trip description for Overnight Offshore - 38' Luhrs in Freeport

Get ready for an epic 24-hour Offshore adventure with Captains JT and Danny chasing the big boys like Marlin, Tile Fish, Grouper, and Tuna! You will launch from Freeport around 10 am aboard their one-of-a-kind sport fisher for a luxury seafaring experience. At 38 feet long and almost 14 feet wide, the vessel offers lots of shaded space, two AC systems, satellite TV and music, and a legendary hull design. Needless to say, you will be much more comfortable than on most other boats. It’s equipped with state-of-the-art electronics, safety equipment including a satellite phone, epirb, and 8 man life raft. The beautiful vessel is powered by twin 420 horsepower Yanmar diesel engines that are meticulously maintained by Captain JT. After Captain JT has cranked up the engines, you'll motor offshore a ways to spend the day bottom fishing for Grouper, Golden tile, Amberjack and whatever else emerges from the blue depths! When the bite slows down toward the afternoon, Captains JT and Danny will haul in the lines, and motor out a little deeper to the 80-110 mile range. While you get some much-needed R&R, they will get the boat into position for the Tuna bite early the next morning. The Tuna bite is usually on a couple of hours before sunrise, so after a couple of hours of sleep, you'll wake up around 4 am to start jigging for Tuna! This is one of the only times slots when big tuna come up from the deep to feed and they are usually swimming back down to deeper water by the time the sun comes up. So you'll jig until that sun comes up then troll around in the rest of the morning before you motor back in! In terms of gear, we will come fully equipped with all the premium bottom fishing rods and reels, Penn international bent butt trolling rod and reels, and two heavy-duty electric reels for deep dropping down 350+ feet. The navigation system has more than 3000 waypoints saved over the years so they can pinpoint these feeding grounds easily as well! Read More

What is mahi mahi in Hitchcock all about?

In the waters off Hitchcock, Texas, anglers can find one of the most vibrant and sought-after gamefish: the mahi-mahi, also known as dorado or dolphin fish. These colorful creatures, adorned with hues of green, blue, and gold, are prized not only for their beauty but also for their acrobatic leaps and fierce fights. Mahi-mahi are prevalent in offshore waters, often congregating near floating debris, weed lines, and offshore structures where they hunt for smaller prey fish. Anglers in Hitchcock eagerly target mahi-mahi for the excitement and challenge they bring to the fishing experience.

During mahi-mahi season in Hitchcock, which typically spans from late spring through early fall, anglers set out to the Gulf of Mexico aboard specialized sportfishing boats in search of these prized gamefish. Trolling with a spread of brightly colored lures or rigged baits is a popular technique used to entice strikes from mahi-mahi. The high-speed trolling approach mimics the movement of fleeing prey, attracting the attention of mahi-mahi and prompting them to strike. Anglers must remain vigilant and attentive to their lines, as mahi-mahi are known for their swift and aggressive strikes once hooked.

Once a mahi-mahi is hooked, anglers are treated to an exhilarating battle characterized by powerful runs and impressive aerial displays. These feisty fish put up a spirited fight, testing the angler's skill and equipment to the limit. Experienced captains and crews play a crucial role in guiding anglers through the fight, providing expert advice and assistance to ensure a successful landing. Whether it's the thrill of the chase or the satisfaction of landing a trophy-sized mahi-mahi, anglers in Hitchcock cherish the opportunity to target these stunning and formidable predators in the deep blue waters offshore.

What are the most popular months to fish for mahi mahi in Hitchcock?

In Hitchcock, Texas, the mahi-mahi season brings excitement and anticipation to offshore anglers as they prepare to target one of the ocean's most vibrant and prized gamefish. Mahi-mahi season typically kicks off in late spring as waters warm and extends through the summer months into early fall. During this time, mahi-mahi migrate closer to the coast, following schools of baitfish and providing anglers with prime opportunities for hookups.

The peak of mahi-mahi season in Hitchcock coincides with the warmer summer months, when these colorful fish are most abundant offshore. Anglers often venture out to the Gulf of Mexico aboard specialized sportfishing boats equipped with trolling gear and experienced crews. Trolling with a spread of brightly colored lures or rigged baits at varying depths is a popular technique used to entice strikes from mahi-mahi. Anglers must maintain a fast trolling speed to mimic the movements of fleeing prey and increase their chances of success.

As the summer months give way to fall, mahi-mahi season in Hitchcock gradually winds down. Cooler temperatures and changing ocean currents prompt mahi-mahi to begin their migration southward, leading to fewer opportunities for anglers to target these prized gamefish. However, dedicated anglers who time their trips carefully can still encounter mahi-mahi well into the autumn months, particularly during periods of favorable weather conditions. Despite the changing seasons, the allure of mahi-mahi season in Hitchcock remains strong, drawing anglers back year after year in search of the ultimate offshore adventure.

What techniques are popular for catching mahi mahi in Hitchcock?

Mahi-mahi fishing in Hitchcock, Texas, requires a mix of strategy, skill, and adaptability to effectively target these vibrant and agile gamefish. One popular technique employed by anglers is high-speed trolling. Anglers trail a spread of brightly colored lures or rigged baits behind the boat while cruising offshore waters. Maintaining a fast trolling speed mimics the movement of fleeing prey, enticing mahi-mahi to strike. Anglers must vary the depth and distance of their lines to cover a wide swath of water and increase their chances of encountering these swift predators.

Another effective technique for mahi-mahi fishing in Hitchcock is live bait fishing. Anglers often deploy live baits such as ballyhoo, mullet, or Spanish sardines rigged with circle hooks and fished from outriggers or downriggers. Live bait presents a natural and enticing target for mahi-mahi, particularly when presented at varying depths to cover the water column effectively. Anglers must remain vigilant and attentive to their baits, as mahi-mahi are known for their swift and aggressive strikes once hooked.

With their combination of speed, agility, and vibrant colors, mahi-mahi offer anglers in Hitchcock an exciting and rewarding fishing experience unlike any other.

What other species are popular in Hitchcock?

While targeting mahi-mahi may be a thrilling pursuit in the waters off Hitchcock, Texas, anglers have a diverse array of other species to pursue for equally exhilarating fishing experiences. One such species is the prized yellowfin tuna, renowned for its strength and endurance. Yellowfin tuna are commonly found in offshore waters, often schooling around oil rigs, deepwater structures, and seamounts where they prey on baitfish and squid. Anglers targeting yellowfin tuna commonly use trolling with skirted lures, chunking with natural baits, or even live bait fishing to entice strikes from these formidable predators.

Another sought-after species in Hitchcock's offshore waters is the powerful wahoo. With its incredible speed and powerful runs, wahoo provide anglers with adrenaline-pumping battles that test both angler and tackle. Wahoo are often found patrolling the deeper offshore waters, where they ambush prey with lightning-fast strikes. For anglers looking to stay closer to shore, Hitchcock offers excellent opportunities for targeting a variety of bottom-dwelling species such as grouper, snapper, and amberjack. These hard-fighting fish can often be found around offshore reefs, wrecks, and oil platforms, where they lurk in search of food. Bottom fishing with live or cut bait is a popular technique for targeting these species, with anglers dropping their baits to the bottom and waiting for a bite. Whether offshore chasing pelagic species like yellowfin tuna and wahoo or bottom fishing for reef dwellers, Hitchcock provides anglers with a diverse and rewarding fishing experience throughout the year.

The guide was not inviting. He never introduced himself and had no concern for our well being. We had two guests who were sea sick and he never showed any concern.
