Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What are the most popular months to fish for triggerfish fishing in St. Augustine?

Triggerfish are typically in season during specific times of the year, with regulations set by fisheries management authorities to ensure sustainable fishing practices and protect the population. These seasonal closures are designed to coincide with triggerfish spawning periods and allow the fish to reproduce undisturbed, contributing to healthy and robust populations for future generations of anglers to enjoy.

The triggerfish season in St. Augustine typically aligns with warmer months when these fish are most active and abundant in the region's offshore waters. As spring arrives and water temperatures rise, triggerfish become more active, moving into shallower areas and congregating around reef structures to feed and spawn. This seasonal pattern provides anglers with prime opportunities to target triggerfish using a variety of techniques, from bottom fishing with baited rigs to jigging around submerged wrecks and artificial reefs.

While triggerfish seasons in St. Augustine may vary slightly from year to year based on regulatory changes and environmental factors, local anglers eagerly await the opening of these seasons to pursue these prized reef dwellers. What techniques are popular for catching triggerfish in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, Florida, anglers employ a variety of techniques to target triggerfish, prized for their challenging fights and delicious flesh. One popular method is bottom fishing around the numerous reef structures that dot the offshore waters of the region. Anglers use heavy tackle and baited rigs to present offerings like shrimp, squid, or cut bait to triggerfish congregating near rocky outcroppings, wrecks, and artificial reefs. This technique requires patience and precision as fishermen carefully position their baits and wait for the telltale tug of a triggerfish on the line.

Another effective technique for triggerfish fishing in St. Augustine is vertical jigging. This method involves dropping specialized jigs or rigs vertically through the water column, enticing triggerfish to strike as the bait flutters enticingly in front of them. Vertical jigging allows anglers to cover a wide range of depths quickly and efficiently, making it an ideal choice for targeting these reef dwellers in varying conditions. With the right jigging technique and a bit of luck, anglers can experience the thrill of hooking into a feisty triggerfish at any moment.

Trolling can also be a productive technique for triggerfish fishing in St. Augustine, particularly when targeting fish near the surface or along the edges of reef structures. Anglers troll a variety of lures or bait behind their boats at varying speeds, covering a large area of water as they search for actively feeding fish. This method allows fishermen to cover ground quickly and locate schools of triggerfish, offering an exhilarating opportunity to hook into these colorful and hard-fighting reef dwellers while enjoying the scenic beauty of the offshore waters of St. Augustine.

What other species are popular in St. Augustine?

While triggerfish may be a sought-after species in St. Augustine's waters, anglers have a diverse range of other fish to target throughout the year. One popular catch is the red snapper, known for its vibrant coloration and delicious taste. Found near offshore reefs, wrecks, and ledges, red snapper offer anglers a challenging fight and a rewarding culinary experience. With their strict regulations and limited seasons, catching red snapper in St. Augustine requires careful planning and adherence to conservation guidelines, but the effort is often well worth it for anglers seeking a memorable fishing excursion.

Another prized species in St. Augustine is the mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado. These dazzlingly colored pelagic fish are commonly found in offshore waters, where they congregate around floating debris, weed lines, and temperature breaks. Mahi-mahi provide anglers with exciting battles, known for their acrobatic leaps and high-speed runs. Whether trolling with colorful lures or casting with live bait, targeting mahi-mahi in St. Augustine offers anglers the chance to experience the thrill of hooking into these powerful and majestic gamefish.

For those looking to reel in a true trophy catch, St. Augustine's waters are also home to a variety of billfish species, including sailfish, marlin, and swordfish. These apex predators roam the offshore waters in search of prey, offering anglers the ultimate challenge in big-game fishing. Wow!! IF YOU WANT TO GO SEA FISHING YOU HAVE TO GO WITH CAPTAIN NICK!!! So we turned up to a pretty chilly and windy meeting spot, thinking why hasn’t this been postponed to another day, surely we can’t got out in this weather. How wrong we were. Captain Nick arrived early assured us we would be fine and we would be fishing the river and not going out to the ocean, but he was pretty sure we would still catch some fish. When we started fishing within the 1st half hour we had caught 2 huge fish , the rest of the afternoon was spent tracking fish and catching them. Captain Nick and his mate answered all questions that were asked of them, their knowledge of the area and their love of fishing was clearly evident. They made this fishing trip, one that a 12 year old kid from England will remember forever. Thankyou Captain Nick for the experience

We went out with Captain Chris and had an amazing experience! Our party consisted of four people with a grandmother and three teenage grandchildren. With Chris’ knowledge and skills, each of us were able to catch at least one shark. He prepared the one we kept and we were able to have it cooked at a nearby restaurant for lunch!

We had an unbelievable time with Captain James and I can't wait to fish with him again. Was in the area for a wedding and was looking to head offshore so we booked with James. He kept in touch leading up to our trip and let us know the kings were running. We headed out through the St. Mary's jetties and set up on the troll after catching some baitfish on the buoys. There were a couple other boats out and no one seemed to get a bite, the kings just weren't biting. From there, Capt. James took us to one of his snapper spots and we reeled em in on every drop. Everyone caught fish and James was super patient helping one buddy who was offshore for the first time. James was a blast to fish with and was super knowledgeable about the area and its history. His center console split the chop like butter. Will be back! - Jonathan with Captain Experiences

Our 6-hour in-shore fishing trip with Captain Billy was such a great time! He's definitely done his fair share of charters and we were lucky enough to catch quite a few fish. He followed all sizing restrictions and made sure we were on fish at every spot we went to. After, he showed us the proper way to clean fish. We will most definitely do another charter with him in the future.
