Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is nearshore fishing in Duck Key all about?

Nearshore fishing in Key Largo offers a range of techniques to suit the diverse marine environment and abundant fish species found in the area. One effective method is live bait fishing, which works well for targeting species such as snook, mangrove snapper, and grouper. Anglers often use live shrimp, pinfish, or mullet, presenting them on a simple rig or under a popping cork. Fishing near structures like docks, bridges, and mangrove-lined shorelines can be particularly productive, as these spots provide cover and feeding opportunities for many fish.

Artificial lures are another popular option for nearshore fishing in Key Largo. Soft plastics, such as paddle tails and shrimp imitations, can be effective for a variety of species, including snook and trout. These lures can be worked slowly through the water column or bounced along the bottom to mimic the movement of small baitfish. Topwater lures are also a good choice, especially during early mornings or late evenings when fish are actively feeding on the surface. The clear waters of Key Largo allow anglers to see their lures and observe fish behavior, making it easier to adjust techniques for the best results.

For a more hands-on approach, sight fishing is a rewarding technique in Key Largo, particularly in the shallow, clear waters around the mangroves and seagrass beds. This method involves spotting fish visually and casting a lure or bait directly to them. Sight fishing is especially effective for targeting species like permit and bonefish, which are often found cruising the flats. Anglers need to be stealthy and precise with their casts to avoid spooking the fish. The clarity of the water in Key Largo enhances the experience, allowing for a more interactive and challenging fishing adventure.

We booked a 3/4 day after speaking with the captain the (plan) was made to shoot out deep and if we were not hitting them we would come in on the 3/4 day booking rather than a full day. Captain troy and his first mate worked as hard as I have ever seen to get fish on the boat. Not sure but at one time I think he had a deep running plug in one marlin plug and 4 top water trolling plugs so it looked like they were shooting for many different depths. We finally got into the mahi-mahi it was on. The first mate and captain maneuvered through 4 men as quick as humanly possible pulling fish off the lines and baiting hooks and handing them back. The only true way to explain it would be controlled chaos. These guys are GREAT at what they do and both the first mate and the captain seem to be fantastic people in there own right. So if your looking for a hard working boat stop here at Miller Time....

Some times you are fortunate to meet people that leave a deep impression an impregnation on you. Captain Mark is one of these rare persons. I was fortunate to go fishing with him today and we had a blast. He is so kind, so full of knowledge, that I do recommend going fishing with him. His repeated actions around the wounded warrior project are a tribute to his care about his peers and good people in general.

  • ★★★★★
Had a most excellent time. We were scheduled for an offshore trip but wind and waves caused us to cancel this trip. However, we rescheduled for later in the day for a tarpon fishing excursion. This was a blast ! We saw sharks up close and landed several yellow jacks which gave us a good fight before being returned to the water. After trying and trying (never give up) we snagged a good sized tarpon. After a good fight which included multiple boat maneuvers it was brought to the side of the boat before being cut loose to fight another day. We thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with the captain and first mate. Both were very attentive to us, making sure that our hooks were still baited and that we had all the help required for landing and documenting our catches before returning them to the water. A great time was had by all! The boat was immaculate and we had no issues if any sort.

We had a great full day trip with Captain Chris. Chris really helped my wife with his patience and encouragement fight big fish in deep water and use lighter tackle at the shallower wreck. She landed nice yellowtail, yellow jack, mackerel and amberjack. Chris worked hard all day keeping us in fish and rigged as the shark tax was high though the morning. At the end of the day we got great local restaurant recommendations and tips on cooking our catch. Loved the boat playlist! Highly recommend and hope to come back to fish with Chris again.
