Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is swordfish in Marathon all about?

Swordfish are a highly prized and elusive species found in the waters around Marathon, Florida. Known for their impressive size, strength, and the challenge they present to anglers, swordfish are a top target for offshore enthusiasts. These majestic fish inhabit deep waters, often ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 feet, making them a challenging but rewarding catch.

Anglers targeting swordfish in Marathon typically utilize specialized techniques such as deep dropping or daytime swordfishing. Deep dropping involves deploying baits or lures to the depths where swordfish dwell, using heavy tackle and electric reels to handle the extreme depths and strong currents. Daytime swordfishing, on the other hand, involves drifting or slow trolling with rigged baits or artificial lures in the upper layers of the water column, targeting swordfish as they hunt for prey near the surface.

Swordfish can be caught year-round in Marathon, but peak seasons often coincide with warmer months when these fish are more active and accessible in shallower depths. Anglers can enjoy the thrill of battling these powerful fish while soaking in the breathtaking views of the open ocean. Whether fishing from private boats or joining charter trips, targeting swordfish in Marathon promises an unforgettable angling experience for those willing to take on the challenge.

What are the most popular months to fish for swordfish in Marathon?

In Marathon, Florida, swordfish can be targeted year-round, but certain seasons offer more favorable conditions for anglers seeking to pursue these majestic fish. Typically, the best time to target swordfish in Marathon is during the warmer months, particularly from late spring through early fall. During this time, swordfish are more active and tend to migrate closer to the surface, making them more accessible to anglers.

Spring and summer are considered peak seasons for swordfish fishing in Marathon due to the warmer water temperatures and increased activity of these fish. Anglers have higher success rates during these months, as swordfish are more likely to feed aggressively and take bait presented at various depths. Additionally, the calmer seas and clearer waters during the summer months make it easier for anglers to spot and target swordfish.

While swordfish can be caught year-round in Marathon, anglers may find that their presence and activity levels fluctuate throughout the year. During the cooler months, swordfish may migrate to deeper waters, requiring anglers to deploy specialized deep dropping techniques to reach them. Regardless of the season, Marathon offers anglers ample opportunities to target swordfish and enjoy the thrill of battling these powerful and elusive fish in the rich and diverse waters of the Florida Keys.

What techniques are popular for catching swordfish in Marathon?

In Marathon, Florida, targeting swordfish requires specialized techniques due to the depths at which these majestic fish dwell. One common technique used by anglers is deep dropping, which involves deploying baits or lures to depths ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 feet where swordfish are known to roam. Anglers typically use heavy tackle and electric reels to handle the extreme depths and strong currents encountered during deep dropping. Baits such as squid, mackerel, or artificial lures are rigged and deployed using heavy weights to reach the desired depths where swordfish lurk.

Another effective technique for targeting swordfish in Marathon is daytime swordfishing. This method involves drifting or slow trolling with rigged baits or artificial lures in the upper layers of the water column, typically between 400 and 1,200 feet deep. Anglers often use kites or helium balloons to suspend their baits at the desired depth while keeping their lines out of the water to minimize drag and increase visibility. Swordfish are known to hunt for prey near the surface during the day, making them susceptible to bait presented at these depths.

Regardless of the technique used, patience and persistence are key when targeting swordfish in Marathon. Anglers may spend hours waiting for a bite, but the reward of hooking into one of these powerful fish is well worth the effort. Whether deep dropping in the abyssal depths or drifting with baits in the sunlit waters, anglers in Marathon have a variety of techniques at their disposal to target swordfish and enjoy the thrill of battling these majestic creatures in the open ocean.

What other species are popular in Marathon?

Aside from swordfish, Marathon, Florida, offers anglers a diverse array of other species to target, ensuring exciting fishing opportunities throughout the year. One popular species among anglers is the mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado. These colorful and acrobatic fish can be found offshore in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, where they congregate around floating debris, weed lines, or offshore structures. Anglers target mahi-mahi using trolling techniques with lures or rigged baits, presenting their offerings at varying depths to entice strikes from these highly prized game fish.

Another sought-after species in Marathon is the sailfish, known for its impressive speed, aerial displays, and challenging fights. Sailfish are commonly found in offshore waters, where they patrol the edges of currents and baitfish schools in search of prey. Anglers target sailfish using trolling techniques with artificial lures or rigged baits, presenting their offerings at various depths to entice strikes. Marathon is renowned as a premier destination for sailfish fishing, offering anglers the chance to hook into multiple catches in a single outing while enjoying the thrill of battling these majestic fish.

For those seeking inshore angling adventures, Marathon provides opportunities to target species such as tarpon, snook, and redfish. These prized inshore species inhabit the shallow flats, mangrove-lined channels, and backcountry waters of the Florida Keys, offering anglers endless opportunities for sight casting and light tackle action. Whether stalking shallow flats for tailing tarpon, probing the mangrove edges for lurking snook, or sight casting to cruising redfish, Marathon offers a diverse and rewarding fishing experience for anglers of all preferences and skill levels.

They nailed it with name! It was truly a Captain Experience and we had the pleasure of going out with Capt Hunter and his mate, Robert. The seas were rough, the sign was shining and the water was splashing. For most, they would have turned tail to head back to shore but the salt air was filled with the giggles of my family as Capt skirted over the waves, flawlessly. We bummed, we bounced, we laughed and we caught some beautiful fish. Capt Hunter was truly the perfect definition of an experienced Captain. He was safe, cautious, full of knowledge and fun! The whole 8 hour trip was worth every penny saved and every memory made. The Colonel (aka the Capt) will 💯 be our go to charter Capt for future trip. Robert, was fun and charming and a very valuable part of the crew. We truly had the best time and would highly recommend them to anyone. The Captain Experiences team goes above and beyond to make sure it’s smooth sailing from the moment you book a charter with them. The communication is second to none with them. Available at all times of the day. Thank you, Gentlemen for a exhilarating experience. You haven’t seen the last of us.

Had a fantastic trip with Captain John in July of 2023. Went for a morning trip on our honeymoon, caught tons of fish, had a lot of fun. John and his first mate were very competent, personable, and provided an excellent experience. The boat was well outfitted, John knew several spots with lots of fish, and gave us more time than we'd paid for. Great experience, will absolutely book again next time we're in the keys.

Captain John was awesome! He was super upfront about water conditions and left all the decisions to us. Had a quick backup plan for us since there were 7-9 foot seas offshore. Caught some fish waiting out the weather and then put us on the fish we were after! 10/10 would recommend
