Anglers are drawn to the challenge of targeting these powerful fish, which often require heavy tackle and strong fishing techniques to land.

One popular method for catching gag grouper in Holmes Beach is bottom fishing with live or cut bait. Anglers commonly use live baitfish such as pinfish, grunts, or mullet, as well as cut bait such as squid or mullet strips, to entice strikes from gag grouper. These baits are presented near the bottom, where gag grouper are known to lurk around structure in search of prey. Anglers must employ strong and sturdy tackle to handle the powerful runs and dives of gag grouper, as well as finesse to coax them away from structure and into the boat.

Another effective technique for targeting gag grouper in Holmes Beach is trolling with artificial lures or rigged baits. Anglers may troll along reefs, ledges, or drop-offs where gag grouper are known to inhabit, covering large areas of water in search of feeding fish. Popular lures for trolling include diving plugs, swimbaits, and skirted baits, which mimic the appearance and movement of baitfish and can entice strikes from hungry gag grouper. Trolling allows anglers to explore different depths and locations to locate active fish, providing a dynamic and exciting fishing experience.

What are the most popular months to fish for gag grouper fishing in Holmes Beach?

In Holmes Beach, gag grouper seasons typically revolve around state and federal regulations, which aim to ensure sustainable fishing practices and protect the population of this sought-after species. Gag grouper season in federal waters, which extend beyond state boundaries, usually opens from July 1st to December 31st each year. This season allows anglers the opportunity to target gag grouper in deeper offshore waters where these fish are abundant. However, it's essential for anglers to stay informed about any changes to regulations, as they may vary depending on factors such as stock assessments and conservation efforts.

In state waters, which extend up to 9 nautical miles off the coast of Holmes Beach, gag grouper season typically aligns with federal regulations. However, there may be variations in season dates or bag limits depending on specific state regulations. State authorities often work in conjunction with federal agencies to manage gag grouper populations effectively and maintain sustainable fishing practices. Anglers planning to target gag grouper in state waters should consult local regulations and fisheries management authorities to ensure compliance with current rules and regulations.

While the open season for gag grouper provides anglers with ample opportunities to pursue these prized fish, it's essential to practice responsible fishing techniques and adhere to catch limits to help preserve the population for future generations. Additionally, anglers should be mindful of any seasonal closures or restricted areas designated to protect spawning aggregations or sensitive habitats. By staying informed and following regulations, anglers in Holmes Beach can enjoy successful gag grouper fishing while contributing to the long-term sustainability of this valuable resource.

Scott was great. He licked us up on time. He accommodated our last minute request. He was extremely knowledgeable about fishing and went out of his way to make sure we all caught fish. Especially my son who is 12. Was funny too. Had a great time on the sea with him. Felt safe even with a kid on board. That was important for us.

My son and I did a 6 hour off shore fishing charter with Capt. Mike and had a fantastic time. Mike got in touch with us immediately after we booked. His communication was clear, concise and accurate. He was in touch again the day before our trip to see if we had any questions and asked if we had any particular type of fish that we wanted to fish for. On the day of the trip, we arrived 15 minutes before our scheduled departure. Mike already had the boat in the water and the fishing poles rigged and ready. After a brief safety discussion and orientation to the boat, we took off. Mike took us 40 miles off shore before we started fishing. Using his electronics on the boat and past experience, he expertly moved us around and it didn’t take long before my son and I caught some nice size Grouper. Mike kept the fish we caught on ice until we got back to the dock. There, he quickly filleted our fish and had zip lock bags for us to put them in. One thing I couldn’t help but notice was Mike seemed to be having as much fun as we were. I would highly recommend Mike for your next fishing charter.
