What are the most popular months to go fishing in Naval Air Station Key West?

Fishing at Naval Air Station Key West is enjoyable year-round, thanks to the region's temperate climate and diverse marine environments. In winter, cooler temperatures bring a slight shift in fishing patterns. This season is excellent for targeting species like sailfish and tuna as they migrate through the area. The cooler waters can also make for productive fishing around the reefs, where species like grouper and snapper are active. It's a great time to book a deep-sea fishing charter, as the winter months often offer calm seas and clear waters.

Spring marks the beginning of a busy fishing season in Key West. As temperatures warm up, various species become more active, making it an ideal time to fish. The spring season is known for its great tarpon fishing, especially in the shallow waters and mangroves. Anglers can also find excellent opportunities for bonefish and permit, which are drawn to the flats and backcountry waters. The combination of mild weather and abundant fish makes spring a popular time for both local and visiting anglers.

Summer brings warmer waters and a shift in fishing conditions. This is the peak season for offshore fishing, with species like mahi-mahi and wahoo being prominent targets. The summer months also offer fantastic opportunities for catching sailfish, which are more abundant during this time. Inshore, the mangroves and flats remain productive for bonefish and permit, although anglers should be prepared for hotter temperatures and the potential for afternoon thunderstorms. Despite the heat, summer fishing in Key West remains rewarding, with numerous opportunities to enjoy the diverse marine life of the area.

What types of fishing are popular in Naval Air Station Key West?

Fishing at Naval Air Station Key West offers a variety of techniques suited to the region's diverse marine environments. Offshore fishing is particularly popular, where anglers use techniques like trolling to target species such as sailfish, mahi-mahi, and tuna. Trolling involves dragging lures or baits behind a moving boat, covering a large area of water to attract predatory fish. This method is effective in the open ocean and allows anglers to find and catch larger fish that are often on the move.

Inshore fishing around Key West focuses on different techniques due to the shallow waters and unique habitats. Fly fishing and light tackle fishing are popular for targeting species like bonefish, permit, and tarpon in the flats and mangroves. Fly fishing uses lightweight rods and artificial flies to mimic small prey, while light tackle fishing involves using smaller, more sensitive equipment to handle the delicate lines and lures required for these species. These methods require skill and precision but offer a rewarding experience in the picturesque surroundings of the Keys.

Another effective technique in the Key West area is bottom fishing, which is often done around reefs and wrecks. Anglers drop weighted lines with baited hooks to the ocean floor to catch species like grouper and snapper. This method can be done from a boat and is well-suited for the abundant reef structures that provide habitat for these bottom-dwelling fish. Bottom fishing is a great way to experience the rich marine ecosystem of the area and enjoy a productive day on the water.

    Trip: Beautiful Backcountry Fishing

  • ★★★★★
Captain Jamie took us out in the early afternoon, and even though we knew the bite was a little slow at this time, we just wanted to get out and enjoy the water around beautiful Key West. He made the most of our four hours; we hit around four spots and even cruised over to the ocean side to try and find the bite that way. In this 4-hour trip, I got a crash course in fly fishing from one of the best. Jamie’s super laid-back, easy to talk to, and knows the area like the back of his hand. We wrapped up the trip with a gorgeous sunset; it was a 10/10 day all around. Even with the slow bite, it was one of the most scenic, educational, and unforgettable trips I’ve ever been on!

Trip: Key West On Light Tackle & Flies

Sean is the man!! We hopped out for an afternoon half day right on the tail end of some weird weather patterns and didn't have high hopes, but Sean relentlessly tried new techniques and locations to get us on some fish. I don't know that I've ever been out with a guide who has moved more or tried more techniques in a 4 hour fishing trip. He knew exactly when to say "this isn't working the fish aren't here, lets move on" which is an underrated skill in a guide. We found the flats empty of the usual suspects (tarpon permit bonefish), but we pivoted and hooked into cero mackerel, mutton snapper, and some barracuda. Sean has been fishing in Key West for 30+ years and won't steer you wrong!
