What is freshwater drum fishing in Austin all about?

Freshwater drum, also known as sheepshead, are a common and often overlooked species found in the waters around Austin, Texas. Despite their less glamorous reputation among anglers, freshwater drum offer a fun and challenging fishing experience. These fish are known for their deep bodies, silvery coloration, and distinctive throbbing sound produced by their swim bladders, which gives them their nickname "croakers." While not typically targeted specifically by anglers, freshwater drum can provide unexpected excitement while fishing for other species.

Freshwater drum can be found in various freshwater bodies throughout Austin, including lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. They are often found in areas with slow-moving or stagnant water, such as backwater areas, deep pools, or near submerged structures like fallen trees or rock piles. While freshwater drum are opportunistic feeders and will consume a wide variety of prey, including small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects, they can be particularly fond of bottom-dwelling organisms such as crayfish and mussels.

Anglers targeting freshwater drum in Austin can use a variety of techniques to entice strikes from these fish. Bottom fishing with natural baits such as worms, nightcrawlers, or cut bait is a popular and effective method for catching freshwater drum. Additionally, anglers can try using artificial lures such as jigs or soft plastics bounced along the bottom to mimic the movement of prey. While freshwater drum may not be the most glamorous species to target, their strong fighting abilities and willingness to take a variety of offerings make them a fun and rewarding catch for anglers exploring the diverse fishing opportunities in Austin.

What are the most popular months to fish for freshwater drum fishing in Austin?

Understanding the seasonal patterns of freshwater drum in Austin's waters is essential for anglers looking to maximize their chances of success. Freshwater drum can be caught year-round in Austin, but certain seasons offer more favorable conditions for productive fishing. During the warmer months of spring and summer, freshwater drum are typically more active and abundant as they feed voraciously and spawn in the shallower waters. This period, from late spring through early fall, often provides the best opportunities for anglers to target freshwater drum in Austin's lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.

In the spring, as temperatures rise and daylight hours increase, freshwater drum become more active in preparation for the spawning season. Anglers can find freshwater drum congregating in shallow areas, such as backwater bays, river flats, or near submerged structures, where they spawn in large numbers. This time of year presents excellent opportunities for anglers to catch freshwater drum as they actively feed and defend their spawning territories. As summer progresses, freshwater drum may move to deeper waters or seek cooler temperatures, but they remain readily available to anglers willing to adapt their tactics.

During the cooler months of fall and winter, freshwater drum activity in Austin's waters may decrease compared to the peak of summer. However, as water temperatures gradually decrease, freshwater drum become more active again, providing another window of opportunity for anglers to target them. The fall season, particularly in the early to mid-fall months, can offer excellent fishing for freshwater drum as they feed voraciously to prepare for the approaching winter months. Anglers in Austin can capitalize on these seasonal patterns to enjoy consistent and rewarding freshwater drum fishing throughout the year.

What techniques are popular for catching freshwater drum in Austin?

Fishing for freshwater drum in Austin requires a combination of patience, observation, and adaptability to the conditions. One effective technique for targeting freshwater drum is bottom fishing with natural baits. Anglers commonly use worms, nightcrawlers, or cut bait presented on the bottom to entice strikes from these fish. Freshwater drum are bottom feeders and often forage for food along the lake or riverbed, making bottom fishing an ideal method for targeting them. Using a sliding sinker or Carolina rig can help keep the bait near the bottom where freshwater drum are most likely to be found.

Another successful technique for catching freshwater drum in Austin is vertical jigging. Anglers can use jigs or soft plastics bounced along the bottom to mimic the movement of prey and entice strikes from freshwater drum. This technique is particularly effective when fishing in deeper water or areas with submerged structure, such as rock piles or submerged timber, where freshwater drum are known to congregate. By varying the speed and rhythm of the jigging motion, anglers can trigger strikes from curious or hungry fish.

Additionally, anglers can try casting with artificial lures to target freshwater drum in Austin's waters. Soft plastic grubs, swimbaits, or curly tail jigs can be effective when retrieved slowly along the bottom or near submerged structures. Anglers may also have success using crankbaits or lipless vibrating lures that create noise and vibrations to attract freshwater drum from a distance. By experimenting with different lure sizes, colors, and retrieval speeds, anglers can increase their chances of hooking into these strong and hard-fighting fish while enjoying the diverse fishing opportunities that Austin has to offer.

What other species are popular in Austin?

In addition to freshwater drum, anglers in Austin have a diverse array of fish species to target, offering opportunities for varied and exciting fishing experiences. One popular species among anglers is the largemouth bass, which inhabits the lakes, rivers, and reservoirs around Austin. Renowned for its aggressive strikes and challenging fights, the largemouth bass can be targeted year-round using a variety of techniques such as casting with artificial lures, flipping jigs into submerged cover, or topwater fishing along the shoreline.

Another sought-after species in Austin's waters is the catfish, known for its hearty appetite and widespread distribution. Catfish can be found in virtually all of Austin's water bodies, offering anglers ample opportunities to reel in these prized game fish. Whether targeting channel catfish, blue catfish, or flathead catfish, anglers often use a variety of baits such as stinkbaits, cut bait, or live bait to entice strikes from these bottom-dwelling predators.

Furthermore, Austin boasts an abundance of other species to pursue, including white bass, striped bass, crappie, and sunfish, among others. Kevin was an awesome guide! I took my 10 year son and we were able to catch almost 30 fish, mostly perch, sunfish but did catch some big black drum and catfish. We caught fish almost the whole time we were out which is what I was looking for since we are both inexperienced, my son had a great time and made good memories.

We had a great experience with Captain Kevin. He has a great rig, great personality and put us on enough Large Mouth to please me. I took my 10 year old son because he said he wanted to catch a large mouth. Kevin came through with an extra life jacket too (I forgot one for my son). One hiccup was we were going to meet at different lake but they closed it due to the horrible drought we are in. Kevin audibled and we meet at Lake Bastrop which was more convenient for me anyway. I would definitely recommend this easy to use app and would definitely hire Captain Kevin again. He had everything we needed and got us catching fish quickly. He is really good with kids too!

Kevin was awesome and so was his boat

George P. with Kevin M. of Austin, Texas

My experience was wonderful with Captain Kevin! He texted a couple days before the trip to ask if we could head out earlier than our scheduled time due to the heat and go try to beat the weekend rush of recreational boaters. So I met him at the boat ramp, which was very easy to find, at 6:15 and we headed out. The first place we fished was where we caught the biggest fish, pictured below, in the first 20 minutes of fishing. Things were a little slow the rest of the day, but we caught probably around a dozen fish, targeting and catching a variety of different species. . Captain Kevin was extremely friendly, and knows more about fishing than just about anybody I’ve met. He knew I’m a beginner, and was very kind and patient in teaching me and explaining everything to me. We swapped stories, got to know each other, and had the most wonderful time. I would highly recommend fishing with Captain Kevin.

Grant was a very pleasant and helpful guide for my daughter and me. Fishing was slow, on a very hot day. We both caught some nice bass, despite being on the river with several hundred July 4th weekend kayakers and paddleboaters, as well a bat watchers under the bridges. Grant is very knowledgeable and great fun to fish with. Highly recommend.

We had an amazing time out on Lake Travis with our guide Captain Aaron. Aaron reached out to us before our trip to check in and answer any questions we had. He provided great directions to the floating dock to meet him. We had a super fun morning out on the lake fishing for Bass. We got to try several different Rod & Reel combos, and various spots on Lake Travis. At the end of our trip he gave us a tour of Lake Travis! We will definitely book with Captain Aaron again.

My son and I recently went on a guided trip with Derek and we could not be happier! Originally we were scheduled for Lake Austin, but Derek had gotten some news that we should hit Lake Travis instead, and it definitely paid off! His knowledge of the lake and guidance with us novice fishermen (and just a good guy all around) led to some fun results!

Derek did a great job. Even though the weather was a little cold and the fish weren’t too hungry, we hit multiple different spots and everyone on the trip landed something! We also nearly landed a 25 pound mega catfish that would’ve been a personal best! All in all, awesome day, awesome guide.
