What techniques are popular for catching swordfish in Key West?

Fishing for swordfish in Key West, Florida, requires specialized techniques due to the deep-water habitat and elusive nature of these majestic predators. One popular method is deep dropping, where anglers deploy baits or lures to depths ranging from several hundred to over a thousand feet. This technique often involves using electric reels and heavy-duty tackle to handle the extreme depths and the powerful runs of swordfish. Baits such as squid, mackerel, or artificial lures are presented at the desired depth to entice strikes from swordfish lurking in the depths.

This method involves deploying baits or lures to depths where swordfish are known to dwell during the daytime hours. Anglers may use specialized rigs and weights to achieve the desired depth, often ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 feet or more. Patience is essential when daytime swordfishing, as anglers may spend hours waiting for a bite, but the reward of hooking into one of these powerful fish is well worth the effort.

Swordfish can also be targeted at night using drifting or trolling techniques. Anglers may deploy rigged baits or lures behind the boat while drifting with the current or trolling at slow speeds. This method allows anglers to cover a larger area of water and explore different depths where swordfish may be actively feeding. They nailed it with name! It was truly a Captain Experience and we had the pleasure of going out with Capt Hunter and his mate, Robert. The seas were rough, the sign was shining and the water was splashing. For most, they would have turned tail to head back to shore but the salt air was filled with the giggles of my family as Capt skirted over the waves, flawlessly. We bummed, we bounced, we laughed and we caught some beautiful fish. Capt Hunter was truly the perfect definition of an experienced Captain. He was safe, cautious, full of knowledge and fun! The whole 8 hour trip was worth every penny saved and every memory made. The Colonel (aka the Capt) will 💯 be our go to charter Capt for future trip. Robert, was fun and charming and a very valuable part of the crew. We truly had the best time and would highly recommend them to anyone. The Captain Experiences team goes above and beyond to make sure it’s smooth sailing from the moment you book a charter with them. The communication is second to none with them. Available at all times of the day. Thank you, Gentlemen for a exhilarating experience. You haven’t seen the last of us.

Had a fantastic trip with Captain John in July of 2023. Went for a morning trip on our honeymoon, caught tons of fish, had a lot of fun. John and his first mate were very competent, personable, and provided an excellent experience. The boat was well outfitted, John knew several spots with lots of fish, and gave us more time than we'd paid for. Great experience, will absolutely book again next time we're in the keys.

Captain John was awesome! He was super upfront about water conditions and left all the decisions to us. Had a quick backup plan for us since there were 7-9 foot seas offshore. Caught some fish waiting out the weather and then put us on the fish we were after! 10/10 would recommend
