Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay all about?

Jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay offers an exceptional experience for anglers of all skill levels. Located in the Florida Panhandle, this bay provides access to a diverse array of fish species thanks to its rich mix of saltwater and freshwater influences. The jetties create a perfect habitat for fish, making them prime spots for catching redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and sheepshead, among others. The strong tidal currents around the jetties bring in baitfish, which in turn attract larger predatory fish, providing excellent fishing opportunities throughout the year.

Fishing from the jetties in Saint Andrew Bay also allows for a variety of fishing techniques. Anglers can use live bait, such as shrimp and small fish, or opt for artificial lures that mimic the natural prey of the fish. The rocky structure of the jetties provides numerous hiding spots for fish, so casting near these areas often yields successful catches. Additionally, the jetties offer relatively easy access for shore-based anglers, eliminating the need for a boat and making it a convenient spot for a day of fishing.

Aside from the fishing itself, the scenic beauty of Saint Andrew Bay adds to the overall experience. The clear, blue-green waters and the surrounding natural landscapes make for a picturesque backdrop while you wait for a bite. Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor to the area, spending a day jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay is a rewarding way to connect with nature, enjoy the outdoors, and potentially land a memorable catch. The combination of abundant fish, various fishing techniques, and stunning scenery makes it a must-visit spot for any fishing enthusiast.

What are the most popular months to go jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay?

Jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay is a year-round activity, but different seasons bring varying opportunities for catching different species. In the spring, the warming waters attract species such as redfish and speckled trout, which move into the bay to feed and spawn. This is an excellent time for anglers to target these fish using live bait or lures, as they are often found in large schools around the jetties. The spring months also see an increase in flounder activity, making it a productive season for jetty fishing.

Summer continues to provide ample fishing opportunities in Saint Andrew Bay, with species like Spanish mackerel and kingfish becoming more prevalent. The warm water temperatures attract these fast-moving predators, offering exciting fishing action for those casting from the jetties. Additionally, the summer months can bring in tarpon, a prized game fish known for its acrobatic fights. Fishing early in the morning or late in the evening can be particularly effective during the hot summer days, when fish are more active in the cooler parts of the day.

As fall approaches, the fishing remains strong with redfish and speckled trout again becoming prime targets. The cooler temperatures of autumn encourage these species to feed aggressively in preparation for the winter months. Sheepshead also become more active around the jetties during this time, providing a fun challenge for anglers with their sharp teeth and strong fight. Winter, though slower, still offers opportunities to catch fish like redfish and black drum, making Saint Andrew Bay a viable fishing destination even during the colder months. The diverse seasonal patterns ensure that jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay is a rewarding experience year-round.

What techniques are popular for jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay?

Jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay offers a variety of techniques that cater to both novice and experienced anglers. One of the most popular methods is using live bait, such as shrimp, minnows, or crabs. These baits can be presented on a simple bottom rig or suspended under a float, targeting fish species that dwell close to the rocky structure of the jetties. Live bait is particularly effective for catching redfish, speckled trout, and flounder, as it closely mimics the natural prey found in the bay's waters.

Another effective technique for jetty fishing is casting artificial lures. Anglers often use soft plastics, spoons, and jigs to entice fish. Soft plastic lures, such as jerkbaits or paddle tails, can be worked along the bottom or through the water column to attract species like speckled trout and redfish. Spoons and jigs are great for targeting faster-moving predators like Spanish mackerel and bluefish, which are attracted to the flash and movement of these lures. Mastering the retrieval speed and pattern is key to making these lures effective, as it needs to mimic the behavior of the baitfish present in the bay.

Fly fishing is also gaining popularity among jetty anglers in Saint Andrew Bay. Using a fly rod to cast small, lightweight flies can be particularly rewarding when targeting species like redfish and speckled trout. Fly anglers often use streamers and shrimp patterns to replicate the small prey found around the jetties. This method requires a bit more skill and precision, but it offers a unique and challenging way to fish the productive waters of the bay. Whether using live bait, artificial lures, or flies, the diverse range of techniques available makes jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay an exciting and versatile pursuit.

What species are popular for jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay?

When jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay, anglers can target a diverse range of fish species throughout the year. One of the most sought-after fish is the redfish, or red drum, known for its powerful fights and delicious taste. Redfish are prevalent around the jetties, especially during the spring and fall when they move into the bay to feed and spawn. These fish are often found near the rocks and can be caught using live bait like shrimp or crabs, as well as artificial lures that mimic their natural prey.

Speckled trout, another popular target, are abundant in Saint Andrew Bay. These fish are particularly active in the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. Speckled trout are often caught using live bait such as minnows or soft plastic lures that imitate small fish and shrimp. Anglers fishing the jetties can find speckled trout in areas where the water is moving, as these fish tend to congregate around structures where baitfish are plentiful.

Flounder are another excellent species to catch when jetty fishing in Saint Andrew Bay. These flatfish are known for their distinctive appearance and tasty, white flesh. Flounder can be targeted year-round but are most commonly caught in the fall. They are typically found close to the bottom, near the rocky areas of the jetties. Anglers use live bait, such as minnows or small fish, and work their bait slowly along the bottom to entice flounder. In addition to redfish, speckled trout, and flounder, other species like sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, and black drum also provide exciting fishing opportunities, making Saint Andrew Bay a versatile and rewarding location for jetty fishing.

On time , engaging, great pre-trip safety. Got us on fish quickly and provided great assistance for us all but especially my 12 year old grandson on his first deep sea fishing trip. While we had mechanical issues Captain Will remained calm focused and was able to resolve the issue. Great Captain that I would highly recommend for any family wanted a great memorable expereience.

We had a great experience. This was our first time booking with Captain Steve, but our second time fishing off PCB. Steve exceeded our expectations. He made sure our little guy had a memorable time. He was great with our 5 year old and appreciated his love of fishing. In our 3 hours we saw dolphins, jelly fish, and sea turtles. We also caught bonitas, King mackerel, Spanish mackerel, trigger fish, red grouper, red snapper, ruby lips, and remora. Steve fileted the mackerals for us to bring home. We will make sure to book with him next year. Thank you Captain Steve!

Captain Steve was excellent. He moved our fishing location to get better results. He was on time, friendly and knowledgable. He was great with my 2 grandkids, 8 and 10. We didn't catch much edible fish but caught quite a few others - 5 species in total. I would recommend Captain Steve and would choose him again if the occasion arises.
