What is amberjack in Charleston all about?

In Charleston's coastal waters, amberjack, often referred to as "reef donkeys" for their powerful fighting ability, are a prized catch among anglers seeking exhilarating offshore fishing adventures. These robust and aggressive fish inhabit a variety of offshore habitats, including wrecks, reefs, and other underwater structures, making them a challenging and rewarding target for anglers. Amberjack are known for their impressive size and strength, often putting up a spirited fight that tests the skills and stamina of even the most experienced fishermen.

Anglers targeting amberjack in Charleston typically employ a variety of techniques to entice these formidable predators. Vertical jigging with heavy metal lures is a popular method, allowing anglers to drop their baits directly to the depths where amberjack often lurk. Additionally, live baiting with large, lively offerings such as blue runners or cigar minnows can be highly effective in enticing strikes from hungry amberjack. Whether jigging, live baiting, or trolling around offshore structures, anglers must be prepared for a hard-hitting battle when hooked into an amberjack.

Charleston's abundance of offshore reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures provides ideal habitat for amberjack throughout much of the year. However, their availability can vary seasonally, with peak fishing typically occurring during the warmer months when water temperatures are more favorable. Despite their challenging reputation, the thrill of tangling with an amberjack and the satisfaction of landing one of these prized game fish make them a sought-after target among offshore anglers in Charleston's rich and diverse fishery.

What are the most popular months to fish for amberjack in Charleston?

In Charleston, the presence and abundance of amberjack can fluctuate throughout the year, influenced by various factors such as water temperature, currents, and prey availability. Typically, the prime season for targeting amberjack in Charleston's waters coincides with the warmer months of late spring through early fall. During this time, water temperatures rise, attracting these powerful predators to offshore reefs, wrecks, and other underwater structures where they congregate in search of prey.

As the seasons change and water temperatures begin to cool in late fall and winter, amberjack sightings and catches in Charleston may become less frequent. However, some individuals may still be present in offshore waters, particularly during mild winters or periods of warmer weather. Anglers may also encounter amberjack during their seasonal migrations along the Atlantic coast, with Charleston serving as a stopover point along their journey.

Understanding the seasonal patterns of amberjack in Charleston is essential for anglers looking to maximize their chances of success. By targeting these fish during their peak seasons and focusing their efforts around offshore structures where amberjack are known to gather, anglers can increase their likelihood of hooking into one of these hard-fighting predators. Whether fishing from private boats, charters, or offshore excursions, Charleston's rich fishery offers ample opportunities for anglers to pursue and reel in prized catches of amberjack during the peak fishing seasons.

What techniques are popular for catching amberjack in Charleston?

Anglers in Charleston employ various techniques to target amberjack, leveraging the species' preference for structure and its aggressive feeding behavior. One common method is vertical jigging, where anglers drop heavy metal lures vertically down to the depths where amberjack typically congregate around offshore wrecks, reefs, and other underwater structures. Jigging allows anglers to present their baits directly to the fish and trigger strikes by mimicking the movement of injured baitfish, enticing even the most cautious amberjack to bite.

Live baiting is another effective technique for amberjack fishing in Charleston, with anglers deploying large, lively baits such as blue runners, cigar minnows, or live baitfish rigged on heavy tackle. These baits are typically fished near the bottom around offshore structures, where amberjack are known to patrol in search of prey. Live bait presents a natural and enticing meal for amberjack, often resulting in aggressive strikes that provide anglers with exhilarating battles and memorable catches.

Trolling is also a popular technique for targeting amberjack in Charleston's offshore waters, particularly when covering large areas in search of active fish. Anglers troll with large diving plugs or rigged baits behind a moving boat, varying trolling speed and depth to effectively target amberjack at different levels of the water column. This method allows anglers to cover a wide area and locate schools of amberjack, providing exciting opportunities to hook into these powerful predators and test their skills against one of the ocean's most formidable game fish.

What other species are popular in Charleston?

Beyond amberjack, Charleston offers a diverse array of fish species for anglers to target, ensuring exciting fishing opportunities throughout the year. One popular species among anglers is the red drum, also known as redfish, which inhabits the marshes, estuaries, and nearshore waters around Charleston. Renowned for their powerful runs and aggressive strikes, red drum provide anglers with thrilling battles and the chance to reel in a prized catch. Whether targeting them with live bait, artificial lures, or fly fishing, anglers can find success pursuing red drum in Charleston's productive fishing grounds.

Another sought-after species in Charleston's waters is the spotted seatrout, a highly prized game fish known for its acrobatic leaps and voracious feeding habits. Spotted seatrout can be found in a variety of habitats, including grass flats, tidal creeks, and around structure such as docks and oyster beds. Anglers targeting spotted seatrout often use a variety of techniques, including casting artificial lures, drifting live bait, or fly fishing, to entice strikes from these elusive predators. With their impressive fighting abilities and delectable flesh, spotted seatrout are a favorite among anglers seeking a memorable fishing experience in Charleston.

In addition to red drum and spotted seatrout, Charleston's waters are teeming with a wide range of other species that offer exciting opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. Our two boat trip was absolutely electric. First off, Capt. Chris' boat was perfect. For the price point, you'd be hard pressed to find a better fishing charter deal out of Charleston. The second boat in our group was equally as nice. Both boats were super comfortable, we just sat in the back on beanbags and drank beer as we raced out about 40 miles offshore. The guides gave us an in depth safety talk before taking off and took every safety precaution available, they definitely found a happy medium between fun and safety though. They were also very well informed about what was in/out of season, and the parameters for keeper fish. On first drop, we had 2 really nice red snapper hookups. Once that bite ran cold, we wasted no time, hopping around to multiple different locations, filling the cooler up with vermillion and other good eating fish. Even got a few 5+ foot sharks for the young'n that was with us. He was so stoked! We ran into a bit of weather but that didn't phase the guides, they had contingency plans to keep us busy. We elected to run deeper to avoid the thunderstorm that formed between us and the land, which meant we got a few extra hours of fishing (no complaints). The highlight of the trip was chumming up a cobia feeding frenzy right on the surface before we booked it back to the marina. Any time you can topwater fish for cobia, you're in for a treat. We almost landed a trophy cobia before a 8+ foot shark breached the surface and completely annihilated it about 20 feet off the back of the boat. It was so primal, none of us cared that we lost the trophy. I recommend these guys to anyone, beginners or lifetime anglers. Will definitely be using them again!

John S. with Chris A. of Charleston, South Carolina
