One of the primary targets for flats fishing enthusiasts in Choctawhatchee Bay is the redfish, also known as red drum. These powerful fish can be found cruising the shallows and feeding around structure like oyster bars and grassy edges. Anglers often use live bait such as shrimp or mullet, as well as artificial lures like spoons and soft plastics, to entice redfish into striking.

Speckled trout are another popular species found in Choctawhatchee Bay, prized for their aggressive strikes and tasty fillets. These fish inhabit the bay's shallow waters and grass flats, particularly during cooler months when they are more active and abundant. Anglers typically target speckled trout using live bait like shrimp or pinfish, as well as artificial lures such as topwater plugs and swimbaits. Spring and fall are particularly productive seasons for speckled trout fishing in Choctawhatchee Bay, coinciding with their spawning and feeding patterns.

These bottom-dwelling fish are often found near sandy or muddy bottoms, as well as around structure like docks and bridges where they ambush passing prey. Anglers target flounder using live bait such as mullet or mud minnows, as well as jigging with artificial lures designed to mimic their natural prey. Flounder fishing can be productive throughout the year, with peak seasons during their migrations and spawning periods. Overall, flats fishing in Choctawhatchee Bay offers anglers a rich and varied experience, with opportunities to catch a diverse range of inshore species amidst the bay's picturesque coastal landscape.

Summer months bring warmer temperatures and can be productive for fishing early in the morning or late in the evening when fish are more active. Winter fishing in Choctawhatchee Bay tends to focus on deeper channels and nearshore areas where fish seek warmer waters, offering different challenges and rewards for anglers willing to brave cooler conditions.

What techniques are popular for flats fishing in Choctawhatchee Bay?

Flats fishing in Choctawhatchee Bay, situated along the Emerald Coast of Florida, offers anglers diverse opportunities to target various inshore species amidst its shallow, clear waters and extensive grass flats. Understanding the types of fish available and effective techniques enhances the fishing experience throughout the year.

One of the most sought-after species in Choctawhatchee Bay is the redfish, known for its strong fight and presence in shallow waters. Anglers often employ sight-fishing techniques during calm conditions, using live or cut bait, as well as artificial lures such as spoons, soft plastics, and topwater plugs. These tactics are particularly effective around oyster beds, sandbars, and grassy flats, where redfish feed on shrimp, crabs, and small fish.

Speckled trout are another prized catch in Choctawhatchee Bay, especially during the cooler months from fall through spring. Anglers target them using live shrimp or artificial lures like soft plastic jerkbaits and shrimp imitations. Trout can be found near drop-offs, deeper channels, and grassy edges where they ambush prey. Adjusting to tidal movements and focusing on areas with structure or baitfish concentrations can significantly improve catch rates.

Flounder are also prevalent in Choctawhatchee Bay, particularly in sandy bottoms and around structure like docks and bridges. Anglers use techniques such as jigging with live minnows, shrimp, or soft plastic baits that mimic small fish or crustaceans. We had a great time! I didn’t know rays were so resilient that you could get them with an arrow and the would heal within a few days. Our guide Colby was awesome. He found a bunch of rays for us and helped us after each catch. Hew was awesome!

We had a great experience. This was our first time booking with Captain Steve, but our second time fishing off PCB. Steve exceeded our expectations. He made sure our little guy had a memorable time. He was great with our 5 year old and appreciated his love of fishing. In our 3 hours we saw dolphins, jelly fish, and sea turtles. We also caught bonitas, King mackerel, Spanish mackerel, trigger fish, red grouper, red snapper, ruby lips, and remora. Steve fileted the mackerals for us to bring home. We will make sure to book with him next year. Thank you Captain Steve!

We were booked with Captain Joey, but we were guided and taken care of by Captain Mindy. I’m sure Joey is great, but I can’t imagine it going any better than it did with Mindy. She took great care of us, she was very patient with our kids (12&13), and helped us every step of the way. My wife and kids have never bow fished. I haven’t done so in 25+ years. So she basically had a boat full of newbies. We caught several! We missed several more! It was a lot of action and we enjoyed being out there at night for a change. Then my daughter caught the fish of the night! A very nice ray. My son had to shoot back up to make sure we landed it, so that made it even cooler. We would definitely take this trip again. If you get to go with Mindy that’ll be a bonus!
