What techniques are popular for catching amberjack in Dauphin Island?

Amberjack fishing in Dauphin Island requires specialized techniques and equipment due to the strength and fighting prowess of these formidable game fish. Patience is key when live bait fishing for amberjack, as these fish can be discerning feeders and may require some coaxing to entice a strike.

Trolling is also a popular method for targeting amberjack around Dauphin Island, particularly when fish are scattered over a wide area or actively feeding on the surface. Anglers troll a spread of lures or rigged baits behind a moving boat, covering a large swath of water and enticing strikes from amberjack cruising near the surface or at mid-depths. This method allows anglers to cover more ground and locate productive fishing spots, making it a versatile option for targeting amberjack throughout the year in the waters surrounding Dauphin Island.

We Loved Captain Shawn! He was patient, helpful and very engaging. If the fish weren’t biting in one spot he’d move to another. We caught a variety of species and was knowledgeable about every one we caught . He realized how excited I was to see the dolphins so he got them to jump in our waves from the boat. Every time we saw them he was sure to try to get them to interact with us. His boat was very nice and clean, you could tell he loved his boat. IT WAS AWESOME! We plan on a second trip with him to do offshore fishing next. We enjoyed his inshore trip and hospitality! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! One more thing… although we didn’t bring our 10 year old son I definitely would not hesitate to take him out on a Captain Shawn’s boat! He’s a family man, I could tell he would do great with younger passengers as well.

We went out with Captain Mike the day before the Fourth Of July 2023. The boat was clean and loaded with all the needed supplies. We had great weather and a fun experience. Captain Mike gave great instructions as my wife and I were fishing with our three boys ages 13, 8, & 5. Shane was a great deckhand, keeping rods baited and our fish iced. I would recommend Captain Mike to anyone looking to go out and have a fun day on the gulf catching snapper, beeliners, and other reef fish.

We went out on Tuesday which was originally scheduled for Monday but the weather didn’t cooperate and we were thankful that captain Seth suggested going out the next day. The weather was perfect and he put us on the snapper. We had a big group of people with a couple of first timers and everyone caught their limit and and had a great time. I would highly recommend this charter to anyone wanting to have a great time and load up on fish.

Thomas B. with Seth W. of Orange Beach, Alabama

Excellent experience! Highly recommended we all got sea sickness and the captain and deck hand were so kind. We still caught our limit and the captain also referred us to a restaurant that would cook our fresh catch!

Capt. Shawn took our group of 4 Inland Fishing June 13th, 2023. He knows the area well, has a nice boat and provides Top of the Line Gear. Our 4 Hour trip went by way to fast as we all had a great time. The region we fished received hard rain the night before, so the Fishing started slow but picked up mid-morning and he put us on Redfish and Trout. I recommend and will definitely book another fishing charter with Capt. Shawn our next trip to the Gulf Shores area. Capt. Shawn guides both Offshore and Inland. Our next trip will be the 6 Hour Off Shore charter for Red Snapper.

Kevin P. with Shawn S. of Bon Secour, Alabama

Great trip- Right on time, easy to work with! Caught a handful of Spanish Mackerel on the way out, and while the fishing overall was a little slow, Steve got us on some fish and we had a blast- His deckhand was amazing and didn't stop working until he was done cleaning our fish back at the dock- Would definitely go again!~!!

Mark B. with Stephen C. of Gulf Shores, Alabama
