Everything to Know About Booking a Duck Key nearshore fishing charter

What are the best nearshore fishing charters in Duck Key?

What is nearshore fishing in Duck Key all about?

Nearshore fishing in Key Largo offers a range of techniques to suit the diverse marine environment and abundant fish species found in the area. One effective method is live bait fishing, which works well for targeting species such as snook, mangrove snapper, and grouper. Anglers often use live shrimp, pinfish, or mullet, presenting them on a simple rig or under a popping cork. Fishing near structures like docks, bridges, and mangrove-lined shorelines can be particularly productive, as these spots provide cover and feeding opportunities for many fish.

Artificial lures are another popular option for nearshore fishing in Key Largo. Soft plastics, such as paddle tails and shrimp imitations, can be effective for a variety of species, including snook and trout. These lures can be worked slowly through the water column or bounced along the bottom to mimic the movement of small baitfish. Topwater lures are also a good choice, especially during early mornings or late evenings when fish are actively feeding on the surface. The clear waters of Key Largo allow anglers to see their lures and observe fish behavior, making it easier to adjust techniques for the best results.

For a more hands-on approach, sight fishing is a rewarding technique in Key Largo, particularly in the shallow, clear waters around the mangroves and seagrass beds. This method involves spotting fish visually and casting a lure or bait directly to them. Sight fishing is especially effective for targeting species like permit and bonefish, which are often found cruising the flats. Anglers need to be stealthy and precise with their casts to avoid spooking the fish. The clarity of the water in Key Largo enhances the experience, allowing for a more interactive and challenging fishing adventure.

What are the most popular months to go nearshore fishing in Duck Key?

Nearshore fishing in Key Largo presents anglers with a diverse array of species to target, thanks to its rich marine environment and various habitats. One of the most sought-after species is the snook. Snook are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs, and they are often found around mangroves, docks, and other structures. They are particularly active during the warmer months and can be caught using live bait like shrimp or mullet, as well as artificial lures such as soft plastics and topwater plugs. Their challenging fight and tasty fillets make them a favorite among local anglers.

Another prominent species in Key Largo is the mangrove snapper. These fish are commonly found near structures such as reefs and mangroves, where they seek cover and prey. Mangrove snapper are known for their excellent eating quality and are often targeted with live bait or small jigs. They can provide a fun and rewarding fishing experience, especially when fishing around the numerous reefs and submerged rocks in the area.

Additionally, Key Largo offers opportunities to catch species like grouper and tarpon. Grouper, which are found around reef structures and underwater ledges, can be caught using heavy tackle and live or cut bait. They are known for their strong fighting ability and large size, making them a prized catch for many anglers. Tarpon, on the other hand, are often encountered in the warmer months and are sought after for their impressive size and acrobatic leaps. Anglers targeting tarpon typically use large live bait or big artificial lures. The variety of species available in Key Largo ensures that there is always something exciting to catch for nearshore fishing enthusiasts.

Capt. Ron was a true professional. He called me the morning of our departure to ensure we were still interested in the fishing trip since the weather was not fantastic (high winds). He provided details about the length of time to travel to/from the fishing spot and conditions while fishing. When we arrived (earlier than scheduled departure time) he was ready and willing to get started early. He put us on the fish and showed us how to cast and catch. We caught so may fish we could not take time to take pictures (except the few attached). It was an awesome experience and hope to book with Ron next time we are in Islamorada. 10 thumbs up!!
