What are the best redfish fishing charters in Key Largo?

What is redfish fishing in Key Largo all about?

In Key Largo, anglers have the opportunity to target the prized redfish, also known as red drum, a species highly regarded for its powerful fights and excellent table fare. Redfish can be found in the shallow flats, grass beds, and mangrove-lined shorelines of the Florida Keys, including the waters surrounding Key Largo. These fish are known for their distinctive coppery-red coloration and characteristic black spots near their tails, making them easily recognizable to anglers. Redfish are voracious predators, feeding on a variety of prey including crabs, shrimp, and small fish, presenting anglers with exciting opportunities for successful catches.

Anglers in Key Largo employ a variety of techniques to target redfish, depending on the habitat and conditions. One popular method is sight-fishing, where anglers pole or drift quietly along the flats and shallow waters, scanning the surface for signs of feeding redfish. Once spotted, anglers make precise casts with bait or lures to entice strikes from these wary fish. Live bait such as shrimp, crabs, or mullet, as well as artificial lures such as soft plastics or spoons, can be effective in enticing redfish to bite.

Redfish fishing in Key Largo is particularly productive during the cooler months, when these fish are more active and abundant in the area's waters. Anglers can target redfish year-round, but spring and fall are considered prime seasons for successful catches. During these times, redfish can be found in shallow waters, feeding voraciously on crustaceans and baitfish. Whether sight-fishing on the flats or casting along mangrove shorelines, anglers in Key Largo have the opportunity to hook into trophy-sized redfish and enjoy an exhilarating fishing experience amidst the stunning natural beauty of the Florida Keys.

What are the most popular months to fish for redfish in Key Largo?

In Key Largo, the redfish fishing season offers anglers various opportunities to target these prized fish throughout the year. Redfish can be caught in Key Largo's waters year-round, but certain seasons present more favorable conditions for successful fishing. Generally, the fall and winter months mark the peak seasons for redfish fishing in Key Largo. As temperatures cool, redfish become more active and abundant in the area's shallow flats, grass beds, and mangrove-lined shorelines, making them easier to locate and target.

During the fall and winter seasons, anglers can expect redfish to be more actively feeding and congregating in the shallows. These fish are known to gather in large schools during this time, providing anglers with excellent opportunities for successful catches. Moreover, the cooler months offer favorable weather conditions, making it more comfortable for anglers to venture out onto the water and enjoy a day of fishing for redfish in Key Largo.

While fall and winter are considered prime seasons for redfish fishing in Key Largo, anglers can still find success targeting these fish during other times of the year. Redfish can be caught year-round, with some anglers reporting success even during the warmer summer months. However, anglers may need to adjust their tactics and target areas with suitable conditions based on seasonal changes in water temperature, weather patterns, and fish behavior. Overall, the redfish fishing season in Key Largo offers anglers ample opportunities to pursue these prized fish and enjoy an exhilarating fishing experience amidst the stunning marine landscapes of the Florida Keys.

What techniques are popular for catching redfish in Key Largo?

In Key Largo, anglers utilize a variety of effective techniques to target redfish, renowned for their powerful fights and excellent table fare. One popular method among anglers is sight-fishing, particularly in the shallow flats, grass beds, and mangrove-lined shorelines where redfish are commonly found. Anglers pole or drift quietly along these areas, scanning the surface for signs of feeding redfish such as tailing or cruising fish. Once spotted, anglers make precise casts with bait or lures to entice strikes from these wary fish. Live bait such as shrimp, crabs, or mullet, as well as artificial lures such as soft plastics or spoons, can be effective in enticing redfish to bite.

Another successful technique for redfish fishing in Key Largo is bottom fishing, particularly around oyster bars, docks, or other structure-rich areas where redfish are known to congregate. Anglers anchor or drift over these spots, presenting live or cut bait on the bottom to entice strikes from redfish. Using light to medium tackle rigs with circle hooks and fluorocarbon leaders, anglers can effectively target redfish while minimizing the risk of getting snagged on structure. Bottom fishing allows anglers to cover a wide area and explore different habitats where redfish may be feeding or resting, providing a versatile and productive fishing approach.

Additionally, anglers in Key Largo can target redfish using a variety of artificial lures and techniques, including topwater lures, jerkbaits, spoons, and soft plastics. Casting these lures along mangrove shorelines, grass beds, or shallow flats can attract the attention of feeding redfish and provoke aggressive strikes. Anglers can experiment with different retrieves and presentations to determine the most effective approach based on the conditions and behavior of the fish. Whether sight-fishing, bottom fishing, or casting artificial lures, anglers in Key Largo have a variety of techniques at their disposal to target redfish and enjoy a rewarding fishing experience in the pristine waters of the Florida Keys.

What other species are popular in Key Largo?

Aside from redfish, Key Largo offers anglers a diverse range of fish species to target, ensuring an exciting and varied fishing experience. One popular catch is the tarpon, known for its impressive size, acrobatic jumps, and formidable fighting abilities. Tarpon can be found in the coastal waters, channels, and flats around Key Largo, particularly during the warmer months. Anglers target tarpon using live bait, lures, or flies, presenting their offerings near bridges, channels, or flats where tarpon are known to migrate and feed. Hooking into a tarpon provides anglers with an exhilarating battle and the chance to land one of the most iconic game fish in the world.

Another sought-after species in Key Largo is the bonefish, revered for its speed, agility, and challenging behavior. Bonefish inhabit the shallow flats and sandy bottoms of the Florida Keys, where they feed on crustaceans, shrimp, and small fish. Anglers often sight-fish for bonefish, scanning the clear waters for signs of feeding fish and making precise casts with bait or flies to entice strikes. These elusive fish provide exciting battles and require finesse to catch, making them a favorite among fly fishermen and light tackle enthusiasts in Key Largo.

Additionally, Key Largo's coastal waters are home to a variety of other prized species, including snapper species such as mangrove snapper and yellowtail snapper, as well as grouper species such as black grouper and gag grouper. Anglers can also target species such as king mackerel, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, and mahi-mahi, among others, depending on the time of year and prevailing conditions. Whether fishing from shore, pier, or boat, anglers in Key Largo have a wealth of opportunities to explore and enjoy the rich diversity of marine life in the waters of the Florida Keys.

From the moment we stepped on the boat, it felt like we’d known Capt. Mike forever. He delivered exactly what he promised — a true backwater experience. First cast of the day? A Goliath Grouper. Moments later, a solid Snook. We had multiple hookups after that, though a few were lost in the structure (totally on us). When the tide shifted, Capt. Mike made quick adjustments and put us right back on the fish. He even gave us the choice to chase trout and reds, but we wanted Snook and Grouper — and he delivered! Per my wife’s request, he took us to see crocodiles and manatees, which absolutely made her day. On the way back, we spent time with a playful pod of bottlenose dolphins — an unforgettable bonus. If you love the idea of feeding tarpon at Robbie’s, just book a trip with Capt. Mike — you can have that same thrilling experience right at the end of your day on the water. A fantastic half-day, lifetime memories with my wife, and the pleasure of fishing with a genuinely great guy. We will absolutely book with Capt. Mike again. Highly recommended!
