Everything to Know About Booking a Cabo San Lucas wahoo fishing charter

What are the best wahoo fishing charters in Cabo San Lucas?

What is wahoo fishing in Cabo San Lucas all about?

In Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, wahoo are a prized gamefish sought after by anglers for their lightning-fast strikes and powerful runs. These sleek and voracious predators inhabit the offshore waters of the Baja Peninsula, offering anglers thrilling battles and memorable catches. Wahoo are known for their distinctively long, slender bodies and razor-sharp teeth, making them a formidable opponent for even the most experienced fishermen.

One effective technique for targeting wahoo in Cabo San Lucas is high-speed trolling with colorful lures or rigged baits. Anglers venture offshore aboard specialized sportfishing boats equipped with powerful engines and top-of-the-line tackle, covering expansive areas of water in search of wahoo hotspots. Skilled captains and crew members utilize their knowledge of ocean currents, temperature breaks, and underwater structures to pinpoint the best spots for wahoo fishing. By trolling at high speeds, often exceeding 10 knots, anglers create a commotion that attracts the attention of these fast-moving predators, increasing their chances of enticing a strike.

Furthermore, wahoo are commonly found near underwater structures such as seamounts, ridges, and drop-offs, where they lie in wait to ambush passing prey. Anglers can also target wahoo by jigging with metal jigs or vertical speed jigs in these areas, presenting an enticing offering that mimics the movements of fleeing baitfish. With their powerful runs and fierce strikes, hooking into a wahoo provides anglers in Cabo San Lucas with an exhilarating fishing experience and the chance to reel in a prized trophy from the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

What are the most popular months to fish for wahoo in Cabo San Lucas?

In Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, wahoo stand as prized targets for anglers seeking thrilling offshore adventures. Renowned for their lightning-fast strikes and blistering runs, wahoo offer anglers an exhilarating challenge and the chance to reel in a trophy-sized catch. Anglers flock to Cabo San Lucas year-round in pursuit of these elusive gamefish, drawn by the excitement and adrenaline of wahoo fishing.

High-speed trolling is a favored technique among anglers targeting wahoo in Cabo San Lucas. Specialized sportfishing boats equipped with top-notch gear and experienced crew members venture offshore, cruising at speeds exceeding 10 knots while dragging colorful lures or rigged baits behind them. Skilled captains rely on their knowledge of underwater structures, temperature breaks, and current patterns to navigate to prime wahoo hotspots. By creating a commotion on the water's surface, anglers attract the attention of these fast-moving predators, increasing their chances of enticing a strike.

Moreover, wahoo are often found near underwater structures such as seamounts, ridges, and drop-offs, where they lurk in wait for passing prey. Anglers in Cabo San Lucas can also target wahoo by jigging with metal jigs or vertical speed jigs in these areas, mimicking the frantic movements of fleeing baitfish. With their powerful bursts of speed and fierce strikes, hooking into a wahoo promises anglers an adrenaline-pumping fight and the opportunity to land a prized trophy from the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

What techniques are popular for catching wahoo in Cabo San Lucas?

Fishing for wahoo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, demands a combination of skill, strategy, and specialized techniques to successfully target these fast-moving predators. One highly effective method is high-speed trolling, where anglers venture offshore aboard sportfishing boats equipped with powerful engines and top-of-the-line tackle. Trolling at speeds exceeding 10 knots, anglers drag a spread of colorful lures or rigged baits behind the boat, creating a commotion on the water's surface that attracts the attention of wahoo. Skilled captains rely on their knowledge of underwater structures, temperature breaks, and current patterns to navigate to prime wahoo hotspots, maximizing the chances of enticing a strike.

Additionally, anglers targeting wahoo in Cabo San Lucas often focus their efforts near underwater structures such as seamounts, ridges, and drop-offs, where these predators are known to congregate. Jigging with metal jigs or vertical speed jigs can be a productive technique in these areas, as anglers mimic the frantic movements of fleeing baitfish to entice wahoo to strike. By dropping their jigs to the desired depth and employing a rapid retrieve, anglers create an irresistible presentation that triggers aggressive strikes from wahoo.

Furthermore, anglers can increase their chances of success by employing a variety of trolling strategies, including spreader bars, daisy chains, and bird teasers, to attract wahoo in Cabo San Lucas. These techniques involve deploying an array of artificial lures or rigged baits in strategic patterns behind the boat, simulating a school of baitfish or a fleeing prey item. By experimenting with different lure colors, sizes, and configurations, anglers can dial in on the preferences of wahoo and optimize their chances of landing a prized catch. With their lightning-fast strikes and powerful runs, wahoo fishing in Cabo San Lucas promises anglers an exhilarating and rewarding offshore experience.

In addition to targeting wahoo, anglers exploring the waters of Cabo San Lucas have a diverse array of species to pursue, ensuring an exciting and varied fishing experience. Striped marlin are abundant in the offshore waters surrounding Cabo San Lucas, particularly during the warmer months, offering anglers thrilling battles and the opportunity to reel in a trophy-sized catch. What can I say, that day the water was very ruff and we caught two Wahoo fish one 60 pounds and one 50. The crew was amazing from the food to helping us with moving about the boat too recovering the fish. Definitely my best fishing trip experience I have had. Will definitely go back and charter with Blue sky.

In that I run several hundred charters a year myself I'm pretty sure I understand the difference between a good and a bad day on the water. I went out with Captain Poncho three days in a row and I will summarize all three in this one write up. First of all, these guys can and do catch fish. That they do it without particularly good equipment and virtually no electronics (one boat had a VHF and a GPS/no transducer, another , the panga, didn't have either.), says to me that the fishing is pretty good! On day one my wife was out and we stayed in a lee so she wouldn't get sea sick. The sierra mackerel bite was pretty much non stop and we had our limit in pretty short order. We tried jigging in deeper water but no one was home but on the way back towards the fleet we saw some bait and stopped off for a crazy jack crevalle bite that would have lasted far longer than my arms could take! They were blasting surface plugs in spectacular fashion but would have hit anything you threw at them, they were quite aggressive, We also got a few small skipjacks and small grouper (released) as well. Made Mackerel cevechi for dinner. On day 2 my wife stayed at the apartment and Poncho and I went out in a panga. He used land ranges to put up on a shelf in about 150 ft of water to the east of the marina by about 10 miles. It was pretty windy and rough for that little boat but there were a couple of crazy commercial handliners in the same area in an even smaller boat! We had a few bonito and then Captain Poncho jigged a nice red snapper before I nailed a 55 pound AJ on a Squidtrex with a 25 pound flurocarbon leader. AJ Steaks for dinner was a lot like swordfish. Day 3 Captain Poncho had the center console again and my wife was with us. We went to "the mackerel area" again and we were getting them quite steadily even though there was no live bait available and we were using frozen stuff. It didn't seem to matter to the fish. While drifting for the mackerel I jigged a soft plastic near the bottom (50-60 ft) and got several large sculpins, a couple of triggerfish and a bonito. Kept only the bonito for fish tacos. All in all it was a great trip well taken care of by good people. My only suggestion would be to bring good tackle if you have it.
