Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

What is bonito fishing in Islamorada all about?

In Isla Morada, bonito, also known as false albacore, are a popular target species among anglers for their aggressive strikes and strong fighting abilities. These sleek and powerful fish are members of the tuna family and are characterized by their streamlined bodies, dark blue to greenish backs, and silver-white undersides. Bonito are commonly found in the offshore waters of the Florida Keys, where they inhabit reefs, wrecks, and current-rich areas. Anglers are drawn to bonito fishing for the excitement of hooking into these fast-swimming predators.

Bonito fishing in Isla Morada is typically productive year-round, with peak seasons often coinciding with periods of increased baitfish activity and favorable oceanic conditions. These fish are known for their voracious appetites and are often found feeding aggressively near the surface, making them accessible to anglers using a variety of techniques. While bonito can be caught using trolling, casting, and live bait fishing methods, they are particularly responsive to fast-moving lures and flies that mimic the movement of fleeing baitfish.

Anglers targeting bonito in Isla Morada often encounter these fish while pursuing other species such as tuna, mahi-mahi, and sailfish. However, dedicated bonito fishing trips can be highly rewarding, with anglers enjoying fast-paced action and the opportunity to reel in multiple fish during a single outing. Bonito provide anglers in Isla Morada with thrilling fishing experiences and the chance to test their skills against these powerful and resilient pelagic predators.

What are the most popular months to fish for bonito fishing in Islamorada?

In Isla Morada, bonito can be found in the waters year-round, but their presence may vary depending on seasonal changes and oceanic conditions. While bonito are known for their ability to tolerate a wide range of temperatures and can be encountered throughout the year, their abundance may fluctuate in response to factors such as water temperature, currents, and prey availability. Generally, anglers in Isla Morada can expect to find bonito more plentiful during certain times of the year when conditions are most favorable for their feeding and migratory patterns.

Spring and summer months often mark peak seasons for bonito fishing in Isla Morada, as warmer temperatures prompt increased activity among baitfish and other prey species. During these seasons, bonito may be more prevalent in nearshore and offshore waters, particularly around reefs, wrecks, and current edges where they feed aggressively near the surface. Anglers targeting bonito during the spring and summer months can expect fast-paced action and the opportunity to reel in multiple fish during a single outing.

While bonito can be caught year-round in Isla Morada, their abundance may diminish during the fall and winter months as water temperatures cool and seasonal weather patterns influence their movements. However, with the relatively mild climate of Isla Morada, anglers can still encounter bonito during these seasons, particularly in deeper offshore waters or areas with consistent water temperatures. By adjusting their fishing strategies to suit seasonal variations in fish behavior and habitat preferences, anglers can increase their chances of success when targeting bonito in Isla Morada throughout the year.

What techniques are popular for catching bonito in Islamorada?

In Isla Morada, anglers employ various effective techniques to target bonito, leveraging their swift movements and voracious feeding habits in the offshore waters of the Florida Keys. One prevalent method for catching bonito is trolling, where anglers use specialized trolling rigs equipped with artificial lures, rigged baits, or natural baitfish to mimic the movement of prey. Trolling allows anglers to cover large areas of water and locate schools of bonito, often targeting them around reefs, wrecks, and current edges where these fish congregate to feed.

Another productive technique for targeting bonito in Isla Morada is casting with small jigs or flies. Anglers may cast these lightweight lures into areas where bonito are actively feeding near the surface or chasing baitfish. By mimicking the movement of prey, anglers can entice bonito strikes and enjoy fast-paced action as these high-energy fish aggressively pursue their prey. Casting with small jigs or flies requires skill and precision, but it can be a rewarding method for anglers looking to engage in exciting surface fishing for bonito.

Additionally, live bait fishing can be an effective technique for targeting bonito in Isla Morada. Anglers may use live baitfish, such as pilchards or sardines, rigged on circle hooks or small jigs to attract bonito. By presenting live baitfish in areas where bonito are actively feeding or schooling, anglers can increase their chances of enticing strikes and hooking into these fast-moving pelagic fish. With their powerful runs and acrobatic leaps, bonito provide anglers in Isla Morada with thrilling fishing experiences and the opportunity to reel in prized catches throughout the year.

What other species are popular in Islamorada ?

In Isla Morada, anglers have a diverse array of species to target besides bonito, offering a rich tapestry of fishing opportunities in the vibrant waters of the Florida Keys. One popular species among anglers is the mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado. Mahi-mahi are prized for their vibrant colors, acrobatic jumps, and delicious flesh. They inhabit offshore waters and are often found near floating debris, weed lines, and current edges. Anglers target mahi-mahi using trolling, casting, or live bait techniques, enjoying thrilling battles and rewarding catches.

Another sought-after species in Isla Morada is the sailfish, recognized for its impressive size, distinctive sail-like dorsal fin, and incredible speed. Sailfish are commonly found in offshore waters, particularly along the edge of the Gulf Stream and near underwater structure such as reefs and wrecks. Anglers target sailfish using trolling techniques with rigged baits or artificial lures, as well as live bait fishing and kite fishing methods. Sailfish offer anglers in Isla Morada exhilarating fights and the chance to reel in trophy-sized fish.

Additionally, anglers in Isla Morada can pursue a variety of other species, including tuna, wahoo, kingfish, marlin, snapper, grouper, tarpon, permit, and bonefish, among others. Tuna are prized for their speed and strength, inhabiting offshore waters where they feed on baitfish and squid. Wahoo are known for their sharp teeth, fast strikes, and delicious flesh, making them a favorite among anglers targeting pelagic species. With such a diverse range of species to target, anglers in Isla Morada can enjoy thrilling fishing experiences and the opportunity to catch a wide variety of prized fish throughout the year.

We were able to score Mackerel, Yellowtail and we latched on 3 Mahi’s at the very very last second! Super lucky. Brad and his first mate made it happen! We were able to leave with 2 mackerels and 2 Mahi Mahi’s! Thank you! You won’t regret booking with them. Special experience.

Had an amazing time fishing with Robert. While Tarpon numbers were slightly lower across the board in the area, my brother and I got plenty of shots, and had fish turning on our flies all day. Captain Robert is the kind of guide that likes to move around, and work for the fish. Which is especially great since he has tons of next level secret spots for every tide and time of day! After sitting at our second spot of the day for a couple hours it got to be around 11am. We had been seeing fish in good numbers but sightings had started to slow he said: "Not sure if it's the right thing to do since we've been seeing fish... but I just feel like we've got to move. Lets go try another spot" It's that sort of mentality I love to see in my guide, humble enough to admit he can't read the minds of the fish, but he'll work his tail off to get a pattern on them rather than being stubborn and sticking with a spot that isn't producing! Thanks for an awesome day Robert!

This trip was definitely our highlight of the whole vacation. The captain was knowledgeable, experienced, friendly and highly accommodating. This made the trip so enjoyable. His first mate, Josh, was so efficient and explained everything he was doing so we could learn and stay safe. Both of them were so easy to have conversations with and really made for the best time at sea. We ended up reeling in 16 fish and throwing back 7 due to size. Fun-ish little story, one of the Mahi Mahi we reeled in came into the boat as half a fish because a shark bit at it as we were fighting it in. It was clear to see the bite marks. So we finished the day with 8 Mahi and 1 Wahoo, but even without the incredible luck we had on the sea, this trip would have been amazing. Josh filleted everything we caught and we gave away a bunch, and even the local restaurants will prepared it for you if needed. I highly recommend this excursion.

Captain Brad had a beautiful well maintained boat. We had a very windy day so difficult to fish the fish were not very active related to the weather but he tried as best he could moved frequently and kept in touch with other captains but no one was having luck that day. His first mate Ryan was very good kept all the fishing poles maintained and gave us helpful instructions. He kept moving the whole 8 hr trip. Hopefully next time fishing conditions will be better.
