What is lake fishing in Frankfort all about?

Lake fishing in Frankfort, Michigan, is as relaxing as it is rewarding. Nestled on the edge of Crystal Lake and just a stone’s throw from the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, Frankfort offers a unique blend of freshwater fishing with a touch of Northern charm. The clear, pristine waters of Crystal Lake are home to an abundance of species, including bass, pike, and panfish. Whether you’re casting from the shore or out in a boat, the peaceful atmosphere and stunning scenery make for a perfect fishing getaway. There's something special about the stillness of the water in the early morning hours, with the sun rising over the trees and the promise of a great day ahead.

Spring and summer are the sweet spots for lake fishing in Frankfort, especially when the fish are most active. The warmer temperatures bring the bass and pike closer to shore, making for some seriously exciting catches. Crystal Lake’s crystal-clear waters give you a unique advantage as you can actually see the fish lurking below, making every cast feel like an adventure. Whether you’re targeting smallmouth bass or chasing the elusive northern pike, the fishing here never disappoints. The long summer days offer plenty of time to explore different spots around the lake, from the deeper coves to the open waters. And with the natural beauty of the surrounding forests and rolling hills, each trip out on the water feels like an escape into the wild.

As the seasons change, fall brings a more tranquil kind of fishing to Frankfort, with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. The fish might be less active, but they’re still there—often in the deeper waters, where the big bass and pike like to hang out. The fall colors around Crystal Lake create a stunning backdrop for a day of peaceful fishing, where you can slow down, enjoy the quiet, and wait for that perfect bite. Whether you’re fishing from a kayak or a classic rowboat, the vibe in Frankfort’s lakes during the fall is calm, collected, and rewarding in its own right. It’s a time to reflect on the season’s catches and savor the serenity of being out on the water as the world around you changes.

What are the most popular months to go lake fishing in Frankfort?

The lake fishing season in Frankfort, Michigan, kicks off in the spring when the thawed waters of Crystal Lake start to warm up, bringing fish to life after the long winter months. This is the time when the smallmouth bass begin to get active, moving into the shallows to feed and spawn. The air is crisp, and the mornings are still quiet, making for perfect fishing conditions. As the water warms and the days get longer, you'll find that both the fishing and the scenery come alive. The peacefulness of early spring fishing, combined with the quiet beauty of the lake surrounded by forested hills, makes it a prime time to get out on the water and cast your line.

As summer rolls in, Frankfort’s lake fishing season shifts into high gear. The waters of Crystal Lake warm up, and the fish get even more active, especially the bass, pike, and bluegill. This is when the lake’s true potential comes alive, and you’ll find anglers casting their lines from boats, kayaks, and even from the shore. Whether you're trolling for pike or chasing after bass in the deeper waters, the fishing here offers a little something for everyone. The longer daylight hours mean you can fish well into the evening, casting under the glow of the setting sun with the perfect lake breeze keeping you cool. Summer is when Frankfort becomes the perfect escape, offering endless opportunities for a solid catch in tranquil surroundings.

When fall arrives, the fishing in Frankfort takes on a more subdued pace, but it’s no less rewarding. The cooler temperatures bring the fish into deeper waters, and while the bite may slow down, it’s still there for the patient angler. The surrounding forests start to change colors, offering a vibrant backdrop for your day on the water. Fall fishing in Frankfort is about slowing down and appreciating the season’s last hurrah before the cold sets in. The quiet moments on the lake, the cooler air, and the steady pull of a big fish make fall the perfect time to reflect on the year’s catches and enjoy the serenity of Crystal Lake in all its autumn glory.

What techniques are popular for lake fishing in Frankfort?

When it comes to lake fishing in Frankfort, Michigan, the clear, deep waters of Crystal Lake and nearby spots are a playground for anglers looking to explore different techniques. One of the go-to methods here is trolling. Whether you’re after trout, walleye, or even the occasional smallmouth bass, trolling allows you to cover a lot of water and test different depths. You’ll be cruising the lake with your boat, dragging lures or live bait through the water, watching for that telltale tug. The beauty of trolling in Frankfort is that it gives you a shot at various species while taking in the picturesque scenery along the shoreline. Plus, with the wide variety of fish, you never know what might hit next, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

For those who enjoy a more hands-on approach, casting is the way to go. Frankfort’s lakes offer plenty of shoreline and structure, making it ideal for targeting fish like largemouth bass or northern pike. By casting from the shore or from a boat, you can work through rocky points, submerged vegetation, or even drop-offs where these fish love to hang out. Spinnerbaits, jigs, and topwater lures are all effective tools here, and every cast brings a new possibility. Bass, especially, are aggressive, and when they strike, it’s like a sudden explosion on the water. It’s the kind of fishing that keeps you dialed in, constantly adjusting your technique and location to find the perfect spot.

If you're looking to slow things down a bit, bottom fishing is a solid choice in Frankfort’s lakes. The deeper waters of Crystal Lake are home to a variety of species that hang out near the lake’s bottom, including lake trout and panfish. By dropping a weighted rig with bait to the depths, you can target fish that prefer staying closer to the lakebed. While it might require a little more patience than trolling or casting, bottom fishing offers a rewarding challenge when you finally reel in a solid lake trout or the steady pull of a jumbo perch. Whether you’re trolling along the water’s surface or patiently working the bottom, lake fishing in Frankfort provides a diverse range of techniques, ensuring that every trip on the water holds the promise of something new and exciting.

What species are popular for lake fishing in Frankfort?

Lake fishing in Frankfort, Michigan, offers anglers a diverse array of species, each bringing its own brand of excitement to the water. One of the top targets here is the elusive lake trout, which thrives in the deep, cool waters of Crystal Lake. These fish are known for their powerful runs and their ability to test an angler’s patience. Lake trout aren’t always easy to hook, but when you get one on the line, you’ll feel the pull. They’re an iconic catch in these parts, and reeling in a big lake trout feels like a true triumph. Whether you’re trolling or bottom fishing, targeting these deep-dwelling beauties is a challenge that will keep you coming back.

If you’re looking for something with a little more action near the surface, the largemouth bass in Frankfort’s lakes are the way to go. Bass are aggressive feeders and are always ready to strike, making them a thrill to catch. Whether you’re casting a topwater lure along the shoreline or working a deeper point with a jig, the fight is always exciting when a bass takes the bait. Frankfort’s lakes have plenty of cover—like submerged logs and weed beds—where bass love to hang out, so the key is to find those spots and put your lure in the right place. With their strength and determination, largemouth bass are a constant source of excitement for anyone casting from the boat or the shore.

But the fun doesn’t stop with the big hitters. Frankfort’s lakes are also home to a variety of panfish species, including perch, bluegill, and crappie. These fish may be smaller, but they’re perfect for a laid-back day of fishing. Whether you’re fishing with kids or just looking to catch a mess of fish for a shore lunch, these species are abundant and eager to bite. They’re great for practicing your technique or for those days when you want to relax and enjoy the rhythm of casting and reeling. Panfish are plentiful in Frankfort, making them a perfect complement to the bigger catches, and their bite will keep you on your toes throughout the day. Whether you’re after a trophy lake trout or a fun-filled day of perch fishing, Frankfort has it all.

The trip with Captain Fred was great! My boys enjoyed immensely as did I ! I highly recommend Fred but I also highly recommend using a different platform, this one charges too much, 15% from the captain and another $72 from the client. $200 is a a quarter of the cost of the trip charge . Airbnb and Vrbo don’t charge that much.

My daughter and I had a great time fishing with Butch. She had never caught a smallmouth before. Not only did she catch more than me she caught the biggest (4.40 lbs). Weather wasn't ideal with slick water and overcast most of the time but he still managed to put on some good fish. Our best 5 went a little over 16.5lbs. Was a good trip and I would recommend Butch as he has a lot of guide/tournament experience in the area. We went in the West Bay out of Traverse City.
