Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What are the most popular months to fish for mahi mahi in Isla Morada?

During the early part of the season, anglers often target Mahi Mahi in deeper offshore waters, where they congregate around floating debris, weed lines, and underwater structures. What techniques are popular for catching mahi mahi in Isla Morada?

Mahi Mahi fishing in Islamorada offers a thrilling adventure with a variety of techniques tailored to suit different preferences and skill levels. One popular method is trolling, where anglers cruise the waters offshore, trailing lines with artificial lures or natural bait behind the boat. This technique allows for covering a large area and enticing Mahi Mahi that are attracted to the movement and colors of the lures. Trolling near weed lines, floating debris, or patches of sargassum often yields success as these are natural gathering spots for Mahi Mahi.

Another effective technique for targeting Mahi Mahi in Islamorada is live bait fishing. Anglers use live baitfish such as pilchards, ballyhoo, or small mullet rigged on circle hooks to attract Mahi Mahi. This method can be particularly productive when fishing around structure or areas with known Mahi Mahi activity. Casting or slow trolling with live bait allows for a more natural presentation, enticing Mahi Mahi to strike with their voracious appetite.

For those seeking a more hands-on approach, sight fishing is a thrilling technique commonly used in Islamorada's crystal-clear waters. Anglers scan the surface for Mahi Mahi, often identified by their vibrant colors or distinctive dorsal fins slicing through the water. Once spotted, anglers cast lures or live bait directly towards the fish, leading to exhilarating strikes and adrenaline-pumping battles. Whether trolling, live bait fishing, or sight fishing, mastering these techniques ensures an exciting Mahi Mahi fishing experience in the legendary waters of Islamorada.

What other species are popular in Isla Morada?

In addition to the prized Mahi Mahi, Islamorada offers anglers a diverse array of other species to target, making it a haven for fishing enthusiasts year-round. One of the most sought-after species is the mighty tarpon, known for its acrobatic leaps and powerful runs. Islamorada's flats, channels, and backcountry waters provide ideal habitat for tarpon, especially during their seasonal migrations. Anglers can test their skills by targeting these silver giants using a variety of techniques such as live bait fishing, fly fishing, or sight casting.

Another popular species to catch in Islamorada is the elusive bonefish, revered for its speed, stealth, and challenging nature. These sleek, silver fish inhabit the shallow flats and sandy bottoms of the Florida Bay and Atlantic Ocean side of the Keys. Bonefish are notorious for their keen sense of smell and sight, making them a prized catch for anglers who enjoy the thrill of stalking and presenting a perfect cast to these elusive creatures.

For those seeking a more adrenaline-fueled adventure, Islamorada offers opportunities to target apex predators like sharks and barracuda. Whether fishing from shore, flats, or offshore waters, anglers can encounter a variety of shark species, including bull sharks, hammerheads, and blacktips. Barracuda, with their lightning-fast strikes and ferocious demeanor, also provide an exciting challenge for anglers using lures or live bait. On behalf of Warren Herndon, Wayne Hall and myself (Dexter Hudson), I would like to report that we had an outstanding time on our fishing excursion with Captain Don. Captain Don was very enjoyable to talk and visit with and he also patiently answered all of our questions, explaining what he was doing. And he worked like a Trojan baiting and putting new hooks and leaders on our poles after sharks robbed us of our catch when we reeled in too slowly. We did manage to reel in 22 good-sized Yellow Tail snapper and were able to return home as conquering heroes with meat for the table. Don not only cleaned the fish but provided several tasty recipes. The gentlemen did the cooking, the wives joined us in devouring the meal and we all had big smiles on our faces.. Thanks Captain Don! If or when we get back, you'll be the man we call!

I highly recommend Anthony if you want to fish out of Key Largo. He was obviously respected by the other guides we met while we were fishing and demonstrated a great knowledge of the local water and the best places to find different species of fish. Additionally, he had excellent equipment that was in very good shape. This includes his boat. Even more important was his willingness to conduct the type of trip I wanted for my grandchildren's first fishing trip. He is also extremely affable and fun to be with. If I go back to the Keys, I won't look for a different guide. I will just call Anthony and ask, "What's biting?".

We had an amazing time on a tough fishing day, would definitely book again when I am in the area. Andrew is great with the kids, and super patient with the beginners. He did everything he could to put us on fish. He also pointed out the abundance of wildlife, including sea turtles, hammerhead sharks, and a manatee. Everything we could hope for with my son's first saltwater fishing adventure.

We booked a 3/4 day after speaking with the captain the (plan) was made to shoot out deep and if we were not hitting them we would come in on the 3/4 day booking rather than a full day. Captain troy and his first mate worked as hard as I have ever seen to get fish on the boat. Not sure but at one time I think he had a deep running plug in one marlin plug and 4 top water trolling plugs so it looked like they were shooting for many different depths. We finally got into the mahi-mahi it was on. The first mate and captain maneuvered through 4 men as quick as humanly possible pulling fish off the lines and baiting hooks and handing them back. The only true way to explain it would be controlled chaos. These guys are GREAT at what they do and both the first mate and the captain seem to be fantastic people in there own right. So if your looking for a hard working boat stop here at Miller Time....
