Everything to Know About Booking a Fishing Charter in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo Fishing Charters Overview

Cabo San Lucas is located at the southern end of the Baja Peninsula, which means it has access to both the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific. The arid and prickly landscape falls into the deep blue ocean creating a stark contrast between land and water. This is a unique and diverse place to wet a line with a variety of sport fish for anglers to target. Just past the waves and rocks, the ocean floor drops off reaching depths of over 1,200 feet. No other sport fishing destination offers opportunities to target sailfish, marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, roosterfish, and the other various pelagic species within a short boat ride from the dock. Fishing charters in Cabo are typically run on sport fishing boats equipped with all the amenities you need to stay comfortable on a long trip.

Whether you're on family vacation, or traveling specifically for the unmatched fishing, our Damn Good Guides have you covered when fishing in Cabo. The charter fleet in Cabo is extensive, with plenty of modern boats equipped with all the bells and whistles needed to create the perfect fishing experience.

What months are best for fishing in Cabo?

In Cabo San Lucas, the optimal months for fishing largely depend on the species targeted. However, generally speaking, the peak fishing season extends from late spring through early fall, typically from May to October. During this period, warm water currents attract a diverse range of fish species to the area, including marlin, dorado (also known as mahi-mahi), tuna, wahoo, and sailfish.

Marlin fishing, in particular, is renowned in Cabo San Lucas, with both blue marlin and striped marlin being prevalent in local waters. Blue marlin, in particular, are most commonly found during the summer months, while striped marlin tend to be more abundant in the fall.

Dorado, known for their acrobatic jumps and vibrant colors, are also plentiful during the summer months, peaking in abundance around July and August. Tuna and wahoo are often found in good numbers during this time as well, providing anglers with additional opportunities for offshore fishing.

It's worth noting that while the summer months are generally considered prime fishing season in Cabo San Lucas, fishing can still be productive during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. Additionally, winter months offer excellent inshore fishing opportunities for species such as roosterfish, snapper, and grouper, although offshore fishing for larger pelagic species may be less consistent during this time.

Overall, anglers visiting Cabo San Lucas can expect a rewarding fishing experience throughout much of the year, with peak seasons offering the best chances for targeting specific species.

What are the most popular types of fishing techniques in Cabo?

In Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, anglers have a variety of fishing techniques to choose from, with each method catering to different preferences and target species. The most popular types of fishing in the Cabo area include:

1. **Deep Sea Fishing**: Deep sea fishing in Cabo San Lucas involves venturing offshore to deeper waters where large pelagic species like marlin, tuna, and dorado roam. Anglers can expect to troll with artificial lures or natural baits, often employing techniques such as live baiting or kite fishing to entice bites from these prized gamefish.

2. **Inshore Fishing**: Inshore fishing is another popular option in Cabo San Lucas, particularly during the winter months when cooler water temperatures bring inshore species closer to shore. Anglers can target species such as roosterfish, snapper, grouper, and sierra mackerel using a variety of techniques including casting with lures, bottom fishing with bait, and fly fishing.

3. **Fly Fishing**: Fly fishing enthusiasts visiting Cabo San Lucas can enjoy targeting a variety of species both inshore and offshore. Inshore fly fishing opportunities include casting for roosterfish, snapper, and jacks along rocky coastlines and sandy beaches. Offshore, fly anglers can target species like dorado, tuna, and billfish by casting large flies or using traditional fly fishing techniques from a drifting boat.

Overall, the diverse range of fishing options available in Cabo San Lucas caters to anglers of all skill levels and preferences, making it a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts worldwide.

What are the most popular fish to catch in Cabo?

In Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, anglers have the opportunity to target a wide variety of fish species, ranging from small inshore species to large pelagic gamefish. Among the most popular fish to catch in Cabo, the following species stand out:

1. **Marlin**: Cabo San Lucas is renowned for its marlin fishing, with both blue marlin and striped marlin being prevalent in local waters. Blue marlin, known for their incredible size and strength, are particularly sought after by anglers during the summer months. Striped marlin are also abundant, especially in the fall, providing anglers with thrilling opportunities for offshore sportfishing.

2. **Dorado (Mahi-Mahi)**: Dorado, also known as mahi-mahi or dolphin fish, are colorful and acrobatic gamefish commonly found in the waters around Cabo San Lucas. These fish are most abundant during the summer months, particularly around July and August, and provide exciting action for anglers targeting them offshore. Dorado are prized not only for their fighting ability but also for their delicious taste.

3. **Tuna**: Tuna fishing is another popular pursuit in Cabo San Lucas, with both yellowfin tuna and occasionally other species like bigeye tuna and skipjack tuna being targeted by anglers. These powerful fish are found in offshore waters and are known for their fast-paced, hard-fighting action. Tuna fishing peaks during the summer months but can be productive throughout the year.

4. **Sailfish**: Sailfish are highly prized by anglers for their incredible speed and agility, making them a sought-after species in Cabo San Lucas. These billfish are commonly found in offshore waters, particularly during the summer months, offering thrilling opportunities for anglers targeting them with trolling techniques.

5. **Wahoo**: Wahoo are known for their speed and powerful strikes, making them a favorite target among offshore anglers in Cabo San Lucas. These fish are most abundant during the warmer months and are often found around offshore structure and current lines. Wahoo fishing typically involves high-speed trolling with lures to entice these fast-swimming predators.

These are just a few examples of the many fish species that anglers can target in Cabo San Lucas. Whether fishing inshore or offshore, the waters around Cabo offer diverse opportunities for anglers of all skill levels to pursue their favorite gamefish.

How far out do you fish in Cabo?

Fishing in Cabo San Lucas can take you various distances offshore, depending on the type of fishing you are doing and the species you are targeting.

For inshore fishing, anglers typically stay within a few miles of the coastline. This type of fishing often targets species like roosterfish, snapper, and jack crevalle, which are found in the shallower waters near the shore and around rocky structures and reefs.

Offshore or deep-sea fishing in Cabo San Lucas often involves heading 10 to 30 miles or more out into the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Cortez. This is where the larger pelagic species like marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi), and wahoo are commonly found. The exact distance can vary based on where the fish are biting, as these species can migrate and follow bait schools.

In Cabo, the famous Gordo Banks, located about 8 to 10 miles offshore, and the Golden Gate and Jaime Banks, around 20 to 30 miles out, are popular spots for targeting big game fish. Anglers may also venture to other offshore banks and fishing grounds where conditions are favorable for finding specific species.

Ultimately, how far out you fish in Cabo will depend on the type of fishing trip you choose, the target species, and the advice of local captains and guides who are familiar with the current fishing conditions and hotspots.

In that I run several hundred charters a year myself I'm pretty sure I understand the difference between a good and a bad day on the water. I went out with Captain Poncho three days in a row and I will summarize all three in this one write up. First of all, these guys can and do catch fish. That they do it without particularly good equipment and virtually no electronics (one boat had a VHF and a GPS/no transducer, another , the panga, didn't have either.), says to me that the fishing is pretty good! On day one my wife was out and we stayed in a lee so she wouldn't get sea sick. The sierra mackerel bite was pretty much non stop and we had our limit in pretty short order. We tried jigging in deeper water but no one was home but on the way back towards the fleet we saw some bait and stopped off for a crazy jack crevalle bite that would have lasted far longer than my arms could take! They were blasting surface plugs in spectacular fashion but would have hit anything you threw at them, they were quite aggressive, We also got a few small skipjacks and small grouper (released) as well. Made Mackerel cevechi for dinner. On day 2 my wife stayed at the apartment and Poncho and I went out in a panga. He used land ranges to put up on a shelf in about 150 ft of water to the east of the marina by about 10 miles. It was pretty windy and rough for that little boat but there were a couple of crazy commercial handliners in the same area in an even smaller boat! We had a few bonito and then Captain Poncho jigged a nice red snapper before I nailed a 55 pound AJ on a Squidtrex with a 25 pound flurocarbon leader. AJ Steaks for dinner was a lot like swordfish. Day 3 Captain Poncho had the center console again and my wife was with us. We went to "the mackerel area" again and we were getting them quite steadily even though there was no live bait available and we were using frozen stuff. It didn't seem to matter to the fish. While drifting for the mackerel I jigged a soft plastic near the bottom (50-60 ft) and got several large sculpins, a couple of triggerfish and a bonito. Kept only the bonito for fish tacos. All in all it was a great trip well taken care of by good people. My only suggestion would be to bring good tackle if you have it.
