What is river fishing in New Braunfels all about?

River fishing in New Braunfels offers anglers a picturesque and diverse experience along the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers, both renowned for their scenic beauty and rich aquatic life. The Guadalupe River, in particular, is a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts seeking a tranquil setting amidst the Texas Hill Country. Known for its clear waters and limestone cliffs, the Guadalupe River supports a variety of fish species, including rainbow trout, brown trout, smallmouth bass, and Guadalupe bass. Anglers can enjoy both fly fishing and spin fishing opportunities along different stretches of the river, with access points available for wading or launching kayaks and canoes.

Rainbow trout are a prized catch in the Guadalupe River, especially during the winter months when the river is stocked by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. These fish provide exciting angling opportunities for fly fishermen using nymphs, streamers, and dry flies to mimic the aquatic insects and small fish that rainbow trout feed on. Spin fishermen also target rainbow trout with small spoons, spinners, and artificial baits, focusing on deeper pools and riffles where trout are known to congregate.

During the warmer months, the Guadalupe River is a haven for smallmouth bass and Guadalupe bass, the latter being the state fish of Texas. Anglers can use a variety of techniques such as casting topwater lures, crankbaits, and soft plastics to entice strikes from these bass species in the rocky areas and shaded banks of the river. The Comal River, which flows through downtown New Braunfels, offers a different fishing experience with its crystal-clear waters and opportunities to catch sunfish, largemouth bass, and carp. Whether casting from shore or exploring the rivers by boat, anglers in New Braunfels can enjoy a rewarding fishing adventure surrounded by the natural beauty and serene waters of the Texas Hill Country.

What are the most popular months to go river fishing in New Braunfels?

River fishing seasons in New Braunfels offer anglers diverse opportunities throughout the year, influenced by seasonal changes in weather, water temperature, and fish behavior. Spring heralds the start of an active fishing season as the weather warms up and fish become more active. Species such as rainbow trout and Guadalupe bass are popular targets during this time, particularly in the Guadalupe River. Anglers often use a variety of techniques including fly fishing with nymphs and streamers, as well as spin fishing with small spoons and spinners, to attract strikes from these fish in the river's clear waters. Spring also sees an increase in fish activity as they prepare for spawning, making it an ideal time for anglers to enjoy productive outings on the water.

Summer brings warmer temperatures to New Braunfels, influencing fish behavior and angling strategies. While trout fishing in the Guadalupe River slows down due to higher water temperatures, smallmouth bass and Guadalupe bass become more active. Anglers adjust their techniques, using topwater lures, crankbaits, and soft plastics to target bass in the rocky structures and shaded areas of the river. The Comal River, with its crystal-clear waters, offers opportunities for sunfish and largemouth bass fishing, providing anglers with a different but equally rewarding fishing experience.

Fall ushers in another peak in fishing activity in New Braunfels as temperatures begin to cool and fish resume feeding more actively. Rainbow trout stocking resumes in the Guadalupe River, rejuvenating angler interest in trout fishing. Cooler water temperatures make trout more responsive to flies and lures, presenting anglers with excellent fishing opportunities. Bass fishing remains strong during the fall months, with smallmouth bass and Guadalupe bass actively feeding in preparation for winter. Anglers can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Texas Hill Country during this season while exploring the rivers and enjoying the diverse fishing opportunities that New Braunfels has to offer.

What techniques are popular for river fishing in New Braunfels?

River fishing in New Braunfels offers anglers a variety of types and techniques suited to the diverse fish species found in the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers. Fly fishing is particularly popular, especially on the Guadalupe River, known for its clear waters and trout population. Anglers use lightweight fly rods and a variety of flies such as nymphs, streamers, and dry flies to mimic the natural prey of rainbow trout and brown trout. This method requires precise casting and presentation skills, making it a rewarding challenge for anglers seeking to catch trout in the scenic stretches of the river.

Spin fishing is another effective technique employed by anglers in New Braunfels, suitable for targeting a range of fish species including bass and sunfish. Anglers use spinning rods and reels to cast artificial lures such as crankbaits, spinners, and soft plastics. This versatile method allows anglers to cover different depths and water conditions, adapting their tactics based on the behavior of the fish. Spin fishing is accessible to anglers of all skill levels and provides opportunities to catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and other game fish that inhabit the rocky structures and deeper pools of the rivers.

Bait fishing remains a classic and effective approach for anglers in New Braunfels, particularly when targeting bottom-dwelling species such as catfish and carp. Anglers use natural baits such as worms, shrimp, and cut bait, fishing near structures like bridges, docks, and fallen trees where these fish congregate. Bottom fishing rigs are commonly used to keep the bait near the riverbed, allowing anglers to patiently wait for bites. Whether casting from shore, wading in the shallows, or floating along the rivers in a kayak, the variety of fishing techniques available ensures that anglers can enjoy a rewarding and memorable fishing experience in New Braunfels.

Took my buddy and Tanzania-based guide Dom out with Jake and we had a blast! Jake put us on a number of nice fish. Highlight of the trip was Jake marking a fish with his live scope and Dom and I watching on the livescope as it chased Dom's swimbait and gulped it up! – Jonathan with Captain Experiences

My buddy and I had an awesome time fishing with Kevin and Lee. This was our first time carp fishing and it didn't disappoint. These guys run a great program from setting up a nice camp (with fresh coffee) to cannonball launching multiple rods with their cornmeal balls that carp love. We had numerous bites on a quick trip and landed a giant! Kevin and Lee were first class handling the fish and got some great shots for us. – Jonathan with Captain Experiences

110% book this guy if your ever in the Austin area. This guide knows his stuff. Myself and a couple of teenagers were on fish quick and the catching lasted the entire trip. He knows the spots and the baits. Complete professional when it comes to accommodating and encouraging guests. We fished Lady Bird Lake and easily caught 40 fish in a morning trip. Most of the fish were heavy, no dinks. Step out of a downtown high rise, onto a boat deck, at Lady Bird and slay them with this guy or hit a surrounding Austin area lake if that’s your thing.
