Colder water temperatures this week signaled the start of our winter pattern, and with winter comes cold fronts that push in bait and bring some of the most exciting fishing of the year. Conditions varied throughout the week, with sea states ranging from very calm to around 4-foot seas. Currents also changed daily, from little to no current to a strong north current. On our most productive day, we had a south current moving about 1.5 knots, which helped set up an excellent troll.

The highlights of the week were landing a Sailfish trolling in 120 feet of water, catching
a 20.5 lb King Mackerel on a blue diamond spoon in 170 feet, and an unforgettable encounter with a Dusky Shark that was tagged and released. These are the kinds of catches that make winter one of our favorite times of year to be on the water.

Blackfin Tuna have been showing up more consistently, especially in the afternoons and during cloudy mornings. Most of the Blackfins were caught while trolling dinks and spoons, and this trolling pattern has been steadily improving as water temperatures continue to drop.

Looking ahead, with the full moon approaching, there’s a good chance we’ll start seeing Wahoo show up, either trolling or on live bait, as they typically bite well around this phase. While offshore trolling has been trending upward, bottom fishing on the reef has been slightly challenging, requiring adjustments day to day.

Overall, the combination of colder temperatures and winter cold fronts is setting the stage for an exciting stretch

Tarpon fishing has slowed down due to the colder weather. Sheepshead has been really good. This week will be some of the best shelling of the year with all the high winds.

Despite the cooler water temperatures fish are still feeding. Working the deeper water and then solid concrete structures (outside bridges, spillways, etc) once the sun is up seems to be the best bet

January has been hot and cold! And by that I mean hot fishing despite the cold weather! Most of our fish have been resilient of the colder water temps and still very happy. When the sun is out, so are the fish and that's what makes our winter months fantastic for fishing.

Our wintertime fishery here in Naples, FL is shaping up exactly how it should, with a few added bonuses showing up early. We’ve been following our typical winter pattern of capitalizing on the windows in between passing cold fronts, and it has been paying off in a big way.

Offshore action has been excellent with a wide variety of species in the cooler water. We’ve been blessed with some of the best King Mackerel fishing we’ve seen in years. Chumming them up and throwing artificials has been an absolute blast. These fish are a riot on light tackle, and watching
them sky out of the water on topwater plugs truly never gets old.
The deeper wrecks have been holding their usual winter residents as well, with plenty of Amberjacksto pull on and some Cobia mixed in. On top of that, the snapper bite has been outstanding for those looking to bring home dinner. Big Mangroves, Lane Snapper, and Yellowtails have been common on our offshore trips.
Nearshore, we’ve been treated to an unexpected bonus for January — giant free-swimming Permit. We’ve had shots at some true giants recently, fish we typically don’t see until summertime. This is just the beginning, as the Permit fishery is set to explode over the next month, and we’re anticipating an epic spring and summer with these fish.
There’s also been no shortage of jacks on the nearshore wrecks, providing plenty of hard-pulling action. The nearshore meat bite has been strong as well, with quality Sheepshead fired up in the cooler temps — some of the best table fare around.
Inshore, we’re in full winter mode with cooler water temps. I

Kevin was an amazing guide. He was very knowledgeable and provided easy step by step instruction instructions while fighting 2 - 5 foot lemon sharks in less than 1/2 hour before daylight faded. Both were unkooked boat side with great video and pictures. His boat is clean and organized making it safe and easy to move around the boat while battling a catch of a lifetime for 2 Wisconsinites. Thanks Kevin. See you soon.

My dad and I were able to squeeze in on a charter with Captain Eric fairly last minute which was awesome! He got us both on some sea trout first thing in the morning, lined us up on some tarpon but before I was able to take any shots on the fly rod, we spooked a tarpon and in came the bull sharks. We buzzed over to a different flat where I had shots at both snook and redfish. I didn’t end up making any of my shots with the fly rod but this was also my first saltwater fly fishing experience as well as my first guided trip so it was all pretty new to me. I’m just stoked we were able to get out in the first place. But I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Captain Eric and I certainly wouldn’t turn down another opportunity to have him guide us! He’s quiet but very focused and knowledgeable about the marine life and was able to give me casting tips as well with the fly rods. Thank you again for squeezing us in Eric!
