trip description for Offshore Fishing in Jacksonville

Fishing the offshore waters of North East Florida can be world class. Lots of options depending on the time of year and water temps. We usually break it down into two categories trolling and bottom fishing. Trolling we prefer using live bait and 30 lb. conventional tackle. Targeting king mackerel, cobia, bonita, barracuda, sailfish, mahi and sometimes even blackfin tuna. This all depends on conditions and the time of year we fish. Usually we start the day by throwing a cast net for live bait or stopping on a piece of structure to jig up some minnows using a sabibki rig. Once the baitwells are loaded its off to the fishing grounds. All depending on where the bite has been best is where we start to fish. Sometimes it can be a few miles out and other days we need to run 10-12 miles offshore. Bottom fishing can be wide open off of our coast as well targeting red snapper, vermillion snapper, black seabass, amberjack, grey grouper, cobia and triggerfish just to name a handful. The live bait can work very well on the bottom as well fresh cut bait and frozen bait. Until you have felt the fight of a mule snapper or a big amberjack it's hard to express in words how hard they pull. We use heavy conventional tackle (80lb.) as well as big spinning rods for the fishing these waters. Read More

What techniques are popular for catching triggerfish in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, Florida, anglers employ a variety of techniques to target triggerfish, prized for their challenging fights and delicious flesh. One popular method is bottom fishing around the numerous reef structures that dot the offshore waters of the region. Anglers use heavy tackle and baited rigs to present offerings like shrimp, squid, or cut bait to triggerfish congregating near rocky outcroppings, wrecks, and artificial reefs. This technique requires patience and precision as fishermen carefully position their baits and wait for the telltale tug of a triggerfish on the line.

Another effective technique for triggerfish fishing in St. Augustine is vertical jigging. Vertical jigging allows anglers to cover a wide range of depths quickly and efficiently, making it an ideal choice for targeting these reef dwellers in varying conditions. With the right jigging technique and a bit of luck, anglers can experience the thrill of hooking into a feisty triggerfish at any moment.

Trolling can also be a productive technique for triggerfish fishing in St. Augustine, particularly when targeting fish near the surface or along the edges of reef structures. Our 6-hour in-shore fishing trip with Captain Billy was such a great time! He's definitely done his fair share of charters and we were lucky enough to catch quite a few fish. He followed all sizing restrictions and made sure we were on fish at every spot we went to. After, he showed us the proper way to clean fish. We will most definitely do another charter with him in the future.
