Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is wahoo fishing in St. Augustine all about?

In St. Augustine, anglers often set their sights on the formidable wahoo, a fast-swimming predator known for its razor-sharp teeth and blistering runs. Wahoo are typically found patrolling offshore waters, particularly along the edges of the Gulf Stream currents that pass relatively close to St. Augustine's coastline. These sleek and powerful fish are prized by anglers for their impressive size and hard-fighting nature. With their distinctive iridescent blue-green coloration and streamlined bodies, wahoo provide an exhilarating challenge for anglers seeking a thrilling offshore adventure.

One effective method for targeting wahoo in St. Augustine is high-speed trolling with large, flashy lures or rigged baits. Anglers typically troll at speeds ranging from 10 to 20 knots, covering a wide swath of water as they search for active fish. Using brightly colored lures or baits that mimic the appearance of fleeing prey can help attract the attention of passing wahoo. Additionally, deploying spreader bars, planers, and diving plugs can increase the chances of enticing strikes from these fast-moving predators. Anglers must remain vigilant and ready to strike at any moment, as wahoo are known for their lightning-fast attacks on unsuspecting prey.

Another productive technique for targeting wahoo in St. Augustine is slow-trolling with live baits such as bonito, mullet, or small tuna. Anglers typically deploy these baits behind the boat and troll at a slower speed, allowing the baits to swim naturally and entice strikes from hungry wahoo. Using wire leaders and sturdy tackle is essential when targeting wahoo, as their sharp teeth can easily cut through monofilament or fluorocarbon leaders. With their explosive strikes and powerful runs, hooking into a wahoo is an adrenaline-pumping experience that keeps anglers coming back for more in the offshore waters of St. Augustine.

What are the most popular months to fish for wahoo fishing in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, the seasons play a significant role in the presence and behavior of wahoo, offering anglers distinct opportunities throughout the year. Typically, wahoo are more prevalent in the offshore waters of St. Augustine during the warmer months of spring and summer, from March to August. As the Gulf Stream currents bring nutrient-rich waters closer to shore, wahoo follow, venturing within reach of anglers' boats. This period marks the peak season for targeting wahoo, as they actively feed on baitfish and other prey in the productive offshore waters.

As summer transitions into fall, wahoo fishing in St. Augustine remains productive, with these swift predators continuing to roam the offshore waters in search of food. From September to November, anglers can still encounter wahoo patrolling the Gulf Stream currents, providing ample opportunities for thrilling battles and memorable catches. While the cooler temperatures may alter their behavior slightly, wahoo remain active and aggressive feeders, making them a formidable target for anglers seeking an adrenaline-fueled challenge.

During the winter months, from December to February, wahoo activity in St. Augustine may decrease as colder temperatures move in and the Gulf Stream currents shift farther offshore. However, dedicated anglers can still find success targeting wahoo, particularly during periods of mild weather and when warm-water eddies bring pockets of favorable conditions closer to shore. While winter may present challenges in locating and catching wahoo, the possibility of encountering these swift predators keeps anglers hopeful and eager to venture offshore in pursuit of this prized game fish. Overall, while wahoo seasons in St. Augustine may vary, anglers can enjoy productive fishing for these swift and powerful predators throughout much of the year.

What techniques are popular for catching wahoo in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, targeting wahoo requires anglers to employ specialized techniques tailored to the swift and elusive nature of these predators. One effective method for catching wahoo is high-speed trolling with large, brightly colored lures or rigged baits. Anglers typically troll at speeds ranging from 10 to 20 knots, covering a wide area of water as they search for active fish. Using lures that mimic the appearance of fleeing prey can help attract the attention of passing wahoo.

Slow-trolling with live baits allows anglers to present a more natural offering to wahoo and increases the likelihood of enticing a strike from these powerful predators.

For anglers seeking a more hands-on approach, casting and retrieving artificial lures can also be effective techniques for targeting wahoo in St. Augustine. Lures such as swimbaits, soft plastics, or diving plugs can be worked along the edges of the Gulf Stream currents, drop-offs, and other structure-rich areas to entice strikes from opportunistic wahoo. Anglers should vary their retrieval speed and presentation to mimic the behavior of natural prey and increase their chances of enticing a strike. With their explosive strikes and powerful runs, hooking into a wahoo is an adrenaline-pumping experience that keeps anglers coming back for more in the offshore waters of St. Augustine.

What other species are popular in St. Augustine?

While targeting wahoo offers anglers an exhilarating pursuit in St. Augustine, the coastal waters of this area are teeming with a diverse array of other species to target. One popular option is the mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado. These vibrant-colored pelagic fish are often found in offshore waters, particularly around floating debris, weed lines, and other structure. Anglers target mahi-mahi using a variety of techniques, including trolling with brightly colored lures or rigged baits, as well as casting and jigging with metal jigs or live bait. With their acrobatic leaps and fierce fights, mahi-mahi provide anglers with thrilling battles and are prized for their delicious flesh.

Another sought-after species in St. Augustine is the sailfish, known for its distinctive sail-like dorsal fin and impressive speed. Sailfish are typically found in offshore waters, particularly around temperature breaks and current edges. Anglers target sailfish using trolling techniques with artificial lures or rigged baits, as well as live bait fishing. With their lightning-fast strikes and aerial displays, sailfish provide anglers with adrenaline-pumping battles and are considered one of the ultimate trophies in sport fishing.

In addition to mahi-mahi and sailfish, St. Augustine offers opportunities to target a variety of other species, including king mackerel, blackfin tuna, and grouper. King mackerel, known for their blistering runs and aerial displays, are often encountered patrolling the nearshore waters in search of baitfish. Blackfin tuna, prized for their sushi-grade flesh and hard-fighting nature, can be found patrolling the Gulf Stream currents along the continental shelf. Grouper, such as red and gag grouper, inhabit the reefs, wrecks, and ledges offshore, providing anglers with challenging battles and delectable fillets. With such a diverse range of species to target, anglers in St. Augustine have endless opportunities to explore and enjoy the rich bounty of its coastal waters.

Our group of 5 had a great experience with Scott, also known as “Steve”. It was a beautiful day on the water. Scott was knowledgeable and quickly responded when we needed him… which was often, as we were not experienced! We’ll go out with Scott again!

Best fishing day ever! We told Captain Troy we were serious about getting "keeper" fish to eat, and he did not disappoint. A full 12-hour trip into the Atlantic got us 46 delicious keepers (variety of snapper species, Jacks, Cobia, trigger fish, and more) with plenty of non-stop action, thanks to Troy's laser-focus on the fish. He provided good coaching on the best methods to drop our lines and haul up the bounty. He kept the boat on top of fish continuously, and had us haul up our lines as the boat drifted off so he could reposition the boat back over the fish. We literally spent no time at all just hanging out waiting for bites in an empty ocean. He knows some good spots; for the most part we were the only boat on the water as far as the eye could see; we only noticed a couple of other boats wander over toward us in one location. Action also included fighting with one or two giant groupers (line snapped off before we could get them to the boat) and a couple of small sharks. It got exciting when we had to quickly haul in a snapper to save it from the jaws of an impressive 6-foot hammerhead. Overall an exciting, successful, exhausting day on the water from sunup to sundown. Enjoyed grilled Cobia and Jack kabobs for dinner that evening.
