Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. What is jetty fishing in Saint Bernard all about?

Jetty fishing in Saint Bernard Parish offers anglers a prime opportunity to experience the rich fishing heritage of Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Situated where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico, the jetties in Saint Bernard provide a dynamic fishing environment. Anglers flock to these structures to target a variety of species year-round, including speckled trout, redfish, flounder, and sheepshead. The jetties themselves provide stable platforms from which anglers can cast their lines into the tidal currents and eddies created by the river outflow, making it an ideal spot for both novice and seasoned fishermen alike.

One of the key attractions of jetty fishing in Saint Bernard is the diversity of fishing techniques that can be employed. Anglers often use live shrimp, mullet, or crabs as bait to entice fish feeding along the jetties' rocky edges and submerged structures. Additionally, artificial lures such as soft plastics, spoons, and topwater plugs are effective for targeting predatory species like speckled trout and redfish that patrol these waters. Whether fishing from the rocks themselves or from adjacent boats, anglers have ample opportunities to experiment with different techniques and adapt to changing conditions to maximize their catch.

Beyond the thrill of the catch, jetty fishing in Saint Bernard offers a chance to immerse oneself in the local fishing culture and the natural beauty of the area. With picturesque views of the river meeting the sea and abundant wildlife dotting the landscape, anglers can enjoy a serene and rejuvenating fishing experience. Whether it's a leisurely morning spent casting lines or an afternoon chasing trophy fish, jetty fishing in Saint Bernard promises unforgettable moments and the chance to create lasting memories against the backdrop of Louisiana's coastal charm.

What are the most popular months to go jetty fishing in Saint Bernard?

Jetty fishing seasons in Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana, mirror the ebb and flow of coastal life and fish migrations throughout the year. Spring kicks off the fishing calendar with a surge in activity as water temperatures rise and marine life becomes more active. Anglers target species like speckled trout and redfish, which are plentiful near the jetties, as they feed voraciously in preparation for spawning. Spring mornings are often ideal for fishing, with calm waters and abundant opportunities to land prized catches before the summer heat sets in.

Summer in Saint Bernard brings warmer waters and a different set of fishing challenges and opportunities. Early mornings and late evenings remain productive times for anglers, as they target species such as flounder, sheepshead, and black drum that thrive in these coastal waters. The jetties provide a refuge from the heat, offering shaded spots and deeper channels where fish congregate. Anglers often adapt their techniques, using live bait like shrimp or mullet or casting artificial lures to entice strikes from predatory fish patrolling the jetties' edges.

Fall marks a transition period in Saint Bernard, heralding some of the best fishing conditions of the year. As temperatures cool and baitfish migrate, larger predators like bull redfish and migrating speckled trout become more active. The jetties serve as strategic points for anglers to intercept these seasonal movements, offering thrilling opportunities to land trophy-sized catches before winter sets in. Whether casting from the rocks or fishing from nearby boats, fall jetty fishing in Saint Bernard is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, promising exciting action and a chance to savor the beauty of Louisiana's coastal landscapes.

What techniques are popular for jetty fishing in Saint Bernard?

Jetty fishing in Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana, offers anglers a variety of techniques to target different species thriving in these coastal waters. One popular method is bottom fishing with live or cut bait, such as shrimp, mullet, or crab. Anglers typically use Carolina rigs or simple bottom rigs with weights to keep the bait near the seabed where bottom-dwelling species like redfish, flounder, and sheepshead feed. This approach requires patience and finesse in bait presentation to entice strikes from these often cautious fish.

Another effective technique is casting artificial lures to mimic the movement of baitfish or crustaceans. Soft plastic swimbaits, spoons, and topwater lures are commonly used depending on the target species and prevailing conditions. Anglers cast these lures along the edges of the jetties or into channels to attract predatory species like speckled trout and redfish, which frequent these areas in search of prey. Adjusting the retrieval speed and pattern can be crucial in triggering bites and landing a successful catch.

Jigging near the jetty structures is also a popular method, especially for targeting speckled trout and flounder. Vertical jigging with bucktail jigs or soft plastic jigs allows anglers to present their bait at different depths, effectively targeting fish positioned along the jetty walls or in deeper channels. This technique requires skill in detecting subtle strikes and adjusting the jigging action accordingly. Whether fishing solo or with companions, mastering these diverse techniques enhances the thrill and satisfaction of jetty fishing in Saint Bernard, offering anglers the opportunity to engage with the abundant marine life and enjoy the scenic beauty of Louisiana's Gulf Coast.

What species are popular for jetty fishing in Saint Bernard?

Jetty fishing in Saint Bernard Parish offers anglers the opportunity to target a diverse array of species throughout the year. One of the most prized catches is speckled trout, particularly abundant in these waters during spring and fall. These fish are known for their voracious feeding habits near the jetties, making them a favorite among anglers who often use live shrimp, mullet, or artificial lures like soft plastics to entice strikes. Speckled trout provide both a thrilling fight and a delicious reward for those who manage to hook them.

Redfish are another prominent species sought after by jetty anglers in Saint Bernard. These powerful fish patrol the rocky edges and channels near the jetties, feeding on crabs, shrimp, and small baitfish. Anglers typically target redfish using cut bait or live mullet, often employing bottom fishing techniques or casting near submerged structures where these fish are known to congregate. Landing a bull redfish can be a highlight of any fishing excursion, as these fish are renowned for their size and strength.

Flounder also inhabit the waters around Saint Bernard's jetties, particularly the sandy or muddy bottoms where they lie in wait for passing prey. Anglers targeting flounder often use live minnows or shrimp on bottom rigs, or they cast artificial lures such as soft plastics or small jigs along the sandy patches near the jetty walls. Flounder provide a fun challenge due to their subtle bites and flat shape, making them a rewarding catch for those who enjoy a mix of finesse and strategy in their fishing endeavors. Whether casting from the rocks or fishing from a boat nearby, the jetties of Saint Bernard offer an enticing blend of species to pursue, ensuring there's always something new and exciting to discover with each outing.

Captain Chad took my wife and I out for a four hour inshore fishing trip around the Biloxi Bay. We had a great time, and caught a variety of species. Chad is a very knowledgeable local fisherman who caters to all angler levels. We learned so much about the ecosystem around the Biloxi MS gulf coast, and how to use different fishing techniques. Spotted some dolphins too. We left with a cooler full of sheepshead, black drum and southern flounder filets. Thanks again Chad!
