Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

What is inshore fishing in Mexico all about?

Inshore fishing in Mexico offers anglers a diverse and rewarding experience, thanks to the country’s extensive coastline and varied marine habitats. The inshore waters, which lie closer to the shore than nearshore areas, are rich with opportunities to catch species such as snapper, grouper, and seabass. These fish thrive in the shallow waters around reefs, mangroves, and estuaries, making inshore fishing a popular choice for those looking to enjoy a day on the water without venturing too far offshore.

One of the key attractions of inshore fishing in Mexico is the abundance of snapper species, including the red snapper and cubera snapper. These fish are commonly targeted using techniques such as bottom fishing with baited hooks or jigs. The structure-rich environment of Mexico's inshore waters provides ideal habitats for snapper, which are drawn to the reefs and rocky outcrops. Anglers can expect to find a range of sizes and varieties, offering both challenging and rewarding catches.

In addition to snapper, inshore fishing in Mexico also presents opportunities to catch other species like grouper and seabass. Grouper, known for their strong fighting abilities, are often found around submerged structures and rocky areas. Seabass, on the other hand, are commonly targeted in estuarine and coastal waters. Overall, inshore fishing in Mexico provides a vibrant and varied fishing experience, with ample opportunities to catch a range of species in some of the country’s most scenic and productive coastal environments.

What are the most popular months to go inshore fishing in Mexico?

In Mexico, the fishing seasons for nearshore and inshore areas vary, offering different opportunities throughout the year. The dry season, spanning from December to April, is often considered the best time for nearshore and inshore fishing. During these months, weather conditions are generally calm with clear skies and stable seas, making it ideal for fishing. This season sees high activity from popular species such as roosterfish, snapper, and grouper, as the conditions support excellent visibility and more predictable fishing patterns.

The rainy season, from May to October, brings a shift in fishing conditions. Increased rainfall and storms can result in rougher seas and murkier waters, which may affect fishing activities. However, this period also brings a surge in nutrient-rich runoff into the inshore and nearshore waters, creating favorable conditions for fish populations. Species like snapper and grouper can be found in abundance as they are drawn to the enriched waters, providing anglers with opportunities despite the sometimes challenging weather conditions.

Transitional periods between the dry and rainy seasons, typically in April and October, offer a blend of favorable conditions. These months often feature stable weather with productive fishing opportunities as the environment adjusts to the changing seasons. Anglers can benefit from the improved fishing conditions and the abundance of various species during these times. Overall, Mexico's nearshore and inshore fishing remains dynamic throughout the year, with each season presenting its unique set of challenges and rewards.

What techniques are popular for inshore fishing in Mexico?

Inshore fishing in Mexico offers a range of techniques suited to the diverse coastal environments found along the country’s shores. One common approach is casting, which involves using spinning or baitcasting gear to throw lures or live bait into shallow waters. This method is particularly effective around estuaries, mangroves, and coastal flats where species like snook, tarpon, and redfish are prevalent. Casting allows anglers to target fish that are feeding near the surface or around structures, providing an exciting and interactive fishing experience.

Another popular technique is fly fishing, especially in the clear waters of Mexico’s coastal flats and lagoons. Fly fishing is well-suited for targeting species such as bonefish, permit, and tarpon, which are often found in shallow, sandy areas. Anglers use specialized fly rods and lightweight flies that mimic the natural prey of these fish. The technique requires skill and precision to present the fly in a way that entices these wary species, making it a challenging yet rewarding method for inshore fishing.

Bottom fishing is also a widely used technique in Mexico's inshore waters. Anglers use weighted rigs with baited hooks to reach the ocean floor and target species like snapper, grouper, and various bottom-dwelling fish. This method is effective in areas with rocky or sandy bottoms and can be particularly productive in deeper inshore waters. Bottom fishing provides the opportunity to catch a variety of species that inhabit the seafloor, contributing to the diverse fishing experiences available in Mexico's inshore environments.

What species are popular for inshore fishing in Mexico?

Inshore fishing in Mexico provides opportunities to target a diverse array of species, each offering a unique challenge for anglers. One popular species is the snook, known for its strong fighting ability and elusive nature. Snook are often found in estuaries, mangroves, and along the shorelines where they hunt for baitfish. They are particularly active around structures like docks and fallen trees. Anglers typically use live bait or lures to entice snook, making them a rewarding catch for those seeking a dynamic fishing experience.

Another sought-after species in Mexico's inshore waters is the tarpon. Renowned for its impressive size and powerful jumps, tarpon are a prized target for many anglers. They are commonly found in shallow coastal areas, including lagoons and estuaries, where they feed on smaller fish and crustaceans. Tarpon fishing often involves using live bait or artificial lures, and the fight with these fish is both thrilling and challenging due to their size and strength.

Additionally, the redfish, or red drum, is a popular species for inshore fishing in Mexico. Redfish are commonly found in shallow coastal waters and are known for their distinctive copper-bronze color and spots on their tails. They are often targeted using live bait, such as shrimp or small fish, and can also be caught with soft plastics or jigs. Redfish are not only fun to catch but also prized for their excellent table quality, making them a favorite among inshore anglers. Each of these species offers unique fishing opportunities and contributes to the rich diversity of inshore fishing in Mexico.

Ariel and Alexis were amazing captains. Ariel is completely bilingual and has so much experience fishing for 17 years in PV but also all over the world. He was super adaptive — he worked with us to do a lot of different types of fishing (we trolled, we jigged) and all in we caught almost 40 fish with just two of us!! He also gave us an opportunity to add on a trip to Yelapa where they cooked our fresh fish, and it was not only delicious but such a unique experience. Ariel was super communicative and flexible, too. Would highly highly recommend Ariel to anyone who wants to catch a lot of fish, learn about the area and have an amazing time out on the water.

Trip: Cancun Inshore Trip - 25' Argos

I’ve always wanted to catch a tarpon on the fly. It’s been on my bucket list for years, so when we planned our trip to Cancun, I look for an opportunity after booking the trip I was obviously excited to get the chance to fill one of the things on my bucket list, however, when I didn’t plan on, was getting very sick, just a few hours before Orlando, my guide was picking me up. As bad as I felt, I went and waited in the lobby for him to arrive. He had to go through a lot of trouble to get through security, but when I met him, he was all smiles. As we rode through the city to his boat I didn’t say a word, because I felt so ill, and after loading the boat and headed out under the water, it was only a matter of moments before he put me on fish, in my weakened state, I could barely throw the fly. However, he kept pointing out fish after fish, and after a few times resting, I finally filled that bucket list. Orlando was so patient with me and very generous. Not only was he an excellent guide he was a very, very good guy. I hope one day I can go back and fish with him again when I feel better Orlando worked very hard to get me on fish , and if I felt better, I’m sure I would’ve caught several more. We did catch more than that one but because I was so sick I laid in the bottom of the boat mostly. It wouldn’t have mattered if we didn’t catch fish I think I would’ve enjoyed spending the time on the water with Orlando. he genuinely wants you to catch fish. In my second state, he couldn’t tell how excited I was but I could sure tell how excited he was. Thanks again Orlando!! Tight lines!!!

    Trip: Fly Fishing Cancun

I highly recommend Orlando. The communication before the trip was great and he went the extra miles (literally) to pick me and drop me off at my hotel so I didn't have to mess around with early morning taxi or Uber. Fishing was tough but we got some baby tarpon on fly and when conditions weren't suitable for fly rod we switches to spinning rod and caught more. Also got to see some remote backwater and the resident crocodiles. Made you think twice before putting hand in water to retrieve a snagged fly!
