What are the best swordfish fishing charters in Key West?

What is swordfish fishing in Key West all about?

Swordfish, renowned for their size, strength, and elusive nature, are a highly prized catch for anglers in Key West, Florida. These majestic pelagic predators can be found in the deep offshore waters of the Gulf Stream, where they roam in search of prey. Swordfish are known for their powerful runs and acrobatic leaps when hooked, making them a favorite target for anglers seeking a thrilling challenge and a prestigious trophy fish.

Fishing for swordfish in Key West typically involves deep dropping baits or lures to depths of several hundred feet, where these fish often dwell during the daytime. Anglers use specialized tackle and rigging, including electric reels and heavy-duty rods, to present baits such as squid, mackerel, or artificial lures at the desired depth. Patience and persistence are key when targeting swordfish, as anglers may spend hours waiting for a bite, but the reward of hooking into one of these powerful fish is well worth the effort.

Swordfish fishing in Key West can be productive year-round, but certain times of the year, such as late spring and summer, are considered peak seasons for targeting these majestic fish. During these months, swordfish migrate through the area in search of food and suitable spawning grounds, providing anglers with ample opportunities to encounter them. Whether fishing from a private boat or charter vessel, anglers in Key West can enjoy the challenge and excitement of pursuing swordfish against the backdrop of the city's stunning coastal scenery.

What are the most popular months to fish for swordfish in Key West?

In Key West, Florida, swordfish fishing seasons are influenced by various factors, including water temperature, weather patterns, and migration patterns of these majestic pelagic predators. Generally, the best time to target swordfish in Key West is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. During this time, swordfish are more active and can be found inhabiting the deep offshore waters of the Gulf Stream, where they roam in search of prey.

Late spring and summer are considered peak seasons for swordfish fishing in Key West, as warming water temperatures stimulate increased feeding activity among these fish. During these months, swordfish migrate through the area in search of food and suitable spawning grounds, providing anglers with ample opportunities to encounter them. Anglers targeting swordfish during this time often deep drop baits or lures to depths of several hundred feet during the daytime, where swordfish are known to dwell.

Fall can also be a productive time for swordfish fishing in Key West, as cooling water temperatures trigger increased feeding activity among these majestic pelagic predators. While swordfish can be caught year-round in Key West, late spring through early fall typically offer the most favorable conditions for targeting these elusive and powerful fish. Whether fishing from a private boat or charter vessel, anglers in Key West can enjoy the challenge and excitement of pursuing swordfish against the backdrop of the city's stunning coastal scenery.

What techniques are popular for catching swordfish in Key West?

Fishing for swordfish in Key West, Florida, requires specialized techniques due to the deep-water habitat and elusive nature of these majestic predators. One popular method is deep dropping, where anglers deploy baits or lures to depths ranging from several hundred to over a thousand feet. This technique often involves using electric reels and heavy-duty tackle to handle the extreme depths and the powerful runs of swordfish. Baits such as squid, mackerel, or artificial lures are presented at the desired depth to entice strikes from swordfish lurking in the depths.

Another effective technique for targeting swordfish in Key West is daytime swordfishing. This method involves deploying baits or lures to depths where swordfish are known to dwell during the daytime hours. Anglers may use specialized rigs and weights to achieve the desired depth, often ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 feet or more. Patience is essential when daytime swordfishing, as anglers may spend hours waiting for a bite, but the reward of hooking into one of these powerful fish is well worth the effort.

Swordfish can also be targeted at night using drifting or trolling techniques. Anglers may deploy rigged baits or lures behind the boat while drifting with the current or trolling at slow speeds. This method allows anglers to cover a larger area of water and explore different depths where swordfish may be actively feeding. Whether deep dropping during the day, drifting or trolling at night, anglers in Key West can enjoy the challenge and excitement of pursuing swordfish against the backdrop of the city's stunning coastal scenery.

What other species are popular in Key West?

In addition to swordfish, Key West, Florida, offers anglers a diverse range of species to target, ensuring an exciting fishing experience for anglers of all skill levels. One popular catch is the mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado. These colorful and highly prized pelagic fish are found in offshore waters near floating debris, weed lines, and temperature breaks, where they feed on small fish and crustaceans. Anglers targeting mahi-mahi often use trolling techniques with brightly colored lures or rigged baits, as well as live bait such as pilchards or squid, to attract strikes from these acrobatic and tasty fish.

Another sought-after species in Key West's waters is the wahoo, known for its speed and powerful runs. Wahoo are often found in offshore waters around weed lines, drop-offs, and underwater structures, where they feed on smaller fish and squid. Anglers targeting wahoo typically use high-speed trolling techniques with lures or rigged baits to entice strikes from these fast-moving predators. Wahoo are prized for their delicious white flesh and are known for their aggressive strikes and blistering runs, making them a favorite among anglers seeking an exhilarating challenge.

In addition to mahi-mahi and wahoo, Key West offers opportunities to target a variety of other species, including tuna, sailfish, and marlin. They nailed it with name! It was truly a Captain Experience and we had the pleasure of going out with Capt Hunter and his mate, Robert. The seas were rough, the sign was shining and the water was splashing. For most, they would have turned tail to head back to shore but the salt air was filled with the giggles of my family as Capt skirted over the waves, flawlessly. We bummed, we bounced, we laughed and we caught some beautiful fish. Capt Hunter was truly the perfect definition of an experienced Captain. He was safe, cautious, full of knowledge and fun! The whole 8 hour trip was worth every penny saved and every memory made. The Colonel (aka the Capt) will 💯 be our go to charter Capt for future trip. Robert, was fun and charming and a very valuable part of the crew. We truly had the best time and would highly recommend them to anyone. The Captain Experiences team goes above and beyond to make sure it’s smooth sailing from the moment you book a charter with them. The communication is second to none with them. Available at all times of the day. Thank you, Gentlemen for a exhilarating experience. You haven’t seen the last of us.

Had a fantastic trip with Captain John in July of 2023. Went for a morning trip on our honeymoon, caught tons of fish, had a lot of fun. John and his first mate were very competent, personable, and provided an excellent experience. The boat was well outfitted, John knew several spots with lots of fish, and gave us more time than we'd paid for. Great experience, will absolutely book again next time we're in the keys.
