Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is nearshore fishing in Little Torch Key all about?

Nearshore fishing in Little Torch Key, Florida, offers anglers an exciting opportunity to target a variety of fish species in the clear and shallow waters of the Florida Keys. Located near the famous flats and reefs of the Keys, Little Torch Key provides access to productive fishing grounds where anglers can find species like bonefish, tarpon, and permit. These species are often targeted using light tackle and fly fishing techniques due to the shallow nature of the water and the stealth required to approach these wary fish.

Bonefish are one of the premier targets for nearshore anglers in Little Torch Key, prized for their speed and elusive nature. These silvery fish are commonly found on shallow flats, where they feed on crustaceans and small baitfish. Anglers often sight fish for bonefish, spotting them cruising in the clear water and presenting small shrimp or crab-patterned flies to entice a bite. Early morning and late afternoon are optimal times to target bonefish when they are more active and feeding in the shallows.

Tarpon are another iconic species for nearshore anglers in Little Torch Key, known for their acrobatic leaps and powerful runs. These silver giants can be found around bridges, channels, and shallow flats, where they migrate during their seasonal movements. Anglers target tarpon using live bait such as mullet or crabs, as well as large flies or lures like swimbaits and plugs. Spring and summer are prime seasons for tarpon fishing in Little Torch Key as they migrate through the Keys in search of warmer waters and abundant food sources. Whether targeting bonefish, tarpon, or other species, Little Torch Key offers anglers a unique and rewarding nearshore fishing experience amidst the picturesque landscapes of the Florida Keys.

What are the most popular months to go nearshore fishing in Little Torch Key?

Little Torch Key, located in the Florida Keys, experiences distinct nearshore fishing seasons that attract anglers seeking a variety of species throughout the year. The winter months from December to February are characterized by cooler temperatures, but this period still offers opportunities to catch species like bonefish, tarpon, and permit. These months are less crowded with tourists, making it a quieter time for anglers to enjoy nearshore fishing in the calm waters around the Keys.

Spring heralds the arrival of warmer temperatures and increased activity among nearshore species in Little Torch Key. This season, from March to May, is particularly known for the migration of tarpon through the Keys. Anglers flock to the area to target these silver giants as they move along the coastline and into the channels and flats. Spring is also a prime time for bonefish and permit fishing, with the warming waters encouraging these species to become more active and accessible in the shallows.

The summer months, spanning from June to August, mark the peak of the nearshore fishing season in Little Torch Key. The warm waters attract a plethora of species, including tarpon, bonefish, permit, and other game fish such as snook and mangrove snapper. Anglers take advantage of the longer daylight hours and calm seas to target these species using a variety of techniques, including fly fishing, light tackle, and live bait. Summer is also a popular time for families and anglers alike to visit Little Torch Key, combining fishing adventures with beach activities and exploring the vibrant marine life that thrives in these waters.

What techniques are popular for nearshore fishing in Little Torch Key?

Nearshore fishing in Little Torch Key, Florida, offers anglers a range of techniques and methods to target a diverse array of species in the shallow waters and reefs surrounding the Keys. One popular technique is flats fishing, where anglers use light tackle or fly fishing gear to target species like bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Flats fishing involves poling or wading across the shallow flats, spotting fish as they move in search of prey. Anglers typically use small shrimp or crab-patterned flies, as well as lightweight jigs or soft plastic baits, to entice bites from these wary and fast-moving species.

Another productive technique in Little Torch Key is fishing around the bridges and channels that connect the Keys. Bridges such as the Seven Mile Bridge provide structure and habitat for a variety of fish species, including tarpon, snook, and mangrove snapper. Anglers often fish from boats or shorelines near these structures, using live bait such as mullet or pilchards, as well as artificial lures like swimbaits and topwater plugs, to target these predators. Techniques involve casting near bridge pilings or drifting baits with the current to attract strikes from fish congregating in these areas.

Reef fishing is also popular in Little Torch Key, where anglers target species such as grouper, snapper, and amberjack around the coral reefs and wreck sites that dot the coastline. Anglers typically anchor near these structures and drop baits or jigs to the bottom, where these bottom-dwelling fish reside. Live bait such as pinfish or squid, as well as cut bait like mullet or ballyhoo, are effective in enticing strikes from these larger predatory fish. Reef fishing requires heavier tackle and rigs to handle the strong currents and structure-holding fish found in these waters, providing anglers with thrilling battles and rewarding catches amidst the vibrant marine ecosystem of the Florida Keys.

We had an amazing time! We had a special interest in Mahi and captain brad and his first mate made it happen. It was great, they made us feel super comfortable and confident. We were able to score Mackerel, Yellowtail and we latched on 3 Mahi’s at the very very last second! Super lucky. Brad and his first mate made it happen! We were able to leave with 2 mackerels and 2 Mahi Mahi’s! Thank you! You won’t regret booking with them. Special experience.

My families trip with Captain John was awesome. John is a humble, hardworking, easy going, chill, dude and fit right in with our families vibe. He was great with our 5 year old son and answered all of his many fishing questions. John made it clear that between the time of year and conditions that day we would have to really work at it to get anything. That’s exactly what we did and we ended up catching a good amount of fish. Most importantly our 5 year old son, who is obsessed with fishing, had the time of his life and caught fish he’s never seen before. 5 stars, highly recommend. If you have a small group this is the charter to go on!

We had an absolutely amazing time deep sea fishing with Captain Anthony! He is a fun and knowledgeable fisherman with LOTS of experience and great stories (ask him about how he’d dive for lobsters to impress his dates). He does all the work but lets you learn and participate as much or as little as you want. We knew we had an expert when we heard the radio chatter of all the other guides complaining that nothing was biting, while we pulled in six (only four mahi in pic). The other two were a small tuna and a ~32” barracuda). We highly recommend Kilo Whiskey Charter & Captain Anthony!
