Sportfishing here in Miami Beach is a unique experience unlike any other. Captain Ethan and his crew know the area and know how to make your trip enjoyable and memorable. His sportfishing charters offer plenty of opportunities to catch and keep your fish, if you so desire! Ethan and his crew can even clean your catch and suggest nearby restaurants that will cook it up for you. Charters launch from the Miami Beach Marina and traverse the area between Ft. Lauderdale and Key Largo. However, if the fishing report states a much wider range, Captain Ethan will go as far as 30 miles offshore. His goal is to give you the best sportfishing experience possible—each and every trip. Some of the fish regularly caught on these trips include Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Kingfish, Tuna, Sharks, Blackfin Tuna, and Wahoo. However, an unexpected blue or white Marlin may show its face in the spread, when an experienced angler knows you never know what to expect. While a few fish are catch and release only, you can keep much of what you catch—depending on size. Our crew will keep you up to date with the current information. A day of sport fishing is something you will never forget! All equipment is provided, but you are welcome to use your own if you prefer. Please bring your own snacks and drinks for the trip as well as a tip for the deckhands! Read More

What is cichlid in Miami all about?

Cichlids, a diverse group of freshwater fish known for their vibrant colors and unique behaviors, have found a niche in the aquatic ecosystems of Miami. While many species of cichlids are native to tropical regions around the world, some have established populations in the lakes, canals, and ponds of South Florida, including Miami. These adaptable fish have thrived in the warm, subtropical climate of the region, making them a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts and anglers alike.

In Miami's urban landscape, cichlids can be found in various freshwater habitats, including lakes, canals, and urban ponds. These fish are known for their resilience and ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions, which has contributed to their successful establishment in the region. Anglers often target cichlids using light tackle and small lures or baits, casting near shoreline vegetation or submerged structures where these fish are known to congregate.

Aside from their popularity among anglers, cichlids also play an important ecological role in Miami's freshwater ecosystems. As opportunistic feeders, they help regulate populations of aquatic invertebrates and small fish, contributing to the overall balance of these habitats. Additionally, cichlids have become a beloved fixture in the local aquarium trade, with enthusiasts often keeping them in home aquariums to showcase their striking colors and fascinating behaviors. Overall, cichlids have become an integral part of Miami's aquatic community, adding vibrancy and diversity to its freshwater landscapes.

What are the most popular months to fish for cichlid in Miami?

In Miami's freshwater ecosystems, cichlids are a year-round presence, with their populations remaining relatively stable throughout the seasons. Due to the region's warm and subtropical climate, cichlids can thrive in the area's lakes, canals, and urban ponds regardless of the time of year. However, there are certain factors that may influence the behavior and activity of cichlids in Miami's waters.

One such factor is water temperature, which can fluctuate seasonally in Miami. During the cooler months, cichlids may become less active and seek out warmer, shallower waters where temperatures are more favorable for their metabolism. Conversely, in the warmer months, cichlids may become more active and venture into deeper waters to feed and reproduce. Anglers can adjust their fishing strategies accordingly, targeting cichlids in different areas and depths depending on the time of year.

Another consideration for cichlid fishing in Miami is water level and flow, which can vary seasonally due to factors such as rainfall and water management practices. Changes in water level and flow can affect the distribution and behavior of cichlids, as well as the accessibility of fishing spots. Anglers should stay informed about water conditions and adapt their fishing tactics accordingly to maximize their chances of success throughout the seasons. Overall, while cichlids in Miami may not exhibit distinct seasonal patterns like some other fish species, understanding their behavior and responding to environmental factors can help anglers enjoy successful outings year-round.

What techniques are popular for catching cichlid in Miami?

Cichlid fishing in Miami's freshwater habitats offers anglers a diverse array of techniques to target these colorful and often feisty fish. One popular method is using small lures or baits, such as soft plastics or live worms, to entice cichlids into striking. Anglers often cast near shoreline vegetation, submerged structures, or other areas where cichlids are known to congregate. By varying the presentation and retrieval speed of the lure, anglers can mimic the movements of natural prey and provoke aggressive strikes from cichlids.

Another effective technique for cichlid fishing in Miami is using light tackle and finesse tactics. This approach involves using ultra-light rods and reels, along with light line and small hooks, to target cichlids in shallow or clear water. Anglers may employ techniques such as sight fishing, where they visually spot cichlids and cast directly to them, or finesse presentations, where they use subtle movements to entice cautious fish into biting. Patience and precision are key when employing finesse tactics, as cichlids can be wary and easily spooked in certain conditions.

Drifting or trolling can also be effective techniques for targeting cichlids in Miami's freshwater habitats. Anglers may use small boats or kayaks to drift along shorelines or across productive areas, presenting lures or baits at varying depths and speeds to locate feeding cichlids. Trolling with small crankbaits or spinners can also be productive, especially in larger bodies of water where cichlids may be spread out over a wider area. By experimenting with different techniques and adapting to the conditions of each fishing spot, anglers can enjoy successful outings while targeting cichlids in the diverse freshwater environments of Miami.

What other species are popular in Miami?

While cichlid fishing offers exciting opportunities in Miami's freshwater habitats, anglers have a variety of other species to target for diverse fishing experiences. One popular species among anglers is the largemouth bass, known for its aggressive strikes and powerful fighting abilities. Largemouth bass inhabit the lakes, canals, and ponds of Miami, where they often lurk near structure-rich areas such as submerged vegetation, fallen trees, and rocky outcrops. Anglers use a variety of techniques to target largemouth bass, including casting with artificial lures, flipping and pitching into cover, and using live bait such as shiners or worms. With their voracious appetites and territorial behavior, largemouth bass provide anglers with thrilling battles and the chance to land trophy-sized fish.

Another prized catch in Miami's freshwater ecosystems is the peacock bass, a non-native species that has become established in the region's canals and lakes. Known for their vibrant colors and aggressive nature, peacock bass offer anglers an exhilarating fishing experience. Anglers often target peacock bass by casting with small lures or live bait near shoreline vegetation, bridge pilings, and other structure. With their explosive strikes and acrobatic leaps, peacock bass provide anglers with memorable catches and exciting battles.

In addition to largemouth bass and peacock bass, Miami offers opportunities to catch a variety of other freshwater species, including freshwater snook, freshwater tarpon, catfish, and panfish such as bluegill and crappie. Whether fishing from the shoreline, a boat, or a kayak, anglers can enjoy the thrill of targeting a diverse range of fish species throughout the year. With its rich biodiversity and abundance of fishing opportunities, Miami remains a premier destination for anglers seeking unforgettable experiences in the vibrant freshwater environments of South Florida.

I would highly recommend fishing with George. He is super knowledgeable about the area fishing and he kept me busy catching fish. George is also just a cool dude who was fun to be around during and after fishing. His yacht club cooked up our fish after George cleaned them. It was great! We brought 5 fish in and put at least that many back in the water.

Ozzy and his wife were absolutely wonderful!! They were so friendly and welcoming. They genuinely wanted us to have a good experience and even went over our time slot because Ozzy was determined to have us catch something big before the end, and we did!! The last fish we caught was a huge barracuda! It was truly such a fun experience and you could tell how passionate Ozzy and his wife are about what they do. We would love to come back one day and go fishing with them again!

Hi, the overall trip was good, captain explained a lot. We were expecting another person on board to help with baiting, but the captain did it all. He greeted us at his home went to the boat and took off. The bathroom on the boat definitely needs a deep cleaning. I think the boat was too small boat for as many people we had on board to be fishing. We were always in his way or another person's way it seemed. Wish we could have caught something other than fish bait.
