One of the highlights of flats fishing in Tavernier is the opportunity to target the "Big Three" - bonefish, permit, and tarpon - known as the ultimate challenge for flats anglers. These prized species are revered for their speed, strength, and elusive nature, offering anglers a true test of skill and patience. Whether stalking bonefish on the flats, presenting a fly to permit over turtle grass beds, or casting to rolling tarpon along the flats edges, Tavernier offers unparalleled opportunities for anglers to target these coveted gamefish.

Beyond the "Big Three," Tavernier's flats are also home to a variety of other species, including snook, redfish, and barracuda. Whether you prefer sight fishing with light tackle or fly fishing in shallow waters, Tavernier provides endless opportunities for anglers of all skill levels to experience the thrill of hooking into hard-fighting gamefish amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Florida Keys. With its pristine flats, diverse fishery, and year-round fishing opportunities, Tavernier remains a premier destination for flats fishing enthusiasts seeking unforgettable adventures on the water.

What are the most popular months to go flats fishing in Tavernier?

Flats fishing in Tavernier, Florida, follows a seasonal rhythm that offers anglers diverse opportunities throughout the year. Spring kicks off the flats fishing season in Tavernier, marked by warming waters and the arrival of migratory species like tarpon, permit, and bonefish. Anglers flock to the shallow flats to target these prized gamefish as they feed voraciously in preparation for spawning, providing thrilling opportunities for sight fishing enthusiasts.

As summer unfolds in Tavernier, flats fishing reaches its peak season, with the warm waters attracting a multitude of species to the shallows. This time of year offers prime conditions for targeting tarpon, bonefish, and permit, as well as other species like snook, redfish, and barracuda. With longer days and increased fishing activity, anglers can enjoy action-packed days on the water, whether casting lures, flies, or live bait to cruising fish or sight fishing in clear, shallow waters.

In the fall, as temperatures begin to cool and baitfish start their migration, flats fishing in Tavernier enters a transitional period. While the peak season for migratory species like tarpon may wane, fall brings increased activity from resident species like bonefish, permit, and snook. Anglers can still enjoy productive fishing opportunities in Tavernier's flats, with the added bonus of fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures. Whether you're targeting migratory or resident species, Tavernier offers year-round flats fishing adventures for anglers seeking unforgettable experiences on the water.

What techniques are popular for flats fishing in Tavernier?

Flats fishing in Tavernier, Florida, offers anglers a diverse range of techniques tailored to the unique challenges of targeting shallow-water species. This technique requires keen observation skills and a stealthy approach to avoid spooking the fish, making it a thrilling and rewarding pursuit in Tavernier's clear waters.

Fly fishing is another favored technique for flats fishing in Tavernier, adding an extra layer of challenge and excitement to the angling experience. Drift fishing is a versatile technique widely used by anglers in Tavernier's flats to cover a large area of water and target a variety of species. Anglers drift with the current while casting lures or live bait, allowing them to explore different sections of the flats and adapt to changing conditions. This method is effective for targeting species like snook, redfish, and barracuda, as well as migratory species like tarpon and permit that may venture into shallower waters. Whether sight fishing, fly fishing, or drift fishing, Tavernier's flats offer something for anglers of all skill levels and preferences, making it a premier destination for flats fishing enthusiasts.

From the moment we stepped on the boat, it felt like we’d known Capt. Mike forever. He delivered exactly what he promised — a true backwater experience. First cast of the day? A Goliath Grouper. Moments later, a solid Snook. We had multiple hookups after that, though a few were lost in the structure (totally on us). When the tide shifted, Capt. Mike made quick adjustments and put us right back on the fish. He even gave us the choice to chase trout and reds, but we wanted Snook and Grouper — and he delivered! Per my wife’s request, he took us to see crocodiles and manatees, which absolutely made her day. On the way back, we spent time with a playful pod of bottlenose dolphins — an unforgettable bonus. If you love the idea of feeding tarpon at Robbie’s, just book a trip with Capt. Mike — you can have that same thrilling experience right at the end of your day on the water. A fantastic half-day, lifetime memories with my wife, and the pleasure of fishing with a genuinely great guy. We will absolutely book with Capt. Mike again. Highly recommended!
