Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

What techniques are popular for jetty fishing in Fort Walton Beach?

Jetty fishing in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, offers anglers a variety of effective techniques and strategies to target a diverse range of fish species that inhabit the Gulf Coast waters near the jetties. One popular method is bottom fishing, which is particularly effective for species like redfish, flounder, and sheepshead. Anglers typically use Carolina rigs or fishfinder rigs baited with shrimp, squid, or cut bait. This approach involves casting near the rocky structures of the jetties and allowing the bait to settle on or near the seabed, where these bottom-dwelling fish are commonly found feeding on crustaceans and small fish.

Live bait fishing is another favored technique among Fort Walton Beach's jetty anglers, especially for targeting larger game fish such as tarpon, king mackerel, and cobia. Live shrimp, mullet, and menhaden are popular choices, presented either free-lined or with a weighted rig to reach desired depths. Artificial lures play a significant role in jetty fishing in Fort Walton Beach, particularly for species like Spanish mackerel, pompano, and speckled trout. Casting spoons, jigs, and soft plastics allows anglers to cover more water and mimic the movements of small baitfish or shrimp, triggering strikes from active predators. Varying retrieval speeds and techniques can be crucial in matching the fish's feeding behavior and environmental conditions. Whether casting into deeper waters around the jetty's rocky outcrops or working the shallower edges, the versatility of artificial lures makes them a preferred choice for anglers looking to engage in an active and rewarding fishing experience at Fort Walton Beach's jetties.

Captain Colby was an absolute pleasure to fish with. He was waiting on us to arrive-, very personable and put us directly on the fish. Captain Colby took the time to assist my daughters while my wife and I fished, everyone had multiple landings. I have fished on the West, East and Gulf coasts and I would recommend him without hesitation. Fantastic Trip, thank you very much!

Bradley was very good with making these 10-15 year old boys make sure they knew what to do and had a good time of fun. He made sure they each had a rod, baited. Nd could cast it where they needed. For two first time fisherman, they had a blast. The 10 yr old catch the most fish. We got back to the condo, and he told his dad let’s go fishing tomorrow. Thanks for a great first trip, saltwater fishing for theses boys.

If you don’t book with Jayson you shouldn’t even come to Destin. You might as well cancel your entire trip if you don’t book with Jayson. I’d rather spend 4 hours fishing with Jayson than 7 days at the beach because I’d spend those 7 days seeing Jayson crash through the waves catching fish as big as a small child. If it ain’t Jay-son I ain’t gonna pay-son!
