Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

Craig was amazing! I reached out the day before to ask some questions, he responded very quickly and took care of all my questions. We took out our 2 boys (5/7), and Craig was amazing with them. He put us in the right spot, taught us what to do, and the boys did the rest. He pointed us in the right direction as to where to get the crabs cooked, couldn't of asked for more. 100% recommend. We will do again if we're back in the area.

We had an great experience out on the ocean with this guide. From the start, everything was well-organized and professional, but still laid-back enough to just enjoy the day. The boat was clean and well-equipped, and you could tell the guide really knew the water and where to find fish. We were on fish quickly, and the action stayed steady throughout the trip. The guide was great about helping when needed but also let us do our own thing, which made it even more enjoyable. Whether it was baiting hooks, giving tips, or netting fish, they were right there without overdoing it. What stood out most was the knowledge and effort—they clearly put in the time to make sure we had a successful trip. We ended up bringing home a solid catch and had a great time doing it. Highly recommend this guide if you’re looking for a fun, productive day on the ocean. I’d definitely book again.

It was a really nice experience we had with Wade. It was a windy day, but we were lucky that day so we caught a lot of crabs. He is a very friendly and knowledgeable person.

Our crabbing trip exceeded my expectations. Craig's boat had comfortable seats. He offered us high quality lightweight life jackets (the blow-up kind). He told us the ocean was relatively calm and asked if we wanted to leave the bay and go out there. We did. He instructed us how to drop the crab pots, then entertained us (and our 4-year-old granddaughter) while we waited before checking the pots. We saw sea lions on a buoy; saw hundreds of jellyfish; learned about air bladders on fish like canary rockfish. our granddaughter got to view the radar screen showing where fish were. A first for any of our family: We caught our limit of crab, which Craig worked with my two sons to clean and cook for us. I felt completely safe with Craig. He is very knowledgeable and responsible; answered all my questions ahead of time. A wonderful, memorable day, well worth setting out before dawn.

We had an absolute blast with Captain Kelly. We were all new to Salmon wishing and Kelly took care of it all from bait to fillet. He treated us with respect and did not hesitate when we ended the trip early so we could use the restroom. My mom, girlfriend and I had fish for months by the end of our trip.
