The most commonly sought after species in Kona are: 1. blue marlin, 2. yellowfin tuna, 3. spearfish, 4. striped marlin, and 5. wahoo.

The most common fishing techniques in Kona are heavy tackle fishing, trolling, and artificial lure fishing but live bait fishing and light tackle fishing are popular as well.

Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

This was our first ever marlin trip and we had an absolutely insane time! We had a marlin bite within 30 mins of leaving the marina which was so crazy for us being from TX. The views of the Big Island with Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea were breathtaking and provided us with lake flat seas by blocking the wind. We ended up going 2/3 on blue marlin with my brother bringing in a 700 pounder. Thanks Capt. and mate Bo, epic times and we'll be back!

Had an awesome time, and definitely once in a lifetime trip! Captain Gaige was very welcoming and helpful and his first mate was also very helpful with my boys and I fishing. The boat is extremely well maintained and cared for, and it sounds like they work hard to make sure it’s up to date with the latest technology to make for a great experience. We were hoping for a fun day, and got just that with our first Blue Marlin and a spearfish as well! Definitely some fun action! I will definitely be scheduling again the next time I make it out!

They were wonderful and I’m looking forward to another day on the ocean with him tomorrow, if it was anything like today, it will be a day to remember

Trip: Kona Big Game Fishing - 31’ Bertram

  • ★★★★★
Capt. Dale and first mate Jack were great. The 31’ Bertram was clean and spacious and ran smooth as can be, and the canopy came in handy on a Sunny day. While the Marlin fishing was slow (listening to the radio, none of the boats in the tournament caught), we couldn’t have had a better time swapping stories with Dale and Jack, downing some Big Island brews, taking in the scenery, and watching whales breach. Hope to do it again soon! -Jonathan with Captain Experiences
