Everything to Know About Booking a Wando River river fishing charter

What are the best river fishing charters in the Wando River?

What is river fishing in Wando River all about?

River fishing in the Wando River, located in the Charleston area of South Carolina, provides anglers with a rich and diverse fishing experience in a picturesque setting. The Wando River meanders through marshlands and coastal habitats, offering a mix of saltwater and brackish water environments. This creates an ideal habitat for a variety of fish species, making the Wando River a popular destination for both local and visiting anglers looking to enjoy a day on the water.

One of the main attractions of fishing in the Wando River is the chance to catch redfish, also known as red drum. These fish are abundant in the river, especially in the shallow flats and around oyster beds where they feed on crabs and small fish. Anglers often use light tackle and live bait, such as shrimp and mud minnows, or artificial lures like soft plastics and spoons to target redfish. The thrill of battling a strong redfish in the serene surroundings of the Wando River is a highlight for many anglers.

In addition to redfish, the Wando River is home to other sought-after species like spotted seatrout, flounder, and sheepshead. Spotted seatrout can be found in deeper channels and around structure, often biting on live bait and a variety of lures. Flounder are commonly targeted near the river's sandy bottoms and around docks, using techniques like bottom fishing with live bait or jigging with soft plastics. Sheepshead, known for their strong fight and delicious taste, are often caught near bridge pilings and rocky areas where they feed on crustaceans. The variety of fish species and the different techniques required to catch them make river fishing in the Wando River a versatile and rewarding experience for anglers of all skill levels.

What are the most popular months to go river fishing in Wando River?

Fishing in the Wando River, located near Charleston, South Carolina, offers a rich and varied experience throughout the year, with distinct seasonal patterns influencing the types of species available and the best techniques to use. In the spring, the warming waters signal the arrival of species like redfish (red drum) and speckled trout, which move into the shallows to feed on shrimp, crabs, and baitfish. Anglers often find success using live bait such as shrimp and mullet, as well as artificial lures like soft plastics and topwater plugs. The spring season also sees the return of flounder, which can be targeted around sandy bottoms and drop-offs.

Summer in the Wando River is characterized by warmer water temperatures and an abundance of baitfish, which attracts a variety of game fish. Redfish and speckled trout remain prevalent, particularly in the early morning and late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Snook, another popular species during the summer months, can be found near mangroves, docks, and other structures. Anglers targeting snook often use live bait such as pilchards and pinfish or artificial lures like jerkbaits and swimbaits. Additionally, summer is a great time for targeting larger species like tarpon, which can be found rolling in deeper waters and along the river's channels.

Fall brings cooler temperatures and some of the best fishing conditions of the year on the Wando River. As the water cools, fish like redfish, speckled trout, and flounder become more active, feeding heavily in preparation for the winter months. This is an excellent time for anglers to target these species using live bait or jigging techniques. The fall season also offers opportunities to catch striped bass, which migrate into the river during this time. Anglers can enjoy productive fishing in the Wando River while taking in the beautiful autumn scenery, making it a favorite time of year for many local fishermen.

What techniques are popular for river fishing in Wando River?

The Wando River, located in the Charleston area of South Carolina, is a favorite spot for anglers due to its diverse fishing opportunities. One of the most popular types of river fishing here is targeting redfish, also known as red drum. Anglers often use spinning rods and live bait, such as shrimp or mud minnows, to lure these fish. Fishing near the river's grassy banks, oyster beds, and submerged structures can yield great results, especially during the warmer months when redfish are most active.

Another common technique in the Wando River is trolling, which is particularly effective for catching species like striped bass and speckled trout. Trolling involves slowly moving the boat while dragging lures or baited lines behind it. This method allows anglers to cover more water and locate schools of fish. Using a variety of lures, such as crankbaits, soft plastics, and spoons, can help attract different species. The changing tides in the Wando River create excellent conditions for trolling, as fish often move with the currents in search of food.

For those who enjoy a more hands-on approach, kayak fishing is a popular technique on the Wando River. Kayaks provide a quiet and maneuverable way to explore the river's many creeks and marshes, where larger boats can't go. Anglers can use lightweight gear and artificial lures, such as topwater plugs and soft plastics, to target species like flounder and black drum. Kayak fishing allows for a closer connection to the water and the surrounding natural beauty, making it a favorite among many local anglers who appreciate the serenity and challenge it offers.

What species are popular for river fishing in Wando River?

River fishing in the Wando River, which winds through the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, provides anglers with the opportunity to catch a variety of popular species. One of the most sought-after fish in this river is the Red Drum, also known as Redfish. These fish are known for their hard-fighting nature and distinctive red color with a black spot near the tail. Anglers often target Redfish in the marshes and shallow flats, using live bait such as mullet or shrimp, as well as artificial lures like soft plastics and spoons. Redfish are particularly abundant in the Wando River during the warmer months, making it an ideal time for anglers to pursue them.

Another popular species to catch in the Wando River is the Spotted Seatrout. These fish are prized for their aggressive strikes and delicate flavor. They are typically found in deeper channels, grassy flats, and around oyster bars. Anglers use a variety of methods to catch Spotted Seatrout, including live bait such as shrimp and small baitfish, as well as artificial lures like jigs and topwater plugs. The best time to target Spotted Seatrout in the Wando River is during the cooler months, when they move inshore to find warmer waters.

The Wando River is also home to the feisty Flounder, a flatfish known for its excellent taste and challenging fight. Flounder are often found near the river’s sandy bottoms, around docks, and along the edges of channels. Anglers targeting Flounder typically use live bait such as minnows or finger mullet, or soft plastic lures that mimic small fish. These fish are known for their ambush tactics, lying in wait to strike at unsuspecting prey. Flounder fishing can be particularly productive in the late summer and early fall when these fish are more active and feeding aggressively in preparation for their offshore migration.

Simply could not have had a more fun and enjoyable morning on the water than we did with Captain Carlo!!! He knew the right spots, and over 4 hours our party of 5 caught more than 30 fish representative of almost 10 different species, including an couple of really fun bonnett head shark fights (we caught 4 sharks without trying to catch sharks). A great introduction to fishing for my first-timer son (7 years old) and a great time for his cousins (age 13 and 17) and me and my brother-in-law. I can't recommend Capt. Carlo strongly enough. I'll definitely be booking with him next time we are back in Charleston. Thanks to Captain Experiences for making the whole process so simple and effective. A+++++++
