Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

What is Inshore fishing in Homestead all about?

Inshore fishing in Homestead, Florida, offers anglers a unique and rewarding experience in the diverse coastal habitats of South Florida. Located near the Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys, Homestead provides access to a variety of inshore fishing opportunities, including tidal creeks, mangrove shorelines, and expansive flats. These ecosystems support a rich diversity of fish species year-round, making it a sought-after destination for both local anglers and visitors looking to explore the region's pristine waters.

One of the primary targets for inshore anglers in Homestead is snook, prized for their powerful fights and cunning behavior. These predatory fish are often found lurking near mangrove edges, bridges, and flats where they ambush passing baitfish like mullet and shrimp. Anglers use live bait such as pilchards or shrimp, as well as artificial lures like jigs or swimbaits, to entice snook into striking. Patience and strategic casting are key, as snook can be selective and elusive.

Redfish, or red drum, are another popular catch in Homestead's inshore waters. These copper-colored fish thrive in shallow flats, oyster beds, and around submerged structure where they feed on crabs, shrimp, and small fish. Anglers typically target redfish using live bait such as shrimp or mullet, as well as artificial lures like spoons or soft plastics. Techniques include sight fishing in clear waters or casting near mangrove shorelines, requiring precision and finesse to successfully hook these hard-fighting fish.

Speckled trout, known locally as "specks," are also abundant in Homestead's inshore waters and provide anglers with thrilling fishing opportunities. These silver-bodied fish with distinct spots prefer deeper channels, grassy flats, and around submerged structure where they hunt shrimp and small baitfish. Anglers use a variety of techniques such as drifting with live shrimp under popping corks, or casting with artificial lures like jigs or topwater plugs, to attract speckled trout. Known for their aggressive strikes and willingness to take both live and artificial baits, speckled trout offer anglers a challenging and rewarding fishing experience in the scenic and diverse inshore waters of Homestead, Florida.

What are the most popular months to go Inshore fishing in Homestead?

Inshore fishing seasons in Homestead, Florida, offer anglers a varied and dynamic experience throughout the year, shaped by seasonal changes in water temperature, fish behavior, and migratory patterns. The fishing year typically begins in spring, as temperatures warm and fish become more active after the cooler winter months. This time is ideal for targeting species like snook, redfish, and speckled trout, which start moving into shallower waters such as flats, mangrove shorelines, and estuaries. Anglers often use live bait such as shrimp or mullet, as well as artificial lures like jigs and soft plastics, to entice bites from these prized inshore species.

Summer marks the peak of inshore fishing season in Homestead, with warmer waters attracting a diverse range of fish to coastal areas. Redfish and snook are particularly abundant during this time, seeking cooler depths near channels, docks, and bridges where they feed aggressively on baitfish and crustaceans. Anglers adjust their strategies to the summer conditions, often fishing early mornings or late evenings when fish are most active and temperatures are more favorable. Summer also presents opportunities to target larger species like tarpon and jack crevalle, which migrate through the area in pursuit of abundant prey.

Fall brings another productive period for inshore fishing in Homestead as temperatures begin to cool and fish continue their feeding frenzy. Redfish, snook, and speckled trout remain key targets during this season, often congregating in shallower waters and around structure such as mangroves and oyster beds. Anglers may also encounter migrating schools of mullet and other baitfish, attracting predatory species and providing plenty of action. Fall in Homestead offers anglers optimal conditions to enjoy successful fishing trips and memorable catches in the scenic and diverse inshore waters of South Florida.

Captain Andrew. Aka drew. What can i say. From the very start he communicated with us he wanted to make sure we had time to cast net some great bait and he did. Hardest working guide ive ever seen. And im 60 so seen quite a few. Andrew put us on fish all day long. Incredibly knowledgea le about the entire area and fishing area. My wrist and right arm are a bit sore from catching so many fish. The big target today for me was Snook. He put us on them. I lost 2 in slot snook in the mangrove roots probably 28 to 30. But caught at leat 5 in the 24to 27 inch range and another 8 in the 14 to 22 or so. Always busy always catchin and fi ding them. We also caught some big jack cravele big ones. Make your arm hurt. Lol. Plenty of mangrove snapper a couple barracuda and a bull shark. All day. Fun day. Now im tired. Took my wife to just hang out. She loved it. Great fishing trip with this man. Mike and Tami. Chris is an awesome guide. Real Miami native who knows the bay better than anyone. He really cares about fishing and he is not on a hard "trip ending" time. Chris also suggested some local Miami restaurants and took us there after our trip. A certified damn good guide in my book.

Hey Anglers, Born and raised here in Florida I feel like i know quite a bit about fishing, but our fishing guide Andrew was as good as they come. Hands down the best guide I have ever been out on the water with down here in the Keys. We pulled off a Keys slam... Tarpon, Snook, and Redfish. What a great day on the water. Thank Andrew for treating us to an amazing day. Tight lines, Frank

I highly recommend Anthony if you want to fish out of Key Largo. He was obviously respected by the other guides we met while we were fishing and demonstrated a great knowledge of the local water and the best places to find different species of fish. Additionally, he had excellent equipment that was in very good shape. This includes his boat. Even more important was his willingness to conduct the type of trip I wanted for my grandchildren's first fishing trip. He is also extremely affable and fun to be with. If I go back to the Keys, I won't look for a different guide. I will just call Anthony and ask, "What's biting?".

Incredible fishing! I’ve never had the experience where I cast my line and within 5 seconds I get a strike. Over and over, it was constant cast and strike. Caught 20 fish in the first hour. Not only an expert guide for fishing, but Patrick is a really nice person to hang out with. Super chill to talk sports and fishing, but was cool and professional. He also recommended an awesome place for lunch where they grilled our catch! Top notch, highest recommendation possible!

Our trip with Anthony totally exceeded our expectations. From the moment we met him we knew we were in for a wonderful experience. His equipment is all first class and his knowledge of the back bay is extensive. After putting us on many fish and constant action, we were able to catch a beautiful snook for the dinner table and a fish that was a trophy fish of a lifetime. He then suggested a local restaurant and suggestions on how to prepare our catch. The ambiance, service and food preparation was the best meal of our entire trip. We would highly recommend Captain Anthony and love to spend more time with him whenever possible.

We had the best experience with Andrew. He’s a born and raised in Key Largo local and he put us on a bunch of spots where fish were biting. He was so patient when we got tangled or lost our bait and was just in general super friendly and helpful. You can tell he spends his days on the water because there’s no place he’d rather be. And he also cleaned our fish with an amazing alacrity and gave us excellent recommendations on where we could have it cooked for us by highly acclaimed local chefs. It wasn’t just fishing, Andrew was the whole package.
