Fishing report from Kerri C. in Port O'Connor, Texas Book a trip with Captain Kerri here.

Summer has officially started in Port O’ Connor. There are 3 major bay systems in Port O’Connor, west matagorda bay, Espiritu Bay, and San Antonio Bay. Each one has its own characteristics and each present a challenge on finding good fish. Espiritu Bay has been producing solid trout on top water baits in the early morning and plastics such as down south lures. The trout have moved from the mud from the back lakes and sloughs to the sand of the south shore lines and sand bars, as the day gets warmer they move from the flats to the deeper guts and then back to the flats as the evening arrives and the bait moves back onto the flats. The redfish have also been producing very well this summer and can be caught on top water and plastics as well. West matagorda bay has been on fire as of late and the trout have been in an abundance on the sandbars and flats. The bull reds have been epic this year in deeper waters from bird island all the way into the jetties early in the morning and have been caught on jigs. San Antonio Bay has been a little slower on producing fish but they are starting to turn on too. Each bay has oyster reefs, sand, and grass pockets which all present a different challenge on how to fish and be successful on getting a limit of trout and reds. As the we get into July and august the fish are going to move into deeper water to stay cool so we always have to be aware of water temperature and tidal movement. Also the months of July and august are great for going to the surf because we hardly get any wind in those months which keeps the surf calm and there are some big trout and reds that hang out on the gulf side of the barrier islands.

The redfish bite is still steady. They are moving into the inlets to spawn as the mullet are coming in. Flounder bite is still good and the tarpon are on the beach. Target the pogy pods on or near the beach with live finger mullet. Also lady fish, blues and bonita mixed in.

Fishing has been really good here lately with the calmer winds and cleaner water. Nearshore casting at Spanish Mackerel has been steady with a mix of albacore for a fun fighting surprise. Inshore with the right tides, you can find scattered speckled trout and solid redfish, and starting Sept 1 we can finally keep the elusive flounder. Shrimp are all over the backwaters, cast netting enough for dinner to add to the plate!

Fishing report from Chris O. in Little River, South Carolina Book a trip with Captain Chris here.

On the nearshore reefs there’s been a good flounder and Spanish bite. Which should continue into September. The flounder have been biting mullet, pogies, and baby croakers in the 3-7”range using a Carolina rig around the barges and APCs. the Spanish have been biting Spoons and mackerel trees either trolling the mackerel tree with a number one planer or casting gold or silver spoons. You can also chum with live mullet to get the Spanish fired up then live line a mullet on a number 4 treble with 3-4” of wire. Around the jetties there has been some trout redfish flounder and Spanish . Most of the trout have been caught on live shrimp floating down along the rocks anywhere from 5 to 10 foot down. You can catch some of the redfish using the slip corks with live shrimp or Just off the rocks and around the channel there’s been some bull redfish you can use cut bait (blue fish, pogies, mullet) or live pogies on a Carolina rig (2-3oz weight with 12”-16” 40lb fluorocarbon leader with a 8/0 circle hook. This bull redfish bite should only get better moving into September/October. The flounder have been tight to the rocks and hanging around any bottom structure. Fishing the outside of the jetties when the water is cleanest with a 1/4 ounce jig head with a finger mullet has been the best. If you start seeing an area with Spanish jumping and chasing mullet try anchoring in that area and start throwing live mullet around the boat once you start seeing the Spanish around the boat pitch a mullet on a number 4 treble with 2-3” of wire or any top water bait and they should hammer it!

Everything fishing wise is starting to come together in a big way. The inshore fishing has steadily improved with Fluke up to 7 pounds Seabass up to 4 pounds. Offshore fishing has started to explode... Yellow fin blue fin bigeye are all there for the taking yesterday we had a 77 pound wahoo. It looks like going into September is going to be out-of-Control.

The water us finally warming up to where is should be this time of the year. We are starting to get better fluke action on the reefs and wrecks in the 40-80' range. There are good numbers of sea bass around too, but mostly on the short side. 1-4# blues have invaded the Inshore lumps and can be taken on small metals or trolling. There have even been some king mackerel taken while trolling. We had one launch right in front of the boat the other day. There are schools of bait pretty much everywhere you look, so it's just a matter of time, or finding the right one, to get on the fish. It should only get better from here on. Tight Lines!"

The winds are not the problem, it is the salinity in the water that is causing it to be difficult to find fish, salinity is 3 x's what it should be due to the lack of fresh water.

Fishing report from Ruben G. in Port Isabel, Texas Book a trip with Captain Ruben here.

Fishing for flounder has been good in some spots with live shrimp and jigging a curly tail soft plastic around pilings near the channel drop offs. Reds and Trout are good drifting the sandy water on windy days using a popping cork with live shrimp. On days with calm winds reds can be caught in green water with top waters and soft plastics.

Fishing has continued to remain consistent. Trout have been great early along deeper grass lines and rock beds throwing croaker and shrimp. Reds are showing up in the flats in big schools and are getting ready to make their spawn run. Flounder have been on channel edges in big numbers. Drum have also been showing up around spoil islands. They have been easy to spot. Dead shrimp on a 1/16 to 1/8 ounce jig head has shown great results.

Fishing is good for flounder inside and out It's good and giving anglers the best Bang for their buck although we are in a moratorium and can't keep the fish and proper Care is demonstrated and delivered to the fish as do the fish as we have to put them back catch catching Spanish macro on the beach on spoon and plainer combo's introductional trolling methods for anglers who need to put a big meal together some larger Spanish are binding on live dates which have been slow trolled Some trout and red fish have been caught but they have almost been far in between lately remember between lately as we are in the dog days of summer fill on down for a great day of reef and Spanish macro fishing that is very good and it's a staple for us in the summertime.

Wilmington has been offering a good topwater speckled trout bite early in the morning. Plenty of flounder as September starts our keeper season. Plenty of grey trout and redfish as well. In Oriental, the bull reds are starting to fire up. Morning trips with popping corks and evening bottom fishing with bait have been producing some big bull redfish.

Fishing report from Frank B. in Stone Harbor, New Jersey Book a trip with Captain Frank here.

The fishing has been pretty off out front on the inshore reefs. We continue to have upwelling thanks to the constant southerly winds. The water temperature is fluctuating constantly from the upper 50s to the low 70s. The fish can't get acclimated and just turn off. So, we have been targeting the smaller fluke and little sea bass in the back bays. The beaches are providing more consistent action with kingfish, spot, and a variety of other species. There are occasionally larger sharks and rays in the mix. The back bays at night are loaded with peanut bunker and spearing. Small blues are constantly harassing them. There are some stripers around here and there. The bite is definitely not what is should be though. Things would bust wide open if the water would just get stable.
