Marathon's picturesque scenery will linger long after the fight is over. With its abundance of tarpon and breathtaking natural beauty, Marathon remains a premier destination for anglers seeking the ultimate tarpon fishing experience.

What are the most popular months to fish for tarpon in Marathon?

Tarpon fishing seasons in Marathon, Florida, offer anglers a dynamic and ever-changing experience throughout the year. While the peak season typically runs from April to July, when the tarpon migration brings large numbers of fish to the area, there are opportunities to target these silver giants virtually year-round. Winter months can also see decent tarpon action, particularly in warmer spells, as resident fish remain in the area and occasional migratory individuals pass through.

Spring heralds the arrival of the main tarpon migration, drawing anglers from far and wide to Marathon's shores. During this time, the waters around Marathon teem with tarpon, providing ample opportunities for anglers to hook into these powerful game fish. The warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours of spring create optimal conditions for tarpon fishing, with the fish often found in large schools as they navigate the channels and flats of the Florida Keys.

As summer arrives, the tarpon fishing action remains red hot in Marathon. While the peak migration may begin to taper off by late June or July, there are still plenty of tarpon to be found in the area. Summer storms can sometimes disrupt fishing plans, but they also bring changes in water temperature and currents that can stimulate tarpon activity. Additionally, summer offers the chance to target tarpon in less crowded conditions, as the initial rush of anglers subsides, allowing for a more relaxed and enjoyable fishing experience.

What techniques are popular for catching tarpon in Marathon?

Tarpon fishing in Marathon, Florida, demands a diverse set of techniques to successfully hook and land these elusive silver kings. One of the most popular methods is sight fishing, which involves scanning the shallows for cruising or rolling tarpon and presenting a well-placed cast with either live bait or artificial lures. This technique requires patience, keen observation, and precise casting skills to entice a strike from these wary fish.

Another effective technique for tarpon fishing in Marathon is drift fishing, particularly along channels, bridges, and flats where tarpon congregate to feed. Anglers drift with the current while presenting live bait or lures at various depths, allowing them to cover a wide area and intercept passing tarpon. This method can be highly productive, especially when targeting tarpon that are actively feeding or moving with the tide.

For anglers seeking an adrenaline-fueled challenge, fly fishing for tarpon in Marathon provides an exhilarating experience. Whether casting from the deck of a skiff or wading in the shallows, fly anglers use specialized flies and precise casting techniques to tempt tarpon into striking. The visual aspect of fly fishing, combined with the explosive takes and blistering runs of tarpon, makes it a thrilling pursuit for those who are up to the challenge.

What other species are popular in Marathon?

While tarpon may steal the spotlight, Marathon, Florida, offers a rich diversity of other species to target for anglers of all skill levels. Among the most sought-after species are bonefish, known for their elusive nature and blistering runs. The flats and shallow waters surrounding Marathon provide prime habitat for bonefish, offering anglers the chance to test their stealth and skill in pursuit of these prized game fish.

Another popular species for anglers visiting Marathon is the permit, revered for their strength and challenging behavior. Found in the same shallow waters as bonefish, permit present a formidable adversary, requiring precise presentations and quick reflexes to entice a strike. Their distinctive shape and finicky feeding habits add to the allure of targeting these "holy grail" fish in the crystal-clear waters of the Florida Keys.

For those seeking a change of pace from the flats, Marathon also offers excellent opportunities for offshore fishing. From mahi-mahi and sailfish to grouper and snapper, the deep waters beyond the reef abound with a variety of pelagic and bottom-dwelling species. Whether trolling, bottom fishing, or jigging, offshore anglers can enjoy thrilling battles and bountiful catches against the backdrop of Marathon's stunning ocean vistas.

Our outing with Captain Randy was great! It was my 12 yr old son's first time salt water inshore fishing trip. We made the best of extremely windy conditions, enjoyed some sunshine and caught fish. Randy was very patient and kind with my son, as it was his first time throwing a spinning reel and we had some small missteps along the way. The best result, and the one that means the most to me, was that my son LOVED our time on the water and wanted to go back out the next day!

My dad and I were able to squeeze in on a charter with Captain Eric fairly last minute which was awesome! He got us both on some sea trout first thing in the morning, lined us up on some tarpon but before I was able to take any shots on the fly rod, we spooked a tarpon and in came the bull sharks. We buzzed over to a different flat where I had shots at both snook and redfish. I didn’t end up making any of my shots with the fly rod but this was also my first saltwater fly fishing experience as well as my first guided trip so it was all pretty new to me. I’m just stoked we were able to get out in the first place. But I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Captain Eric and I certainly wouldn’t turn down another opportunity to have him guide us! He’s quiet but very focused and knowledgeable about the marine life and was able to give me casting tips as well with the fly rods. Thank you again for squeezing us in Eric!

Had a fun day out with Capt Chris. Although the wind and grass made the fly fishing challenging, he made every effort to navigate nature with alternative locations. The switchover to bait-cast resulted in several mangrove snappers, as well as trying for tarpon & snook. Would re-book in a blink with Capt. Chris at the helm!
