Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What are the most popular months to go jetty fishing in Charleston Harbor?

Jetty fishing in Charleston Harbor offers anglers a year-round adventure with distinct seasonal flavors. Spring, spanning from March to May, marks the awakening of many species as they migrate into the harbor's waters. Anglers can expect to target species like spotted sea trout, red drum, and flounder as they become more active with the warming temperatures. The jetties provide prime spots for casting into deeper channels and around rocky structures where these fish congregate to feed on baitfish swept in by the tidal currents.

Summer brings a vibrant energy to jetty fishing in Charleston Harbor from June through August. This season sees an abundance of species such as Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, and black sea bass near the jetties. Anglers often enjoy the longer days and warmer waters, perfect for exploring various fishing techniques like jigging or trolling around the rocky formations. The challenge lies in navigating the bustling harbor waters and adjusting to the tidal movements that influence fish behavior throughout the day.

Fall transforms Charleston Harbor's jetty fishing experience from September to November as cooler temperatures trigger migrations and feeding frenzies among game fish. Species like bull redfish and striped bass move closer to the jetties, offering anglers opportunities to hook into larger catches. The changing foliage along the shoreline adds a scenic backdrop to fishing excursions, creating a memorable experience for anglers seeking both sport and relaxation in the picturesque waters of Charleston Harbor.

What techniques are popular for jetty fishing in Charleston Harbor?

Jetty fishing in Charleston Harbor offers a diverse range of opportunities for anglers targeting various species using different techniques. One popular catch around the jetties is the Spotted Seatrout, often found near submerged structures and drop-offs. Anglers frequently use live shrimp or mullet on popping corks or jig heads, casting into the deeper channels and around the rocky formations where Seatrout tend to gather. These fish are known for their voracious feeding habits, especially during tidal changes and low light conditions. Light to medium spinning tackle is commonly used to feel the subtle strikes and effectively handle these spirited fish.

Another prized target in Charleston Harbor's jetties is the Red Drum, particularly during their migrations in spring and fall. Anglers often deploy cut bait like mullet or menhaden on bottom rigs, positioning their baits near the deeper holes and channels where Red Drum patrol in search of food. Patience is key as these fish can be selective, but the rewards are substantial when a sizable Red Drum takes the bait. Stronger tackle is recommended to handle the powerful runs and headshakes these fish are known for, utilizing the structure of the jetties to their advantage during the fight.

For those seeking a challenging and rewarding fishing experience, the jetties around Charleston Harbor also provide opportunities to target Sheepshead. These fish are renowned for their sharp teeth and preference for crustaceans such as crabs and barnacles found along the rocky surfaces. Anglers often use small hooks baited with fiddler crabs or pieces of shrimp, presenting their baits close to the jetty rocks where Sheepshead feed. Detecting the subtle bites requires patience and a keen eye, as Sheepshead are notorious for stealing bait without being felt. Lighter tackle and finesse are crucial to successfully hook and land these elusive but prized fish.

What species are popular for jetty fishing in Charleston Harbor?

Jetty fishing in Charleston Harbor offers anglers a diverse range of fish species, each adding to the excitement and challenge of fishing along South Carolina's coast. One of the most prized catches is the Spotted Seatrout, locally known as "specks" or "trout." These fish are abundant around the jetties, especially in deeper channels and around structure where they ambush passing baitfish. Anglers often use live shrimp, mullet, or artificial lures like soft plastics and topwater plugs to target these voracious predators, which provide both a thrilling fight and delicious table fare.

Redfish, or Red Drum, are another popular species anglers target in Charleston Harbor's jetty waters. These powerful fish are known for their bronze backs and tail spots, and they frequent the shallower flats and channels near the jetties, particularly during the warmer months. Redfish are opportunistic feeders, consuming crabs, shrimp, and small fish, making them responsive to a variety of baits and lures. Anglers commonly use live bait such as blue crabs or cut mullet, as well as artificial baits like spoons and soft plastic swimbaits, to entice these hard-fighting fish.

For those seeking a bit of variety and perhaps a challenge, Sheepshead are also prevalent around Charleston's jetties. These fish are distinguished by their sharp, human-like teeth and vertical black and silver stripes. Sheepshead are often found near barnacle-covered rocks and pilings where they feed on crustaceans and mollusks. Anglers typically use fiddler crabs, shrimp, or barnacles as bait to attract these cautious feeders, which require finesse and patience to hook successfully. Jetty fishing in Charleston Harbor promises not only a chance to reel in some impressive fish but also an opportunity to enjoy the scenic coastal views and rich maritime history of the area.

We very much were looking forward to our trip. It was a bummer we did not catch anything at all (with the exception of a small bass). We did try all of the methods to catch them, but it just didn’t happen. We thought our guide did a good job. Except his playlist could have been more geared towards a family, not the profanity that he had on. Not a huge deal to us but you should cater towards your audience. Also the boat we were told we’d be on was suppose to have a bathroom, which we could have used.
