trip description for Overnight Offshore - 38' Luhrs in Freeport

Get ready for an epic 24-hour Offshore adventure with Captains JT and Danny chasing the big boys like Marlin, Tile Fish, Grouper, and Tuna! You will launch from Freeport around 10 am aboard their one-of-a-kind sport fisher for a luxury seafaring experience. At 38 feet long and almost 14 feet wide, the vessel offers lots of shaded space, two AC systems, satellite TV and music, and a legendary hull design. Needless to say, you will be much more comfortable than on most other boats. It’s equipped with state-of-the-art electronics, safety equipment including a satellite phone, epirb, and 8 man life raft. The beautiful vessel is powered by twin 420 horsepower Yanmar diesel engines that are meticulously maintained by Captain JT. After Captain JT has cranked up the engines, you'll motor offshore a ways to spend the day bottom fishing for Grouper, Golden tile, Amberjack and whatever else emerges from the blue depths! When the bite slows down toward the afternoon, Captains JT and Danny will haul in the lines, and motor out a little deeper to the 80-110 mile range. While you get some much-needed R&R, they will get the boat into position for the Tuna bite early the next morning. The Tuna bite is usually on a couple of hours before sunrise, so after a couple of hours of sleep, you'll wake up around 4 am to start jigging for Tuna! This is one of the only times slots when big tuna come up from the deep to feed and they are usually swimming back down to deeper water by the time the sun comes up. So you'll jig until that sun comes up then troll around in the rest of the morning before you motor back in! In terms of gear, we will come fully equipped with all the premium bottom fishing rods and reels, Penn international bent butt trolling rod and reels, and two heavy-duty electric reels for deep dropping down 350+ feet. The navigation system has more than 3000 waypoints saved over the years so they can pinpoint these feeding grounds easily as well! Read More

What is wahoo fishing in Galveston all about?

Wahoo, renowned for their speed, power, and delicious meat, are an exciting and highly sought-after species for anglers in Galveston. These pelagic predators roam the offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico, offering thrilling opportunities for anglers to test their skills and tackle. Wahoo are known for their distinct blue-green coloration, slender bodies, and razor-sharp teeth, making them formidable adversaries for anglers seeking an adrenaline-pumping fishing experience.

Wahoo fishing in Galveston is most productive during the warmer months of the year, typically from late spring through early fall. During this time, wahoo migrate closer to the coast in search of prey, congregating around underwater structures, offshore reefs, and temperature breaks in the water. Anglers often troll with high-speed lures or rigged baits to target wahoo, covering large areas of water to locate active fish. Additionally, wahoo are known to gather near floating debris, weed lines, and current edges, providing prime opportunities for anglers to hook into these speedsters.

Anglers targeting wahoo in Galveston typically use heavy-duty trolling equipment, including sturdy rods, high-capacity reels, and wire leaders to withstand the brute force and sharp teeth of these powerful fish. Popular trolling lures for wahoo fishing include skirted baits, diving plugs, and jet heads designed to mimic the movement of baitfish. Live bait such as bonito, mullet, or ballyhoo can also be effective in enticing wahoo strikes. With their impressive speed and explosive strikes, wahoo provide anglers in Galveston with exhilarating fishing experiences and the opportunity to land prized catches for the dinner table.

What are the most popular months to fish for wahoo in Galveston?

Wahoo fishing in Galveston is largely influenced by seasonal patterns and water temperatures, which dictate the movements and abundance of these pelagic predators. The prime season for targeting wahoo in Galveston typically aligns with the warmer months of the year, spanning from late spring through early fall. During this period, wahoo migrate closer to the coast, following the warming waters and the movement of baitfish. As temperatures rise, wahoo become more active and aggressive, providing anglers with ample opportunities to hook into these high-speed predators.

Late spring and early summer are particularly productive times for wahoo fishing in Galveston, as water temperatures begin to rise and baitfish populations increase. During this period, wahoo can often be found near offshore structures such as oil rigs, reefs, and underwater ridges, where they gather to feed on schools of baitfish. Anglers targeting wahoo during these months typically experience higher catch rates and more consistent action as these fish actively hunt for prey.

As summer transitions into fall, wahoo fishing in Galveston remains productive, with opportunities to encounter these speedsters continuing well into September and October. While water temperatures may begin to cool slightly, wahoo remain active and readily strike lures and baits presented by anglers. Additionally, fall weather patterns can create favorable conditions for wahoo fishing, with calmer seas and clearer water enhancing visibility and making it easier for anglers to locate and target these elusive predators. Overall, the wahoo season in Galveston offers anglers a thrilling and rewarding fishing experience during the warmer months of the year.

What techniques are popular for catching wahoo in Galveston?

Wahoo fishing in Galveston requires anglers to employ specialized techniques geared towards targeting these fast and aggressive predators. One of the most effective techniques for catching wahoo is high-speed trolling, where anglers troll at speeds exceeding 10 knots to mimic the rapid movement of baitfish. Anglers typically deploy a spread of lures and rigged baits, such as skirted trolling lures, diving plugs, or jet heads, behind the boat at varying distances and depths. This method allows anglers to cover a large area of water and increase their chances of enticing wahoo strikes.

Another productive technique for wahoo fishing in Galveston is targeting specific underwater structures and features where these predators are known to congregate. Anglers often focus their efforts around offshore reefs, oil rigs, underwater ridges, and temperature breaks in the water column. Wahoo are known to patrol these areas in search of prey, making them prime locations for anglers to target. By carefully positioning their boat and deploying lures or baits at the appropriate depths, anglers can increase their chances of hooking into wahoo patrolling these structures.

Live bait fishing can also be effective for targeting wahoo in Galveston, especially when targeting larger specimens. Anglers often deploy live bonito, mullet, or ballyhoo rigged on heavy-duty tackle to entice wahoo strikes. This method requires patience and precise presentation, as anglers wait for wahoo to locate and ambush the live bait. Whether trolling at high speeds, targeting specific underwater structures, or deploying live bait, anglers in Galveston have a variety of techniques at their disposal to successfully target wahoo and enjoy an exhilarating fishing experience.

What other species are popular in Galveston?

While wahoo fishing in Galveston offers an exhilarating experience, there are numerous other species that anglers can target in these rich Gulf waters. One popular target species is king mackerel, also known as kingfish, which shares similar habitats and feeding grounds with wahoo. King mackerel are known for their aggressive strikes and blistering runs, making them a favorite among anglers seeking fast-paced action. They can be caught using a variety of techniques, including trolling with live bait or artificial lures near offshore structures and along the edges of weed lines.

Another sought-after species in Galveston is red snapper, prized for its firm white flesh and delectable flavor. Red snapper inhabit the offshore reefs and structures scattered throughout the Gulf, providing anglers with ample opportunities for bottom fishing. Anglers can target red snapper using a variety of baits, including squid, cut bait, and live baitfish, presented on sturdy bottom rigs. However, it's essential to adhere to seasonal regulations and bag limits for red snapper, as they are managed under strict conservation measures to ensure sustainable fishing practices.

For those looking for larger pelagic species, yellowfin tuna are a prized catch in the waters off Galveston. Yellowfin tuna are renowned for their speed and power, offering anglers a challenging fight once hooked. These tuna can be found patrolling offshore waters, often associating with schools of baitfish or congregating around underwater structures. Anglers targeting yellowfin tuna typically use heavy-duty trolling gear and deploy a variety of lures, such as skirted baits, diving plugs, and cedar plugs, to entice strikes. With their impressive size and fighting prowess, yellowfin tuna provide anglers in Galveston with an unforgettable fishing experience.

Want to give a big, "Thanks!" to Jonathan at Captain Experiences for hooking me and my family up with Captain Mike and Daisy out of Surfside Beach, TX. Captain Mike took us right where the fish were right off the bat on our first stop where we caught our limit of red snapper including a 32", 22 pounder! We were also able to "rescue" some king fish out of the water as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our time deep sea fishing and look forward to our next outing.
