trip description for Hot Pursuit in the Gulf Stream in Islamorada

Launching from Whale Harbor with Captain Larry puts you a mere 30 minutes ride offshore to the Gulf Stream's premier hot spots. Captain Larry and crew won’t waste a moment taking you to the action either. On these trips, you will head out up to 30 miles offshore and to target Dolphin, Blackfin Tuna, Amberjack, Wahoo, Shark, Marlin, Sailfish, King Mackerel, and more! If your interest peaked at dolphin/mahi-mahi, you should book your trip from May to October when the population explodes! The charter boat trolls rigged baits and lures to locate schools of dolphin that range from 5 to 50 pounds. Once a school is found, their voracious appetites and abundant numbers result in a feeding frenzy you’ll never forget. And, since Mahi is excellent table fare, you’ll want to keep them for dinner. Your boat’s mate will gladly fillet them and you can arrange to have your catch prepared at any of the local restaurants. From November to April, Captain Larry primarily targets sailfish, using live bait on light tackle. Catching the baitfish (ballyhoo) on the way out to the deep water is a super fun way to start off your adventure (Especially given the prospect that those fish will turn into even bigger fish!) The ballyhoo are chummed up to the surface, where they are caught by cast net or by fishing for them using tiny hair hooks. Once the bait well is full, the boat runs to the outside edge of the reef and the action begins. If you’ve never hooked into a 7-foot-long tail-walking sailfish on light tackle, you’re in for a thrill of a lifetime! We practice catch and release for all bill fishing and ask about no-kill fish mounts. All you need to bring for your trip with Captain Larry are your favorite snacks, drinks, and lunch if you'd like. Captain Larry will provide everything else from a captain & crew that cares, all the licenses, rods, tackle & bait, a clean & spacious vessel, and a filleting and bagging service for your catch! What techniques are popular for catching mahi mahi in Isla Morada?

Mahi Mahi fishing in Islamorada offers a thrilling adventure with a variety of techniques tailored to suit different preferences and skill levels. One popular method is trolling, where anglers cruise the waters offshore, trailing lines with artificial lures or natural bait behind the boat. Trolling near weed lines, floating debris, or patches of sargassum often yields success as these are natural gathering spots for Mahi Mahi.

Anglers use live baitfish such as pilchards, ballyhoo, or small mullet rigged on circle hooks to attract Mahi Mahi. This method can be particularly productive when fishing around structure or areas with known Mahi Mahi activity. Casting or slow trolling with live bait allows for a more natural presentation, enticing Mahi Mahi to strike with their voracious appetite.

For those seeking a more hands-on approach, sight fishing is a thrilling technique commonly used in Islamorada's crystal-clear waters. Anglers scan the surface for Mahi Mahi, often identified by their vibrant colors or distinctive dorsal fins slicing through the water. Once spotted, anglers cast lures or live bait directly towards the fish, leading to exhilarating strikes and adrenaline-pumping battles. Whether trolling, live bait fishing, or sight fishing, mastering these techniques ensures an exciting Mahi Mahi fishing experience in the legendary waters of Islamorada.

What other species are popular in Isla Morada?

In addition to the prized Mahi Mahi, Islamorada offers anglers a diverse array of other species to target, making it a haven for fishing enthusiasts year-round. One of the most sought-after species is the mighty tarpon, known for its acrobatic leaps and powerful runs. Anglers can test their skills by targeting these silver giants using a variety of techniques such as live bait fishing, fly fishing, or sight casting.

We recently had the pleasure of embarking on a fishing charter with Captain Brad and his shipmate Miles, and I must say, it was an experience to remember! From start to finish, the trip was filled with excitement, laughter, and, of course, some great catches. First and foremost, Captain Brad's professionalism and expertise were evident from the moment we set foot on his well-equipped boat. The vessel itself was top-notch, complete with all the necessary fishing gear and even a bathroom—a luxury rarely found on fishing charters. This attention to detail immediately put us at ease and set the stage for an enjoyable day out on the water. Now, let's talk about Miles—what a gem! Not only was he incredibly friendly and personable, but his sense of humor added an extra layer of fun to the trip. Whether he was cracking jokes or teaching me the rules of fishing, Miles's presence truly enhanced the overall experience. It's clear that he's not just a shipmate but also a valuable member of Captain Brad's team. As for the fishing itself, we couldn't have asked for a better outing. Captain Brad navigated us to all the right spots, where we were able to reel in some impressive catches. His knowledge of the local waters and fishing techniques was evident, and it made for a successful day of angling. In summary, my fishing charter experience with Captain Brad and Miles was nothing short of exceptional. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a novice looking to try your hand at fishing, I highly recommend booking a trip with Captain Brad. You won't be disappointed! Happy fishing! Todd & Paige
