What techniques are popular for inshore fishing in Key West?

Inshore fishing in Key West demands a diverse set of techniques to navigate the varied environments and species that inhabit the shallow waters. One popular and effective technique is flats fishing, where anglers target fish like bonefish and permit in the expansive flats and sandy shallows. This method often involves poling a shallow-draft skiff while standing on a casting platform, allowing for a stealthy approach to sight-fish these elusive species. The challenge lies in presenting the bait or lure with precision to entice a strike from these often-wary fish.

Another prevalent inshore fishing technique in Key West is mangrove fishing. The intricate network of mangroves provides shelter and feeding grounds for species such as redfish and snook. Anglers employ techniques like casting lures or live bait around the mangrove roots, requiring accurate and strategic placement to entice strikes from these ambush predators. The thrill of hooking a redfish in the midst of the mangroves, with the line weaving through the roots, adds an extra layer of excitement to the experience.

Topwater fishing is a thrilling technique that captivates anglers seeking explosive surface strikes. This technique is particularly effective for species like tarpon and snook, especially during low-light conditions or when the water is calm. Anglers employ lures that stay on the water's surface, creating enticing ripples and commotion. The heart-pounding moment when a hungry fish explodes on the surface to take the bait is what makes topwater fishing in Key West a favorite among those looking for an adrenaline-pumping inshore fishing adventure. Whether you prefer the finesse of flats fishing, the strategic approach to mangrove environments, or the excitement of topwater action, Key West's inshore fishing techniques cater to a range of preferences and skill levels.

My families trip with Captain John was awesome. John is a humble, hardworking, easy going, chill, dude and fit right in with our families vibe. He was great with our 5 year old son and answered all of his many fishing questions. John made it clear that between the time of year and conditions that day we would have to really work at it to get anything. That’s exactly what we did and we ended up catching a good amount of fish. Most importantly our 5 year old son, who is obsessed with fishing, had the time of his life and caught fish he’s never seen before. 5 stars, highly recommend. If you have a small group this is the charter to go on!

Hunter and his crew were excellent, it was a first time going lobstering so they made everyone feel very safe and comfortable going over everything in detail and going with us to enure our comfort and saftey. Althugh we did run into some weather they worked very hard to get us on lobsters and work around the weather. The first time we drop in the water there my friend had a lobster right under him within a minute. As weather progressed they even gave us credit since we couldn't stay out the entire time even though it was already a great experience. We will be back again.

Antonio was a fantastic captain and I had a great time with him on our lobster hunt. The boat is very comfortable and Antonio is a GREAT guy! He is very skilled and managed to get our limit of lobsters - making the tour a great choice for a beginner who doesn't yet know the ropes of lobster hunting. After the tour, he also cleaned them and put them in a plastic bag and gave great tips on where to go to get them cooked. Happy to return anytime - THANK you Antonio for the great trip!
